Saw an interesting package featuring both BJGE and Woodhead.. some ISO, one back. Faulk is in there.

Thank you for the in-depth report, it is much appreciated.

However, I am confused..are you implying that you saw Faulk taking reps? Or did you make a mistake and mean someone else?

Later on, you say that Faulk will go to PUP...also someone else has posted a thread about an ESPN report stating that Faulk will go to PUP to start the season.

"Rookie RB Shane Vereen has practiced since going down with a hamstring injury a week ago.
Vereen is losing valuable reps in a competitive backfield. Multiple beat writers noted that the second-rounder was one of the fastest players on the field early in camp. Vereen should have a role this season, but he's not a great bet for more than 10 touches per game."

I also just read that Faulk will start the year on the PUP. I expect Vareen and Ridley to both be big parts of the offense this season.

"Rookie RB Stevan Ridley has "taken advantage of extended reps" in training camp, according to ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss.
Though Ridley is a power back at 5'11/225, he's shown more agility than expected. He's a candidate for short-yardage and clock-killing work, and he has a talent edge on incumbent BenJarvus Green-Ellis. We're steering clear of the Pats backfield in redraft leagues. "

"According to ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss, the Patriots plan to stash Kevin Faulk (ACL surgery) on the reserve/PUP list to start the season.
It's the only sensible move. Faulk has yet to participate in camp, and the Pats have a crowded house backfield. Staying on the roster via the PUP list is a smart way to keep Faulk in the locker room for his much valued leadership."

Sorry- I should have said that he is there but wasn't in uniform. As he has not practiced once, he is on active/PUP

I disagree with this part. If a rookie is only lightly injured, and could come back before the middle of the season, you are ******ing his growth and progress by putting him on IR unnecessarily. Red shirting does NOT work in the NFL.

Why put the future of a young player at risk just to get another single year out of Kevin Faulk or Sammy Morris?

A hammy is not a light injury.

But then again, I have to reiterate that I am an amateur observer and I know nothing about what goes on the inside. I could be wrong on everything, for all I know.

Gotcha. Thnx for the great analysis Psycho, great stuff!

Thanks for the info!

So basically the 24 nickel is having a 4 man front of 2 huge DT's and Moore and Cunningham as DE's on the outside and then 2 LBS and 5 DB's?

Yes.. but not necessarily Moore and Cunningham- could be any of the other DE/OLB's.

Regarding the "four man front," I think that's what is making this confusing as far as all the talk about 4-3/3-4, because the OLB's we have are near the size of what you want in a 4-3 DE (smaller, faster than a 3-4 DE). So the line is blurry there, especially when they are all in three point.

Woodhead looked great out there also. Just amazing how quick and elusive he is in the hole.

Like a jackrabbit trying not to get trampled in a stampede.

Solder has a nasty streak? It seems he's taken my advice to start chewing glass. I'm very happy.

Where does Ellis fit? His salary tells me he's going to get significant snaps, which would mean not the same position as Wilfork and Haynesworth. Yet, he's much closer to the size of a Mike Wright than an Eric Moore.

Also, I have no idea what guys mean by 2-4 nickel. From a wild guess, is it 2 DTs, with 4 LB/DEs, 2 of which have their hand on the ground?

It's a 2-4-5 set that the Steelers and Packers use a lot in nickel downs. Basically 2 DT's, 2 34OLB (sometimes in a 2 pt stance, sometimes in a 3 pt stance), 2 ILBs and 5 secondary personal.

Good read on the observations...

Do you think Vereen might hit the PUP first to give him a chance, or was that implied by IR?

Vereen practiced. He is not eligible for PUP unless they changed the rules..

Like a jackrabbit trying not to get trampled in a stampede.

So if I'm hearing right on the RB corps:

- Woodhead was no fluke last year, he returns looking stronger and sturdier with the same exceptional quickness.

- BJGE is turning heads after some creative offseason workouts designed to give him more quickness to go with his power.

- Ridley, the most maligned draft "reach" of the year, looks like the complete package as a power back with soft hands.

- Vereen is injured, but in his brief time in practice looked like the zippiest guy on the field.

- Medlin, a lightly regarded UDFA, looks like he belongs.

- And then there's Morris and Faulk.

I'm feeling good, how about you?

Thanks for the in depth report.

I don't think Morris will be kept because they would have to guarantee his salary for the year if he is on the opening day roster! It's more likely they will keep Vereen and he will be one of the gameday inactives until he is ready to play.

I saw Vereen's run when he pulled up with the hamstring tweak. I don't think it's serious, but it is enough to keep him out of practice. I am sure he is getting treatment and riding a bike to get it back in shape.

I feel really good about the backs. I'll be the first to admit that I was shaking my head at the Morris signing (especially since Ron brown was had for a bag of peanuts).

But as mentioned above, Morris looks like he is in great shape. How that translates onto the playing field, we'll have to wait and see.

Hopefully we dont have to see much of him either way. ;)

Yup.

Unless their injuries are much, much worse than anyone thinks, Vereen and Dowling are both locks for the 53 man roster. It's a long season and even if injuries and the lockout slow their development, they're talented enough that they should be able to help you a lot more in November/December than some street free agent.

Thanks for the TC summary. It's good to get multiple viewpoints, since I imagine it's hard to take in everything that's happening during a TC session.

Vereen's injury is unfortunate, but as a previous poster states, he's not eligible for PUP. He'll have to heal, and given that he was their first RB choice in this year's draft, my guess is the team will give him ample time to recover. BB seems to be approaching this season by acknowledging that players will get injured, and he needs the cavalry to come in after week 6. Faulk and others currently on PUP are candidates for the cavalry or second wave. This is smart considering the beating they'll take over the first 6 weeks of their schedule. Hopefully, Vereen can become productive, and they'll see fit to phase him in when he can go full speed. It's tough to place a first-year player with such promise on the IR. I imagine that would be a last resort in his case and would be due to a very severe injury.

:yeahthat:

Not only are they talented enough to help down the stretch, but they're WAY too talented to throw away a critical year of practice and development by IRing them unless absolutely necessary.

The other thing that really flew under the radar yesterday, is the continued development of Ryan Mallet. He was firing on all cylinders, hitting all his receivers, and has again demonstrated to me the Brady-like ability to intuitively grasp the offense. He doesn’t have the fine-tuned master’s command that Brady does, but he grasps the meaning, the philosophy of the offense. He has even got to the point where he is correcting other players on their alignments- he scolded Ridley on a weakside HB alignment (apparently supposed to be strongside to dual-read, if I got that right). He also corrected Yeatman’s Y slot (backed him off LOS), and later on in the RZ drill found Yeatman on a drag and did the proverbial through the eye of the needle to beat the man coverage, after which he went up to Yeatman, whooping, banged helmet and chest bumped, and slapped him everything short of physical abuse.

The more I see of Mallet, the more I see that he really is going to be Brady’s successor. I have to admit this is bittersweet to me. On the one hand, we have an extremely gifted QB shooting up the ranks and by all early indications will not miss a beat once he steps in- but when he does it will have meant that a glorious chapter has come to a close.

I have been keeping my eyes on Price- he is my binky from last year, and he has not disappointed except on PR where he dropped yet another punt; I don’t think he will be utilized as a PR except in emergency. Otherwise he pretty much has jumped Tate on the depth chart and has earned Brady’s trust. That is one thing that is pretty obvious- if Brady doesn’t trust a receiver, it really shows on the field, even to the average fan. I saw Price taking off on go routes a few times, (flag, post)- so clearly being seen as a vertical threat. One thing that stood out to me is how well Price has the timing of the trips down- especially the cross (rub). He acquires well.

Camp fodder Jenkins made two beautiful catches, as he always seems to do every year he has been there, one a flying diving catch on a goal-line trips right.

My opinion of Scott O’Brien, ST coach is really going lower and lower every year- this guy is a screamer. He shouts. He doesn’t get his point across man-to-man, or confer individually or privately, he yells at you from 10 yards away. Consequently I have seen nothing to impress me on ST- the punt coverage unit isn’t really 100% there. This may be judgmental but I am willing to wager that this is a result of the manner in which he corrects those players, in the worst possible way.
