I'm sorry, but the media's treatment of this story makes me want to vomit.

- Manning took no less than Brady. Especially if you look at the contract and see what he got up front. Let's see if Manning really plays year 4 & 5 at those salaries...
- Tom Brady has won the MVP 2 of the last 3 years he's been healthy.
- Tom Brady just won the MVP, the first unanimous winner ever.
- Peyton Manning is coming off his worst season (passer rating, INTs, yd/att) since 2002.
- Peyton Manning had his second neck surgery and won't start camp on time.

Yet the media wants us to expect that Manning took a huge discount. No, Tom Brady - the best player in the league and MVP - set the market.

The bottom line is Manning got what he's worth - money comparable to Brady, yet wants to portray himself as a saint and a team player in the media. Brady made no such proclamations when he took a nearly identical deal, coming off a deal that over the last 6 years was worth 2/3rds what Manning was.

Talk is cheap. He went that long without a deal for a reason. Irsay might have made those statements to the media, but they never reached an agreement until Manning lowered his price.

Actually Manning is getting MUCH more than Brady over the first 3 years of the contract. Remember Brady is 2 years YOUNGER than Manning. Clearly the Colts wanted to front load the contract for Manning's likely most productive years. On the other hand Brady most likely has signed his last Patriot's contract, but not his final NFL contract

So since they are making "the same money", Brady is really making more than Manning.

While Manning may indeed have taken less money than he could have made if he and his agent had played hardball during negotiations, to me this is a huge non-story. To portray somebody receiving $18 million a year as taking a hometown discount is disingenuous, at minimum. If Manning had signed for half or what he could have made, then the story is legit; signing for five percent less than what he could have otherwise made is not.

That being said, I do agree with Mogamedogz' comment that there are times when our collective homerism shines through in a less than flattering light. Manning is a great player and will be a unanimous choice to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

In this particular case though I have nothing against what Manning did; however I do question the media's portrayal of this signing.

Irsay was set on making Manning the highest-paid player, in part because of Irsay's own pride I'm sure. By paying Manning more than Brady, he would claim Manning was the better player. To Manning, it didn't really matter since he's absolutely rich before the deal, absolutely rich after the deal, and would have been absolutely rich if he took the other deal. Not sure what the big fuss is about.

The notion that Manning somehow took less is BS of epic proportions. With $69 million of the $90 million total payable in the first three years, it should be apparent to anyone still breathing that Manning has no intention whatsoever of playing out the last two years of the deal at a paltry $10.5 million per year.

Colt owner Jim Irsay is a congenital idiot whose negotiating posture was to drop his pants, bend over and grab his ankles. Should Manning be hurt or simply lose interest after year 3, the Colts would find themselves with $15 million of dead money related the the contract of a 38 year old QB (giving Manning even more leverage when the time comes).

I'm not being critical of Manning. He's a terrific player and I think it's good for the NFL that he is staying with the Colts. Football fans everywhere should thank God for the Brady/Pats-Manning/Colts rivalry, far and away the best in football.

However, I continue to be disgusted with the Sporting Press being dominated by Manning sycophants who would stand on their chairs and applaud if #19 took a dump in the middle of the field during the national anthem.

It is all spin. Manning got more up front and more guaranteed for taking "less". Manning is the highest paid player in the NFL and by aboout $5 million.

I didnt like his whining any more than anyone else here but he wants to win more than anything else and he has played his ass off against the Patriots over the years and has made the rivalry with Brady one that will define both of them for good. The only thing that mattered in this contract is the guaranteed money and the first two or three years. Manning will never see years four and five. He got the front-loaded deal he needs at his age at $23 million/year, and will be the highest paid player each of the first three years.

In 2011, Peyton Manning also gets to eat Oreos and watch Curtis Painter play QB for the Colts from Irsay's luxury box. Not a bad life.

Slow down there. First, I did mention the $100M offer was back-loaded:

As for how much Manning sees and when, yes, he will see more upfront. But the guaranteed component probably didn't vary much between the deals.

Bottom line is Manning could have dug in and asked for more, and quite frankly, the Colts would have had to pay it after Irsay's idiotic comments guaranteeing to make him the highest-paid player.

I just don't see why people are getting so worked up about this one way or another. That $2M difference won't mean the difference between a Super Bowl or not.
