FYI... Miguel - Update on Dead Cap Money Topic

I just read this from Broncos writer Dave Krieger:

Their cap situation will also improve markedly next Thursday, when the NFL's 2011 league year belatedly begins. Peter Ruocco, the league's senior vice president of labor relations, confirmed Thursday that all dead money — money amortized from the contracts of cut or traded players — will come off the salary caps of all NFL teams in the new league year. That will clear roughly $17 million off the Broncos' books and put them well under the $120 million cap.
This provision of the new collective bargaining agreement was first reported locally by the Mile High Report, a Broncos blog that quoted the relevant portion of the as-yet- unpublished CBA. It will ease salary cap pressure on a number of teams, but few more so than the Broncos because of their high player turnover in the past couple of years.

Were you aware of this? I don't believe the Patriots have a ton of dead money, but figured I would pass it along.

IF all teams get this provision not just those few cuting players early, who somehow "knew" and acted by 11 March then it's likely that this provision was simply a concession to the players union thereby freeing up tens of million$ that teams could spend on players. The side benefit is that once again irresponsible organizations again escape the consequences of their decisions.

Broncos who were innocent bystanders who benefited from the Jets/Goodell corruption.

Lucky as hell for them because their mgmt was terrible. At least they have Tebow to save their franchise.

Thing is they have added dead money and will possibly continue to with cuts prior to the start of the league year. This rule should be amended to allow for dead cap forgivness for players cut prior to the start of the new league year as opposed to prior to the expiration of the prior CBA. Teams couldn't cut anyone in the interim until yesterday and can't officially sign anyone until tonight.

Bill commented the other day that some of the so called transition rules have changed or interpretations clarified over the the last couple of days. Perhaps this rule had some fluidity. It is odd that he notes that dead cap will return in 2012 for players cut after June 1...

That would mean the clause that ESPN released (which is again MIA anywhere it was linked) was still subject to being tweeked to make the cutoff the start of the new league year as opposed to the end of the old CBA.

To be fair to everyone, I think you have to use the later cutoff, since a lot of teams refrained from releasing folks precisely because they didn't know what the cap ramifications might be.

Of course, the Patriots benefitted a year ago when they released Adalius Thomas without consequence during the uncapped year.

That would have been prohibitively expensive during a capped year. He had a large unamortized signing bonus remaining.

To be fair to everyone, I think you have to use the later cutoff, since a lot of teams refrained from releasing folks precisely because they didn't know what the cap ramifications might be.

That might also explain Dallas suddenly jumping in to the Nnamdi auction... They were reportedly $18M over the cap last week and could free up that and more with releases and restructures. But if they face no dead cap now on guys they have since released like Williams and Barber, they would have created a lot more cap space...

That would have been prohibitively expensive during a capped year. He had a large unamortized signing bonus remaining.

Yeah, but that option was open/known to everyone and everyone who wanted to took advantage of it. The difference being the JETS dumped players AFTER THE SEASON ENDED whose dead cap represented future seasons and would normally hit the following season - and the clause as reported specifically wiped that out (players cut prior to March 11 when the old CBA expired). While not wiping it out for players cut before the start of a new league year or ratification of a new CBA.

Personally I have always thought that the teams in states with no income taxes would have a huge advantage recruiting free agents, because their net income would be so much higher. But in reality it seems to have virtually no impact on where free agents go. If it did then the top free agents would annually end up with the Dolphins, Bucs, Jaguars, Texans and Cowboys - and historically that has simply not been the case.

No Texas state taxes means an extra 5% or so in Aso's wallet......that's all things being equal with the $$$$ offered....

I'm torn between WANTING Jets to get him and having him go to Dallas....
I think Pats have enough weapons that they can win an offensive battle...
Sanchez with only one legit real good reciever shouldn't scare the Patriot's D.

What does everything pushed out to next year mean though? Are the Jets on the hook for their 8.6 next year instead of this?

That would be much more fair and it looks like some owners did indeed see through Badell's blatant attempt to help his team.
