Anyone else notice the teams lack of urgency at backing up the G/C position this crazy offseason?? Sure Mankins is franchised and Connolly is back but Neal retired and we arent exactly deep at that position to begin with. Did I miss anyone being snuck into camp? Are we expecting guys like Ohrny to step up? Wouldnt it be smart to have leverage against Mankins when negotiating by having a suitable backup? Competition that gets cut in camp...there seems to be at many positions but not so much here. Does the Light signing mean that Solder could backup at G too? What gives?

Solder is 6'9"...guard?...uh...that would be a no...unless there is some new type of O line hybrid theory out there

Hey I know its ridiculous, but I also know Dante does what he can to have his best 5 on the field at the same time. Hence that attempt at the Kaczur conversion last year.

We signed some G/C (Chris Morris or something? Can't remember, too lazy to look), but otherwise nothing I've noticed yet.

It's an area I'd like to see a another body added to as well. I like Connolly, but we have nothing behind him (unless we're counting on Cannon to be ready week 1).

1. We drafted Cannon.
2. Neal only played half of last season anyway. Its not like he played the whole year and now we're replacing him.
3. If Solder shows he can play, Light could probably move inside.
4. We signed some schlub, although he's probably camp fodder.
5. Who knows how some of the younger guys are progressing in camp-Dante?
6. We drafted CANNON!

If Cannon was a first round rookie who was completely healthy, I STILL wouldn't count on him the first half of the season due to the shortened camp and just normal rookie growing pains. Maybe he's doing fine, but I wouldn't mind another vet in there as a plan B.

The way I see it the front office's time was initially taken up with (a) signing undrafted free agents (b) re-signing vets such as Matt Light, Kevin Faulk, Sammie Morris, (c) working on trades for potential starters (Albert Haynesworth, Chad Ochocinco), and (d) bringing in NFL vet free agents for a workout, interview, and contract negotiations (Brock, Roth, Moses, Crowder, etc.) that could potentially start or at least be getting a substantial number of snaps.

Next will be a look at available free agents that would primarily be depth and backup that would not be expected to be on the field except if someone else got injured. So I would expect the Pats to address depth on the offensive line over the next week or so; perhaps re-signing Ojinnaka or signing a player or two to compete to take his place; maybe another player to compete with LeVoir; possibly a G/C to compete with Wendell.

Though Neal has indeed retired don't forget the Pats added two offensive linemen through the draft. Kaczur I don't count as a loss as he did not play a down with the Pats last year.

Some teams are waiting for cuts in the next few days to pick depth players up. Maybe then some moves regarding interior O-line come to fruition. Maybe.

Everyone writes off Ryan Wendell, but he's been pretty good when given the chance to play. Our depth at G is okay, and should get better as the season comes along with Cannon getting back into shape. Chris Morris might also add depth.

What we need is a new center... we'll just have to wait on that one, probably until next year. Koppen is good enough for now.

Look no further than Dante U. Thomas Austin is a sophomore (i.e. year two in the program), Orhnberger a Junior, and Wendell a Senior, and Connolly a fifth year senior.

I assume the thinking is that those guys are good enough, and know the system well enough, to hold down the fort at RG and the backup interior line positions as well or better than some random veterans.

Am I the only one uncomfortable with TB being 1 snap away from having Connolly and Wendell as starting Gs?? For all those rallying for Mankins(not me)and the "importance" of this position it just doesnt seem like a priority. Sure we can grab a late cut from another team but isnt the idea of OL play continuity? For all those counting on Cannon at G....Dante U. hasnt even accepted the guy yet.

You've got to be realistic; you can't be loaded at every position.

The Jets are one snap away from Vlad Ducasse protecting Sanchez's blind side. We're one snap away from having Mankins and Connolly being the starting guards for.... no I won't say it.

There's a salary cap, deal with it.

The team's got a problem at RG and with G/C depth. I'm sure BB knows that, and I'm sure he's looking for ways to address it.

I thought Cannon would Ride PUP all year? Or are we seriously entertaining putting him on the 6 or 8 week PUP and using him after his stint? (idk if that shortened PUP is 6 or 8 weeks?)

I really thought Cannon was a no go this yr.? I figured our medical red tape would quarantine him to this team, since other teams could not claim him off our practice squad. He has a viable PUP excuse written all over him. No way do we expect him on team this yr. Or am I totally wrong?

Exactly. Mankins/Neal go down, next one in. Connolly started 13 games and the Pats offense was historically efficient. The schedule was pretty average but had enough challenges to make the results mighty impressive.

Connolly goes down, next one in. In the 2 games the Pats got down to Wendell on the depth chart, they went 2-0 (outscoring 72-10), yielded 1 sack (6 total hits) and ran for 400 yds (4.6 ypc). Obviously the Bills and Fins aren't the best measuring stick, but they are division opponents and they just got spanked. Even Hoyer was able to move the team with ease.

Dante U. is the best and most cost effective way of filling your backup lineman roles. If they develop enough to start when called upon (Neal, Gorin, Ashworth, Hochstein, Connolly), that is a bonus. You can still draft your starters in the top 100...my ideal in 2012 would be:
LT - Solder 1st
LG - Mankins 1st
C - Ben Jones 2nd
RG - Cannon 5th (should have been top 100)
RT - Vollmer 2nd

Connolly, LeVoir, Wendell and Ohrnberger will likely have graduated by then, but Austin (needed to get stronger), Maneri (position convert) and others will take their place. All for minimal salaries. All highly motivated to prove themselves when they get the change. Seems like a solid plan to me.

Yes, but couldn't you say something similar about the 31 other NFL teams?

Given the reality of the constraints of the salary cap, who is it that the Pats should have acquired that has signed elsewhere since free agency started?
