Only $4M of space? Where the hell has all the money gone, into pass-rushers?

My suggestion: because of his dual-income status that ensures his progeny never has to work again
for the next couple of centuries, Brady might want to consider a contract restructuring
that allows Bill to obtain the pieces needed to make a real, honest run at one more SB.
Because as it is currently comprised, this team will be nothing more than 1 & Done, if that.

If Plan A isn't an option, then why the hell did Bill ass-ume the salaries of Ochostinko & Fat Albert?
There were/are cheaper, just-as-good WRs & DLmen available who don't occupy almost 7 figures of cap space.

Around a million. The 51st player now has a salary of $525K. Solder's 2011 cap number can be no higher than $1.55 million. $1.55 million minus $525K is around a million dollars.

I disagree that Brady restructuring his contract is necessary for the patriots to win another superbowl. In fact I think the team has the talent on BOTH sides of the ball to make a good, honest run at the big game. The offense was amazing last year, and now Brady has another nice toy to play with in Ocho, and the defense has Bodden coming back, and a major addition in Fat Al. With a full year under their belt this defense should be a much stronger force to be reckoned with. They have the players and talent to make a good honest run IMO, whether they pull together and make it happen remains to be seen...

If both Haynesworth and Ocho agreed to a restructure today, maybe they knock $2m off each? Both have way too high salaries at present, but nothing is guaranteed. If we guarantee their 2011 salaries, at $2m less, that would take us back up to $10m.

As Miguel then said, each time you sign a new guy, another guy falls off the bottom of the list, so, theoretically, we could sign 4 guys, at a cap charge of $3m each for 2011 (which is about what Santonio Holmes' cap charge is for 2011), to be at the limit.

Then, assuming it's not exactly the players with the 51 highest cap figures which make the roster, some small wiggle room will turn up when the last round of cuts happen. If someone like Wilhite doesn't make it, that's another $800k freed up.

It relies on the Albert & Ocho salary cuts, but it's not too bad a situation to be in.

Redoing Ocho is a given - and apparently was done before the trade but has been held in abeyance so he could practice. Redoing Albert isn't. His salary isn't getting much smaller unless you want to create a potential cap crunch for next season. Better to have him on what is essentially a prove it deal with an option for a second season. If he pans out and shows some consistency in the attitude and performance area you think about reworking his entire remaining deal which is essential-ly BS even the Skins' were not likely to opt into - sometime in 2012. Guys don't generally lose money in restructures, they gain something. In Ocho's case it will reportedly be a year or two of unguaranteed salary. In Albert's case it's too risky to guarantee him anything beyond a chance until he proves he's a changed man.

They should be focused on getting Mankins extended if they want additional cap space. He could easily free up $4M+. They only have 25 days left to get that done or he's on the tag all season. The can also get reasonable 2-3 year extensions done for Welker and possibly BJGE, not to mention add a transition year onto Koppen's deal since they haven't yet drafted his replacement. Those would free up another $3-4M easily and without jamming you up you against the cap in 2012 or 2013.

Florio has been leaking out reports on cap space for a couple of days. He lists 7 teams over the cap, 11 teams with $20M or more in space remaining and finally has listed the 14 teams in the middle, including NE. Per his source as of Tuesday the NEP were $9.2M under the cap. FWIW since we don't know which signings were included in the figures he got or whether his source is legit, I'd lean towards Miguel's projections.
