Here's my view, based on training camp and the first pre season game performance, of what the final 2011 Patriots Roster will look like. A lot will still change in the time leading up to the final cuts, with the possibility of trades, PUP list, IR, and player performance, etc.

QB (3)
Brady, Hoyer, Mallet

HB (4)
Green-Ellis, Woodhead, Ridley, Vereen

WR (6)
Ochocinco, Welker, Branch, Price, Edelman, Slater(ST)

TE (3)
Gronkowski, Hernandez, Smith

OL (9)
Light, Mankins, Koppen, Connolly, Vollmer, Solder, Wendell, LeVoir, Ohrnberger

DE (4)
Cunningham, Carter, Moore, Anderson

Big DE/Rush DT (2)
Ellis, Wright

DT (5)
Wilfork, Haynesworth, Love, Brace, Cohen

LB (5)
Mayo, Spikes, Guyton, Fletcher, Ninkovich

CB (5)
McCourty, Bodden, Arrington, Dowling (PUP?), Butler

S (4)
Chung, Meriweather, Sanders, Brown

Specialists (3)
Gostkowski, Mesko, Katula

PUP
Faulk, Cannon

PUP / IR are tough to predict with the secrecy of the injuries and all. It also wouldn't suprise me to see at least one of the veteran DL signings cut. Below is a list of players with a decent chance of making it onto the final roster, whether it be because of the previous reasons, or special teams need, injuries, future performance, etc. (listed from highest chance of making the team (in my opinion)).

BUBBLE (15)
Tate, Pryor (PUP?), Wilhite, Warren, Richard, Deaderick, Morris, Maneri, M. Carter, Lockett, Murrell, Weston, M. Williams, Yeatman, T. White, M. Richard

Thoughts? Regardless of who makes it or not, it's going to be one hell of a talented team this year, and it's going to be tough for a lot of guys to clear waivers.

I don't think that we will increase the front seven by 2 positions, just because we are running more 4-3.

1) Tracy White is getting a LB/ST position.

2) Cohen has ZERO chance of making the team.

3) I would keep Warren and Pryor over Love and Anderson. If someone else has a chance , it is Richard.

4) I would put both Brace and Deaderick on the PUP list.

Nice job. I think Edelman is on the bubble. The last 2 DL spots (you have Love and Cohen) could go many ways. White will be a very difficult cut, but hard to find who to take away.

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

The reported presence of scouts from sixteen other teams at the first pre-season game surprised me. It suggests that other teams already realize how talented the Patriots rooster cuts will be. Cut down time this year is going to have many hard decisions.

Are you predicting Brace won't be able to practice all camp, or are you preferring to force him to PUP? I see him as one of the 3 or 4 best interior DL on the team, depending on what Ellis has left.

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

If Butler is making this team then I'm heading down to Foxboro for a tryout. I'm almost sure I can let the receiver I'm covering catch the ball every time.

And I'll take up less cap space.

I listed Wright and Ellis in that category because depending on the situation they could play either position.

I don't think you give Cohen enough credit, he was on the team last year and looks promising as of late. But you're all right, the last few DL spots could really go a number of ways, and ST should have another spot.

Going to be some tough decisions, but it's definitely better than struggling to find enough guys to contribue (looks at Bills ;) )

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

I think this is one of the better projections out there. I too like Cohen but I have no idea if he'll make the team.

I really think Tate is going to be the hardest cut of anyone. I think his true battle is against edelman and imho they stand on equal footing. Edelman will get virtually no playing time between his bad hands and health of welker and hernandez. At this present time, edelman's value is on special teams as a punt returner. Edelman is quick but he isn't fast enough for kick returns. Tate is our best KR and at UNC he was an awesome punt returner. With Tate's athleticism i am starting to wonder if he could even take over Slater's role on the team.

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

Price is gone if you dont keep him on your roster. hes not PUP eligible. he either needs to go on IR, go on the roster or be cut and start for the jets.

He was on the roster last year. I see no reason he won't be this year.
Cutting Price to keep Edelman would be criminal.

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

I'm predicting that Brace will not be able to practice for the next 3 weeks, and that Belichick will choose the PUP list for him.

MG LOCKS IF THEY HAVE ANYTHING LEFT IN THE TANK (13)
Wilfork
Ellis, Haynsworth, Carter, Warren, Wright
Cunningham, Ninkovich, Mayo, Spikes, Guyton, Fletcher
White
=====================================
PRYOR, MOORE, BRACE, ANDERSON, LOVE, DEADERICK, MURRELL, RICHARD, COHEN
WESTON, M. CARTER, S WILLIAMS plus the UDFA's
How much room is there on the roster for any of these players? How many reps are left? Who provides the best backups? Are any essential? What is your guess of how to prioritize these players. How necessary are any of them?

MAKE YOUR CASE!

Right now. I would choose PRYOR and MOORE for the roster and put Brace and Deaderick on the PUP list. I could easily be convinced to keep BRACE on the 53 also if he is practicing. In the end, I expect that at least one of my 16 players (I include Brace) will be injured or will be waived for non-performance, so I guess listing 16 at this point is OK.

He is certainly in a battle, not only with other corners but with the 'extra guy' at many positions. Dowlings health may mean a lot to Butler.

Its almost certain based on past seasons that one or more veteran FAs will be (suprisingly?) cut. This group screams out for that.

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

bottom line, Tate needs to prove he can play or hes done, regardless of whether he can i cant see them cutting price.

I'm guessing that we carry one more LB, as you said--in White. He will obviously be a ST-only player. Overall, I agree that his roster assessment and prediction were good.

I don't think that we will increase the front seven by 2 positions, just because we are running more 4-3.

Maybe you are considering Moore/Cunningham as hybrids, and not counting them. That's the only way I see you getting 2 extra guys, and would make a lot more sense, as that would take his total DL guys to 9, instead of the 11 that he has. Your post on "16 front seven guys" makes the same point. It's much easier to lump them together, so I see your point.

Price and Edelman are no exceptions. Price having a 100 yards in the first game against "who?" means jack.

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

Price and Edelman are no exceptions. Price having a 100 yards in the first game against "who?" means jack.

I think they all make it personally. I think one will eventually get injured, and the supposed 'problem' will sort itself out in time.

Price isn't on any kind of 'bubble,' as he has done exactly what he has been told, and has shut his mouth and been patient. He was drafted for a reason, and to even think about cutting him would make drafting him entirely pointless to begin with. On top of that, he has had a great TC, and has been impressive in the little action that we've seen this yr + last vs MIA.

Edelman surely isn't going anywhere either. He played in 8 total snaps last night. Woodhead was in there longer. If there was even any chance of Edelman getting cut, BB would have been taking a long, hard look at him like many of the other 'bubble' players. The fact that he was quickly pulled tells me that he's a downright lock to make the team. Especially until the Wes Welker contract situation solves itself (not that I'm saying he's on WWW's level, b/c I hate when people do that). I am saying that he will be here, and that he has proven his talent and worth on ST and as a backup slot guy. Edelman did not get much playing time last yr due to the changing of the offensive philosophy--the re-emergence of the TE's, the cutting of Moss, and Welker coming back at full speed. There simply weren't enough balls to go around in my opinion. If we're going to fault Edelman for dropping a few passes last yr, then we may as well do the same thing with all of the other WR's, including Welker. I imagine #85 Ocho will drop a few passes every now and then too, and he's likely going to be a big part of our offense this yr. Edelman worked hard (apparently) in the off-season with some personal time with Brady, and has had some good practice time in TC.

Tate won't likely go anywhere either, as he is also one that is too early to 'give up' on. If he were to be cut or traded, it would be because there is something behind the scenes that we aren't privy to, such as his inability to properly read and react to the defense in his tree routes, or he simply has not worked hard enough to impress the coaches or win TB's trust over. Regardless, I think they all stay, as each and every one is a different type of player in regards to being a part of the shorter-term or longer-term approach here.

Shorter term WR's in terms of the "2011" plan---Branch, possibly Ochocinco depending upon his attitude and year here

Longer term/future WR's (at least through next TC)---Price, Edelman, Tate

Staple/long term (hopefully)---Wes Welker

ST's--Slater

I think they all stay, until there's an injury, and then it takes care of itself--If not, we carry 6 WR's and 1 ST-only player in Slater, which is not that unreasonable. Belichick's philosophy on every single position of this team is good depth, and WR is not going to be any different.

Re: Final Roster + Cuts

Good job on how you defined the defensive positions.

I'm in perfect agreement with you on offense (and of course kicking specialists), except that I have no opinion on Levoir/Manieri and other reserve OL battles. My comments on defense include:

DE (4)
Cunningham, Carter, Moore, Anderson That's a lot of guys, but it's not crazy.

Big DE/Rush DT (2)
Ellis, Wright

DT (5)
Wilfork, Haynesworth, Love, Brace, Cohen. Cohen??? And Brace can stay on PUP.

LB (5)
Mayo, Spikes, Guyton, Fletcher, Ninkovich. Plus Tracy White or an alternative, probably exactly White.

CB (5)
McCourty, Bodden, Arrington, Dowling (PUP?), Butler. I'm guessing Dowling will practice.

S (4)
Chung, Meriweather, Sanders, Brown. Brown's job is at risk.

PUP
Faulk, Cannon. Why not Brace and Deaderick as well?

BUBBLE
Pryor (PUP? Is he on it now?), Warren (tough cut), Richard (PS again), M. Carter (PS),

Fencer--I agree with your PUP values, and Tracy White. I do not however, even come close to agreeing on your assessment of Sergio Brown though (FWIW). Brown played well last yr as a rookie, and is just the kind of guy that BB will look at to give more reps to. He comes on the cheap, is easily coached up, and they will give him a shot--this is the one thing that I am sure of ;)

#38 Special baby--Sergio Brown :rocker:
