Asked whether Mayo will ever play on the outside, Belichick said (per Tom Curran of CSNNE.com), “Yeah, I mean, I don’t really see that. Maybe the next coach can put him there, I don’t know. But I think he’s going to play off the line of scrimmage and he’s going to play in the tackle box somewhere.”

Though Belichick surely was kidding when he referred to the whole “next coach” thing, there’s persistent speculation in some circles that Belichick would ride off into the sunset if he could win one more Super Bowl.

Admittedly this is probably an overreaction on my part, but I read this and I got upset at the thought of BB not coaching this team. So I ask you patsfans, if BB wins another ring do you see him stepping away?

Personally I hope not, he's accomplished so much with this team and I'd hate to see that era end. (Obviously I feel the same about TFB but I'm comforted in knowing he's got at least 4 more years here)

On one hand, he's entering his 12th season here and that's a lot, but at the same time he's still sharp as ever, and you see moves like drafting Mallett and you wonder if he's setting the groundwork for a post Brady era.

Whenever BB does decide to retire, I will always remember his time here with two words:

Excellence and Dominance!

I think BB will be another Marv Levy, ie coach into his seventies if his heath allows. He is a coach.

BB looks as relaxed and happy as I've ever seen him. What else would he enjoy more?

Nope...............................

BB will coach for a long time. He won't be a papa Joe in sense of age, but I see 8 years easy perhaps 9. Wishing over :( He will retire 2-3 years after Brady

he loves his team he ain't leaving. He LIVES for coaching Football :)

I could deff see him leaving after another and i wouldn't blame him..all i want is 1 more with the BB and Brady era..3 is nice..but it's been a while..1 more will seal it

Not that I hope he would leave but I would be more than happy to get an answer to that question sometime next February. ;)

Who would succeed BB? I always wondered if he'd recommend Urban Meyer.

12 years in and this thread remains as predictable an annual event as there is... Second only to the equally predictable he must want to prove it wasn't a fluke here and he can win anywhere for a boatload of money thread that appears whenever his contract status is speculated...

If Bill rides off into the sunset it will be Jimmy Johnsons fault. Him and that darn Enzyte and I know what he'll be riding.

This is football...not the set of Bonanza, Hoss...

his life is pretty much 100% football, i don't think he cares about anything but football. his father was involved until his death in his 80s, belichick might coach or at least be involved in the organization into his 80s for all we know. what would he do in retirement, besides itch to coach football again?

I personally think Belichick outlasts Brady in New England.

Why do people think this? Does Belichick seem like a guy who wants to do anything other than coach football?

Just as absurd as when people always assumed Brady would "retire at 35 and go into politics".

I'm not seeing it. Unless we're missing something (entirely possible), I haven't seen any indication that he's itching to do anything else.

The "next coach" bit falls perfectly in line with his dry wit.

As crazy as this will sound to everyone, I would honestly take 10-12 more yrs of Belichick at a guaranteed competitive level, than one more SB win and seeing him leave.

It equates to 10-12 more yrs of thrilling Sundays, hope for the future, remaining competitive, and watching incredibly well played football vs a "one-and-done BB year."

I realize that it probably won't be too popular of a statement, but I am totally serious.

The SB win would be just as incredible as the others, but after a few months when April/May rolled around, we'd all be wanting Belichick back, and the high of the SB would likely subside.

FWIW---He's only halfway through his 6 yr deal, so we should have at least 2011, 2012, and 2013 before this is even a problem. I think Kraft will make it happen, and we'll hear about an extension after next season (post 2012 season).

I could see him moving to Director of Football Operations after a few more coaching years, but I don't think he will ever leave this organization. Belichick's profession/hobby/passion is football.

What are you smoking? I'll take a SB over a bunch of years of underachieving and false hope.

I agree, there has always been controversy about who made whom, and BB will stay on for a couple of years after Brady and continue to build this team for the future.

After he gets off the field Mr. Kraft will put him in charge of Football Operations.. and he will continue to leave his imprint.
