From Adam Schefter on NFL Network: Both the Raiders and Titans claimed Gabriel off waivers, but the Raiders had first dibs because of their record. Randy Moss might be out with an injury, which means Gabriel could start for them Sunday. Sooooo, the Raiders get their guy back and keep a "free" fifth-rounder from the Pats. Makes us look sort of bad.

Yeah, we lost a 5th rounder. It was a mistake. But not exactly a franchise shattering one. No biggie, just a small loss.

Re: Raiders get Gabriel back

Watch Gabriel have a big game and then we'll have to listen to all the crickets on this board.

Re: Raiders get Gabriel back

Watch Raiders win their last 3.

Re: Raiders get Gabriel back

Watch pigs fly!!!

Re: Raiders get Gabriel back

It's more damaging that we lost the fifth, in my opinion. Koppen, O'Callaghan... both fifth rounders.

But then, PK Sam and Mincey were too. So I should cheer up.

.... Makes us look sort of bad.

Makes the other guys willing to trade with us.

(And i had thought Gabe was such a steal at 5!)

And for a few weeks there it really seemed like he was. I honestly thought he was on his way to a 900 yard season with 8 TDs.

Re: Raiders get Gabriel back

I thought I remembered reading in an article somewhere when Gabriel was cut that it was actually a conditional 5th we traded.

If true makes you wonder if one of the conditions wasn't that he play in N number of games and that last week wasn't N-1.

Hopefully someone smarter than me can clarify.......

I fekt the same way...

Honestly, I don't think they gave him enough a chance.

Belichick says it was srictly an "on field performance" decision, but I have to doubt that...

As bad as they need recievers, they really should have given him a better shot...

The lions spent 3 1st rounders on WRs and started a backup QB at WR against us. Kind of puts missing on a fifth rounder in perspective.

The Patriots have a system. If you want to freelance instead of learning your assignments you're gone.

We don't have time to screw around, playoffs are coming.

Yeah, what's he gong to say? BB (and most good coaches) never drag muck through the media. It serves no purpose.

"We appreciate all he's done for us."

Gabriel signed by OAK

Sorry, no link. From the ticker watching ESPN.

My curiosity: If true, is this some under-the-radar type manuever between Oak and NE?

Oak is in rough shape and needs players. NE needed/needs receivers. Is this some back room handshake deal in preparation for the off-season draft? i.e.: Alleviate the WR pressure situation in Oak for a temporary stop-gap in NE, with the understanding being that Oak would get Gabriel back. In turn the 5th rounder would be coupled with additional picks later, in deal-time. Essentially: the 5th rounder would be considered pre-payment in a later deal to facilitate NE using it's multiple mid-round picks to move up in position (using Oak's anticipated high position) while providing an opportunity for Oak to pick up multiple but lower picks? Perhaps a deal large enough to circumvent league mandates on fairness, etc..

Or just an original fair deal and low-grade coup by Oak?

Re: Gabriel signed by OAK

Ok. So this is old news, evidently.

I am sorry and prepared to take the written lambasting for wasting the space and time of those already in the know.

That said, what of my possibly ridiculous curiosity?

Re: Gabriel signed by OAK

shame on you. naughty naughty. there, you happy? or i could go ahead and hijack this thread with making the points that it is not gabriel's fault. we didnt run enough inside slants or crossing patterns and JM stinks and needs to be replaced.

i do not like either we totally lost one 5th round pick too

The latter. There is no way Oakland could have known at the time of the trade what its record would be at this point in the season so it could be assured of claiming Gabriel back off waivers. The team with the fewest losses always gets first dibs on waived players. If they had any such agreement with the Pats, the waiver process wouldn't have been part of it.

Very good point. But then, the fact that one of the worst teams in the NFL is what we're having to use as comparison to feel better doesn't really make me feel better, as we're supposed to be the best! lol

I wonder if Gabriel's release will effect the draft pick? All accounts from both the Pats and the Raiders said that he was traded for the ever present "undisclosed draft pick". Media accounts say that it was for a fifth round pick. I'm just wondering if their were any conditions on that draft pick that would be effected by Gabriel's release, or will it remain a 5th round pick.
