Yeah, good point. They'll want that $3-5M in cap room asap. My prediction is now under a week!

I think the can sign Logan for something in the 4 year/$30M range if they include a no-franchise tag clause in it so he can test the waters if he wants in 4 years for a final contract. He'll still be only 33 which is still young for a guard.

I'm glad to see that the Jahri Evans type contract is a thing of the past.

Believe read somewhere that in 2014 the Salary Cap will explode, so you can give him a good contract where the cash kicks in around that time..

More and more am thinking he will be a Patriot for a long time...

Is it a thing of the past? It seems to me that with the recent signings just from yesterday, that Mankins would be worth at least 8 million a year now.

Yanda just signed for 6 1/2 per year, as a guard too. Mankins is certainly a step or two above him.

Doug Free just got 8 million per year, as a tackle.

I'm not sure I'd totally agree that these are as reasonable as you may think, but we all have different opinions, so I could be wrong.

I think he'll get that one way or another, whether it's here or not. He may even get something that averages out to 8 1/2 million per yr.

Yeah, I agree. We all saw the positive effect that he had when he came back last yr. We also agree that 8 million or so is usually too high for a guard, but in this case/this specific scenario with TFB himself/improved protection/running game etc, we pretty much need to sign him.

$8M for a LT is cheap IMO especially since they are not going to have to overpay Tyron Smith either because of the Rookie cap.

I think Mankins will be in the $7.5M/yr range just a step above the Nick Mangold deal from last year.

The Saints overpaid for Evans in an uncapped year and if he continues to lead the league for Guards in Penalties he won't be there after 2012. His Salary jumps from $3M in 2011-12 to $7.2M+ for 2013-2016.

The actual number Mankins gets paid WILL be too much on paper, the thing is that he's one of the best, if not THE BEST Guard in the league, and our offense is MUCH better with him rather than without him.

That and we are in the middle of retooling the entire O-line, how many moving parts do we want in play on that O-line? Too many rookies at once means Brady gets hit a LOT, next year we'll be hopefully bringing in a new Center and a new RG if I get my way, we need consistency and experience with the guys protecting our less than mobile QB.

Awesome! This is what we've been waiting for.... with Mankins here hopefully that O-line will stay true, we need Brady protected and Mankins was key for this.

Brady is very pocket mobile; he is adept at making small movements within the pocket to assist his blockers and avoid some of the rush.

Brady is NOT very out of the pocket mobile (i.e. a 'rushing QB').

Seeing how all the 'mobile' (rushing QBs) seem to have to learn how to be POCKET QBs in order to have any success (beyond the ESPN top 10 highlight reel anyway); then I don't think we should really care about Brady being 'not mobile'.

That said - consistency throughout the year (or better said STABILITY in the positions) has always been key to successful OL work - so I don't disagree there.

But we have plenty of good talent; Dante just needs to sort it out and get the right 5 working together day-in/out. The right 5 is that much better with Mankins in the mix. Let's hope so.

Will will "overpay" at LG. Perhaps it is best to look at LG/LT together. Protecting a right-handed quarteback requires a solid LG/LT combination?

We are working to overpay at LG because we will be underpaying at LT. Spending less at LT allows us to spend more at LG. Our five 4-5 year cap at LG/LT will be quite reasonable.

If we were talking about pre-injury Brady I'd agree with you but since he's come back his small movement skills have diminished quite a bit. I stand by my post.

Mankins deserves to be the highest paid OG in football because he is the best OG in football. They can easily afford it because the unit cost is low, especially if they don't re-sign Light and cut Kaczur as expected. Protecting Brady,especially from interior pressure is essential to their success and having Mankins at LG for the rest of Brady's career is the best move they can make to ensure that.
