We're Fine At DL/OLB

Its great to see BB addressing our DL/P Rushers and these acquisitions are all pieces to Pat's puzzle. BB should pull'da trigger one more time and go get Osi. He'd be a bonified pass rusher/stopper with Wilfolk/Haynesworth and these new D Men would flourish in schemes IMO. My theory is based on Osi "Legitimately" injured and needing surgery.
Can we work cap and would you include Brace in trade?

Remember, we also get 54 players this year

Really?? 54 players on the roster, huh? ;)

My guess is you're either thinking of the 46th man active on gameday, or the expansion to 90 in training camp.

Roster size is still 53 guys...

For what it's worth, I think you had a ton of good points about the depth/injuries on the D-line, and I agree with it all.

My gosh man, how many more guys do we need? ;)

Don't think Osi is leaving the NYG, at least not this yr.

Remember, we also get 54 players this year, and injuries on the defensive line can be especially hard to overcome. I think we need more depth here than any other position on the roster, due to its importance and higher rate of injury.

I think the only change to 53 man roster is you now only have to keep 2 QB's on the roster and teams can now exchange another position for the 3rd QB slot if they wish.

The active roster was changed so you can dress 46 instead of 45.

Fun fact:

The last five major additions to DE position, in chronological order:

Eric Moore - 6-4.2
Markell Carter - 6-4.3
Shaun Ellis - 6-4.3
Mark Anderson - 6-4.3
Andre Carter - 6-4.3

Apparently the Patriots know what they are looking for.
(stats from NFL Draft Scout)

Thats insane. I feel like I'm at a pet store picking out a puppy.

Agreed! I think we're good but Osi puts us over, final piece.
I'm not fully convinced that giants will keep Osi this season. This has been goin on last 3 or so yrs. I see them cuttin ties.

I have some good feelings about Ellis and A. Carter but also worried that they will take roster spots so that our youngsters will be cut. Although it would be foolish to think you can draft and develop all your guys I still get a bit worried about all these older guys coming in.

Which youngster(s) do you find to be so good that the Patriots can't afford the loss?

While you may be right, I think that he will play in a NYG uni this yr..although it may very well be his last yr there. His agent is pushing to knock a yr off of his deal, which would make him a UFA next February.

I know the patriots are looking like they are changing their defensive scheme here, but it still makes me very nervous to see them signing all of these longshot guys, it tells me their plan failed them somewhere along the line, and while i hope guys like brace, Cunningham, Love and Pryor can be salvaged, i get the feeling BB is getting tired of these guys being unable to practice or being disappointing when they do.

I'd call it creating competition rather than plan failure. Coming into the season we all knoew that Love, Pryor, Deaderick etc. were mediocre solutions at best. BB has upgraded and overhauled the defensive line extensively plus added competition at rush end/OLB. Isn't a passrush what we've all been clamoring for? These cumulative changes added together add up to exactly that, a chance at a much more potent passrush in 2011 than 2010.

They're offering an incentive that is VERY HARD to reach. 13.5 sacks is a LOT to ask. Osi has had double digit sacks before but never 14 or more. So I don't think this counts as much of an incentive for the Osi camp. Giants currently have the leverage though so they are taking the hardline stance. All Osi can do now is have his agent negotiate some more and possibly hold out once the season starts.

After all the recent additions, the Pats defense should be fine whether or not we manage to add a piece like Osi. Who knows maybe Roth will change his tune and sign for 2m, but that also seems unlikely. Actually the Osi situation gives me an idea, why not offer Roth 2m base with a 1m incentive if he reaches 10 or more sacks? Hmmm that's a possible 3m total if he exceeds expectations and would actually be a bargain for the performance.

Yeah I realize the NYG aren't offering much, but at the end of the day they have him under contract, they hold all the cards...

I don't see this marriage made in hell lasting more than this yr, but it's just a hunch that he plays one more yr with the Giants. They would've been happy to trade him for a 1st, but that isn't going to happen now, so why should they cave?

Regardless of any of it, I still don't see him coming here, but certainly wouldn't mind if I were wrong either.

Apparently the new CBA contains some clause stating that the Fan of the Year gets to suit up. Doesn't impact the salary cap.

It was a very complicated proposal, and they really didn't understand all the details. I'm sure much more of this stuff will come out.

OK, maybe they didn't think they were fine.

Anyway, Gerard Warren listed at 6-4.
Just saying.

Fine, and getting finer all the time. :)

I think we are good at DL/OLB. We got Hanesworth and Ellis. Both of them are beasts and will be great at causing destruction on the offensive line.

Absolutely loving all of the added depth and competition. I feel this will give the team the ability to have even more fronts and looks, and there were some players that were added who are quite talented still. Of course everyone won't make it, but the talent level will improve with this particular unit this yr, and that's what's most important.

And oddly enough, it didn't even involve taking any rookies in the draft, yet somehow Belichick still got it done ;)

Add G Warren to fill the last spot over Deaderick, Love and Pryor. BTW, I don't expect Anderson to make the 53. I'm fine with a total of 10. I do expect 1-2 players on the current projected 53 to be waived or put on the in-season PUP or IR lists.

I like what we have though.

Breaking it down:

DE/NT/DE in the 34 or DE/DT/DT in the 43
Haynesworth
Wilfork
Ellis
Brace
Wright
(a bunch of capable medocrity to fill in the last spot)

OLB in either
Ninkovich
Cunningham

OLB/DE
Cunningham (he could be in either slot if its a 43)
Carter
Moore
Anderson

Then spread that depth in the sub package, and we look strong and deep across the board.

if they are playing in a 4-3 then the defense would look someing like this

DT Haynesworth and Wilfork,
DE Carter and Ellis,
MLB Spikes,
OLB Mayo and Guyton,
SS Patrick Chung,
FS Brandon Meriweather,
CB McCourty and Bodden,

they should be better then last year
