Who's this year's UDFA on the 53?

Another addition for the list in 2008 was BJGE. Sergio Brown for 2010 (but I don't know if he made the initial 53).

I'm pretty sure they both started out on the practice squad, at least for a while?

You are correct, patchick. He was waived, signed to the PS, and promoted in October.

With no mini-camp, no rookie camp and no mini-camp, I'd say none.

I thought they would keep four [GRONK, Hernandez, Crumpler, Smith]; I still think they'll keep four, with Yeatman in place of Crumpler.

At practice the other night Hernandez was working out with the WR position players.. not the TE's.. perhaps it is an experiment, but who knows.

So Yeatman may have a chance after all...

This. I see Hernandez and Price pushing Tate out of the 53 with Hernandez used mainly as a big WR so they will need 3 TE's and Yeatman gets in because of that.

I think Yeatman has a real shot. IFAIK Maneri hasn't played a snap at TE with the Patriots, and Solder has his hands full training for LT without practicing at TE. If Yeatman outplays Smith (which early reports suggest is possible) his path is clear. Or they could carry 4 with just 4 RBs.

The way things are going, Maneri could have moved past LeVoir on the Depth Chart.

The problem with Yeatman is his speed. He's not fast.. but, then, neither is Smith.. I could see the Pats cutting Yeatman and putting him on the Practice Squad should he clear waivers, which I believe he will.

It would certainly be unusual for a UDFA not to clear waivers (though come to think of it, wasn't that the story with Maneri last year?) One thing in the back of my mind with Yeatman is how over a dozen teams were fighting to sign him as a UDFA. If he continues to get rave reviews in camp and preseason games, I wouldn't be surprised to see somebody make him player 53.

You're well behind the curve, my friend.

Yeatman has one hell of a lot more than "a chance."

And that's clear for a while, now.

If a person has good change of direction ability and a good sense of field geometry they don't need to be fast in order to be effective, there are plenty of plays where guys really aren't moving all that fast but manage to pick up good yardage. So far Yeatman has apparently been very impressive on his ability to get open and make blocks, despite the fact that he didnt exactly wow anyone with his bench press numbers.

Strictly by his measurables Yeatman should not succeed in the NFL but by all accounts he is succeeding. One should also remember players with fantastic measurables that don't succeed, there are reasons for this.

Yeatman is officially my new binkie, he has the potential to prove that the software (4-dimensional processing ability) is given too little attention and the hardware (physical ability) is given far too much.
