Hmm.. A free safety.. I wonder if Belichick's got something up his sleeve other than just the due diligence

Goldson says that this has to be confidential. Sounds like us:

Twitter

Begin the 'Brandon Meriweather to be traded' and 'James Sanders to be cut' speculation in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

Considering how bad their team has been, in general, it's hard to take anything they says with anything more than a grain of salt..

BTW, this quote stands out to me:

Yet, in speaking with the coaches, Goldson got high marks for fulfilling his defensive assignments and keeping the ball in front of him.

So either the coaches were BS the person who asked the question or there was a personality conflict with Goldson. Otherwise, I see no reason for them to let him walk without some kind of offer.

Already did that in the Giants TE/OSI thread.. But that was before this thread started.. :p

It may have possibly been due to his contract demands (5 yrs $20m). 49ers managed to acquire Donte Whitner for $11.75m over 3 years ($4m guaranteed).

Interesting info... thanks..

How good is he? If he is atleast a solid starter at FS and makes Meriweather expendable then do it.

How can a Pro-Bowl safety be expendable................?

It always amazes me when people throw at the "He's a Pro-Bowler" line. The Pro-Bowl is a popularity contest and many times doesn't actually have the top players in it.

Meriweather is a free-lancer and someone who will be a UFA after the season. He's "expendable" because he freelances more than he plays within the system. It's why he was benched to start 2009. It's why he and BB have had issues... It's why Mayo was yelling at him in camp the other day.. He's a very good player, just not in the Pats system. Which is why he has value.

I don't like Meriweather. He's an unintelligent player who makes hard hits for penalties and tackles his own teammates so the opposing team can score a 60 yard touchdown.

I'll be glad when he's gone.

Yet here we have a poster, apparently in all seriousness, entertaining the idea of swapping Meriweather out for Dashon Goldson. That's not exactly addition by subtraction.

I was hoping my sarcasm would come across better.

Actually, it would be swapping out Meriweather for adding in Osi and Goldson since Osi is who I suggested that we trade Meriweather for.

And that is only if the Patriots see Goldson as someone who can play within the system without freelancing..

Still don't like it. An upgrade at DE offset by a significant downgrade at FS.

Umm...I think he was saying that about drug tests, not the Patriots.

It doesn't prove he was talking about the Patriots but I'm certain he's talking about a free agent visit. The guy he replied to had asked where he was looking at right now. Goldson had already answered his question about drug tests.

i don't see it as being a significant downgrade at FS if Goldson plays within the system. Just like I don't see it as a significant downgrade to go from Meriweather to Sanders.
