Making the case for Osi Umenyiora

The Pats have released a lot of vets recently, including Ty Warren, Marcus Stroud, and Nick Kaczur. In all that means they have cleared about 10m to play with. The Pats also told Ty Warren that they were 'moving in a different direction' defensively. When you look at players like Warren and Stroud you think big 'space-eating' monsters. Not so much passrushers. In short, I think New England wants to crank up the heat on QBs in season 2011.

Albert Haynesworth heralds this new breed of New England defender. Not only is he nasty against the run, he can pressure the QB by collapsing the pocket, bullrushing the OL, etc. And before Vince became the dominant 'space-eating' DT we all know and love now, he also excelled at an attacking role for the Hurricanes at the collegiate level. I think with Albert playing next to him, we could also see Vince making an impact on the QB's comfort level.

Which brings us to Osi Umenyiora. Putting Osi on the weakside at defensive end next to Haynesworth would bring a whole new level of chaos and aggression to the Pats defense. Osi has reached double digits in sacks 3 times in the past 5 seasons including 11.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles in 2010. He's currently holding out and the Giants recently resigned Matthias Kiwanuka as a possible lower cost replacement.

Sooo, in swoops BB offering a 2nd round pick and a conditional pick ranging from a 4th up to another 2nd (based on playoff appearances/victories perhaps), and obtains the negotiating rights to Osi. Considering how much money the Giants save, the pick capital they gain, and the likely price to retain Osi, doesn't this deal make sense for both sides?

Suddenly the Pats entire defense is revamped with an aggressive look. The new breed of Patriots defender isn't content with just occupying space and waiting for mistakes, they attack the QB, pursue, harrass, and pulverize him into forcing those mistakes and creating costly turnovers. So let's continue to give this defense a facelift, BB. Osi Umenyiora could well be the next big Patriots acquisition!

He showed up for camp yesterday but that don't mean squat. As far as I'm concerened we could finish the transformation of this defense now with a player like him.

No case needs to be made. Osi is a difference maker! Averaging 10 sacks and 5 forced fumbles over the last 5 years, only 29, by far the biggest difference maker of the off-season if he moves.

I have lots of friends who are Giants fans and they all say the same thing - beast!

If he's signable I'd consider a 2nd rounder maybe even just one of our 1st's. As valuable as draft picks are I truly think he is the last element for a beginning of another dynasty here in New England.

I've been screaming Osi's name for the past few days around here. With Cullen Jenkins off the board I can't think of a better edition to our defense than Osi, he'll cost us more, but can you really argue he's not worth it, considering our apparent scheme change (if that truly holds weight)?

I am still waiting to find out what this next move we make is because I'm totally buying into all the speculation that "new england isn't done yet", we've got the cap space, we can make more by signing Mankins to a long term deal, and we have a hole on the D-Line with warren out.

I don't normally allow myself to get over-excited about things that have not happened yet, nor do I make wild predictions, especially about the Pats. However, this would just be incredible. All these years of the "Pats don't have a pass rush" would be solved in a matter of days. NE would lead the league in sacks (very possible), and the defense would be every bit as daunting as it was during the SB years of the early decade.

Osi was always one of my favorite Giants and I would LOVE to see him in a NE uniform. How I wish BB would make this happen. I really would be bouncing off the walls of my apartment if this happens.

Putting aside sampling issues, this formula gives you no indication of when they were successful. Osi lines up on the end against left tackles every play. He isn't blitzing. And while they want to act like 'pressures' are so important, put turnovers caused and I bet Osi jumps to the line.

But heck, I'm feeling magnanimous, let both of them don the Flying Elvis.

Not the Dungeons and Dragons site again. We already have the best pass rushing DT in the NFL in Mike Wright according to their findings. There was no need to bring in Haynseworth, if Belichick had just logged on he would of known.

Actually Wright deserves more credit. I predicted before last season that he would have the most sacks on the Pats in 2010, and he did... 5.5 in 10 games. True, doesn't mean he's better than Haynesworth, but we know what we have in Wright and IMO he will be even better this year if we go to a 4-3. Hopefully Haynesworth is better.

Umenyiora, Haynesworth, Wilfork, Cunningham with Lawson, Spikes and Mayo behind them would be an ok way to go into the season. And of course we know what we have in the secondary.

But he wants to be paid on par with the best DEs.

I really don't watch many Giants games, so I'm not very knowledgeable about the ins and outs about Osi's game; but I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that he's a 1 dimensional game and that although he's a great pass rusher, teams will run on him.
Is this accurate or way off?

Tuck was definitely better all-around, but Osi has a first step you can't teach. That's why he wants to get paid, and why he won't come to the Pats.
