Was the NFL's decision to not count dead money against team's salary cap for players cut prior to the lockout justified? Could it have been part of a clandestine conspiracy? Or is Roger Goodell simply a bumbling fool?...

Interesting speculation there. The timing ont he dead money cap amnesty does look pretty suspcious. Why March 11th? Why not extend it to the new waiver period so teams can dump veterans to get under the cap yet not get penalized for dead money. They'd still need to spend new money to get back up to the 'cap floor' anyways. Things that make you go hmmmm. There's no way to prove that Goodell tipped off the Jets but it still looks awful shady.

Are we sure that is definitely in the CBA? All I have seen is a link to some pdf excerpt of what could be the CBA. Its hard to tell if that is a draft, final or even made up.

There was another proposal floated around just before last Thursday's vote that Clayton said ultimately was dropped. It would have allowed teams with leftover cap space from 2009 to push it forward to 2011 (since they could have if 2010 hadn't been uncapped). I don't think the JETS had any cap space left in 2009...just sayin'.

I know I am the biggest conspiracy theorist on this board when it comes to the Jets/Goodell cabal...but as time goes by any reasonable person has to admit what I put forth 4 years ago seems to be constantly reinforced by subsequent actions/inaction by Goodell vis a vis the Jets...season after season...after a while one has to begin to think there MUST be something to this recurrent theme.

Not really. IF this is accurate, which we still dont know they would have about 7 mill of cap room,before signing draft choices, and that is with a team that includes something like 25-30 guys at the minimum, guys who have never played in the NFL and are not this years rookie class. They have done such a good job of making their decent players think they are great, everyone wants a superstar contract now. Jets are still in cap/rpster/depth problems

if the jets are ~7 million under the cap, they can borrow 3 million from 2012, restructure sanchez to free up again 3 or 4 million, then sigh harris to free up 2, meaning they will have about 15 million to play with, which is a stark contrast from the 4-5 million they would have had otherwise.

but then again, i dont know all of the details so all of this is pure speculation.

Let's not be so quick to blame Goodell. 31 other teams had access to the same information about who cut whom and when they cut them; it's all a matter of public NFL record. All 31 allowed the clause to stand in the final agreement.

If the jets were the only ones smart enough to look ahead months ago when they were making their cuts, slip the clause into the agreement and then take advantage of the fact that no one caught it, we shouldn't complain but rather wonder why the other teams didn't close the loophole or plan ahead as craftily themselves.

If this is true (there's that "if" again) and I were an NFL owner, especially in the AFC and AFC East, I'd be doing a lot of yelling at whomever I trusted to go over the final agreement with a fine tooth comb.

Awfully interesting that the "no outdoor Super Bowls" unwritten rule was broken when the Jets got their new stadium. That's going to add a few tens of millions to the naming deal they get.

Does espn count? I know they aren't always the most reliable, but you did mention Schefter and this is obviously an NFL document, not some talking head repeating a rumor. Don't shoot the messenger; here's a PDF they have from the new CBA. Go to Page 57, Section 5, part (b); then look specifically at subsection (i):

Proration from Preexisting Contracts. For Preexisting Contracts, any proration under the Salary Cap rules under the Prior Agreement (including amounts treated as signing bonus) to any League Year covered by this Agreement shall continue to be charged to Team Salary for those League Years, provided that (i) no signing bonus proration to the League Years of this Agreement shall apply for any Preexisting Contract that was terminated, traded or assigned via waivers prior to March 11, 2011, and (ii) any Preexisting Player Contract entered into in the 2010 League Year shall have maximum proration of six years (including the 2010 League Year). Notwithstanding the foregoing, any Preexisting Contract that was traded or assigned via waivers and then renegotiated or extended prior to March 11, 2011 to include any signing bonus or amount treated as signing bonus shall have such bonus prorated as if the renegotiation or extension were a new Contract, unless such second Contract was terminated, traded or assigned via waivers prior to March 11, 2011.

Jets are reportedly chasing Asomougha (spelling is way off, I know). So yeah, I'd say they have quite a bit more wiggle room under the cap than was originally thought.

If this provision is actually in the new CBA--and it certainly looks like it is--hopefully it will come to light so that fans of all of the teams who didn't conveniently benefit from it can get properly angry.

To me this is huge news, but sports reporters generally try to avoid making statements about cap space because it is such a confusing topic. but apparently some teams benefit from it more than others.

And based on that Dallas would be rightfully pissed off - even more than anyone else, and even though they are in different conferences - if indeed some other team had this inside information beforehand and they did not.

I sent an email to Florio about it and used a lot of the comments you guys said about this (b/c you knows know more than me about this) and I still haven't heard anything or seen a post by him about it
