Old philosophy

Relying on players to be responsible for multiple gap coverage along the line of scrimmage and be diligent and aware in protecting their assigned zones. Present multiple defensive alignments with numerous in game situational sub packages in order to keep the opposition off balance. Create multiple "looks" in zone coverage in order to disguise actual alignment and assignments.

If they secondary improves (which i have no doubt it will) and they can put pressure on the QB, its going to be a fun season.

I'm excited. They've got Haynesworth. I'm expecting one of Raheem Brock, Osi Umenyiora, Matt Roth, and my sleeper Andre Carter. Having Bodden opposite McCourty will free up Chung and Meriweather for blitzing. Spikes should FSU at MLB behind the 700 pound DT wall.

Yeah, I've wanted to see a "more aggressive" defense for a while now. As much as I hate Rex Ryan, I do love what he does defensively.

I've gotten a bit tired of watching this team 2-gap and play bend but don't break. I'd like to see some more penetrating by the DL, some more run blitzing, some more press-man coverage with exotic blitz packages.

Some of that will come with the maturation of the secondary and LB corps, but some of it needs to be Bill. Will he change his philosophy or will he stick with his roots/old ways? Going after guys like Haynesworth and Harris and potentially Osi according to some reports seems to be a switch in philosophy. Guess we will just have to wait and find out.

In truth, I don't think a 180 degree or even 90 degree change is even possible. I do however believe that they will introduce packages that allow for more of a power one gap attacking style then they've had in the recent past.

Our defense was a weakness last year...if BB feels that this will improve our team i'm all for it.

Part of it could also be total confidence in the offense. If you feel like your offense has all the weapons and versatility to consistently put up points, you can afford to play a more aggressive style of defense. I think people will be disappointed though if they think it's going to be all out all the time... BB isn't just going to abandon his gap discipline style completely in the course of one shortened off-season. This just all opens up more variations for him to work with, IMO.

I still feel that they will be a team that runs multiple fronts shifting from the 3-4 to 4-3 or other hybrids. I am very very concerned of over using the 4-3 and putting such a focus on the two DTs (Wilfork and Haynesworth). Wilfork is a tough SOB and played close to 70+ snaps in a game last year I don't think big Albert can hold up more than 20-25.

For the 4-3 this is my sketch of current depth:
LDE - Moore, Wright
DT - Haynesworth, Brace
DT - Wilfork, Wright (on 3rd downs)
RDE - Cunnigham / Ninkovich

Honestly I can't tell the difference between the rest of the linemen so I don't know how they fit ( Pryor, Weston, Richard, Love, Cohen, Steve Williams)

They must look at it like the Packers do, go ahead and run it at 700+ pounds of defensive tackle see if we care, our offense is going to get 25+ and we will win.

I think I agree with you. I think we'll see this new type of 'aggressive' D on 3rd downs more than anything - we had a terrible time with 3rd downs last year, and I think that BB is going to let the dogs out on 3rd down this year to try to stop some of those 3rd and long conversions that made us throw up in our mouths so much last year.

It won't be on every third down, and it wont only be on third down, but I think thats the major issue he's trying to solve for.

This is a good point to make.

The only difference I think we are going to see is an increase in the number of 40 front nickels.

BB runs a multiple front defense because his football background is broad. He didn't coach 2-gap until Parcells took over the Giants. BB has never been a 2-gap 3-4 true believer. That was always Parcells. While Parcells was retooling Miami into a 3-4, BB was going in a new direction.

Umm, that sounds nice if it were true. BB has runa 2gap defense every season of his career that it has been his decision. He has always run the BASE at 90%+ 3-4 or 4-3 whichever he used at the time. This idea that he swithces back and forth is fabricated.

So I understand you are also a 2-gap true believer. Good coaches change their scheme to fit personnel. That's what the Orange Crush Broncos did. BB was on that staff too.

BB has been influenced by the 4-3 and 3-4. That is a fact.

BB is more open to schematic change than Parcells. Also a fact.
