I've thought about that at times too. Don't get me wrong, he built some great teams here in New England. But yeah, it seems we've hit on a much higher percentage of draft picks since he moved on to KC.

Conversely KC had a horrible draft his first year there in 2009 and almost all their draft piks from that year are not on the team anymore. 2010 was a little better and 2011 will have to prove themselves this year.

We don't seem to be drafting the 'soft' players like before.

But hey ... Scott had a hand in the glory years so who is complaining.

Pioli was here for the Maroney/Chad Jackson draft year.

Then there's the Ron Brace/Darius Butler year.

Terrence Wheatley/Jonathon Wilhite/Shawn Crable year.


Those were all pretty bad years, but how do we know who was behind those picks?

All we know is that last year without Pioli, we did a fantastic job and added a lot of new starters (McCourty, Hernendez, Gronk, Spikes, Cunningham, etc)

Personally...i blame McDaniels

I like to think he was given the same confidence scarnecchia gets but only he completely blows as an evaluator of talent. What he did with the Broncos is proof enough.

Pioli had a tremendous 2010 draft and was executive of the year.

Absolutely. Of course, 2010 might have been the deepest, richest draft class ever, and the Patriots arguably came away with an even better draft class picking 17 picks later.

I think it's safe to say who has had the better draft so far. If Pioli's was tremendous than the Patriots draft was phenomenal. The wrong Gm got the award that year if you base it only on the draft. I'm not sure how KC did in free agency in 10.

It could have faulty reports from the NE scouting department.

NE having their own scouting department is what differentiated the Patriots from some of the other clubs during the Reign because they used a National scouting service for intelligence. If the intel is corrupt, then the whole system suffers. Like any top company, its a team effort with people who do a great job across the board.

Dimtroff left after 07, but I recall more recent changes in the SD within the last few years, IIRC.

Is it possible that the pairing had gotten a bit stale? Sure, but it's clear that Pioli is very capable when it comes to selecting players and does a hell of a good job as a GM. That's really all I was getting at. I don't see it as a contest between BB and Pioli, since they are running teams that have recently been at very different points on the success scale, and they've needed different strategies as a result.

Pioli's name was extremely overrated. He did do well overall, but as we can see that losing him to KC behooved the Patriot's. Pioli name stuck b/c he was here for the surfacing of a dynasty in NE. He was a good GM, but the guy we have know is very good as well and had a good success @ Tennessee.

He had a good draft for KC, but I think we both needed a change.


KC did get to pick "sooner" w/ many of their picks



the year of The (Gronk Hernandez) how did we not win that? Quality all over.

I think it really only happens when warranted. But it does happen.

I liked Pioli but like Charlie, Romeo, Mangina and McDaniels I wonder if they were more beneficaries of success rather than architects. All were great at their jobs while part of the Kraft/Belichick machine. Then, left to their own talents, they crashed and burned.

Dimitroff is the only guy who seems to be really thriving but it seem the Falcons organization is a well oiled machine as a whole.

One of the biggest questions this board continued to face was understanding the "blackhole" we fell into, regarding catastrophic draft picks and questionable free agent signings.

Bringing Pioli into question and contrasting the teams recent performance against that timeline is prett valid.

We all like Matt Cassel, but the first thing I questioned is whether he ws overpaid.

He had a nice first draft but as was mentioned had the benefit of some high picks and a team who's only direction was up.

This is simply not not a fair assessment, IMO. Weis was fine as an O.C. last year. Romeo has been fine as a D.C. in K.C.. Romeo had good years and bad as a head coach in Cleveland, which isn't much different from most Cleveland coaches. Mangini was doing pretty well in NY until Favre got injured, and he then got thrown under the bus. McDaniels hasn't had a chance to O.C. elsewhere, but he was scapegoated in Denver, where the problem was/is the ownership.
