Can't see how they CAN do anything other than sign Manning. Without him, they become irrelevant... He makes them a contender. I have to think the neck problems won't be crippling.

Glad our QB is already signed and healthy. Coming off an mvp season also helps.

That isn't what Irsay was intimating. He was saying had they known the cap was going down Brady might not have gotten the deal he did. I think Kraft knew though... That is just Irsay posturing that Manning should not look for much more because the cap went down. Maybe he should have pointed out he's older too...

Brady's cap numbers per Miguel are:

•2010: $17,427,280
•2011: $13,200,000
•2012: $15,200,000
•2013: $18,200,000
•2014: $18,200,000

His new money on the 4 year extention averaged $18M per year but because it was signed last season and retained the last year on his old deal the entire deal averages $16.4M. I think Irsay is trying to ease Manning's deal under the $20M mark. Ideally closer to 18 point something... We will see if Condon is buying that rationale...

Manning also already has $1.67M in amortization from his old deal waiting to be added to his new deal in the first two years (2011-2012) because Polian pushed it into his voidable years (his last deal in 2004 was written as 9 years $108M but it voided to 7 years $98M) to help manage the cap... The only way Irsay can get Peyton's cap number into manageable range this time is to once again show him the big signing bonus money plus some roster bonus $$ and then amortize it. I wouldn't be surprised to see Peyton sign a (possibly also heavily salary backloaded) 7 year extension so that they can go 6 on initial amortization and 5-6 on conversion to lower the cap hits as much as possible for the next 2-3 years. That will probably leave them with a couple of years of dead cap once he's retired... But by then, the new kid QB won't be making much on his rookie deal...and the cap will have grown possibly substantially following the new TV deals in 2014.

but don't forget that tidbit on the cap structure of this new deal. Each team gets to exempt $3M cap hit from one player's salary in 2011 and $1.5M exemption in 2012.

There is no way in heck that clause wasn't a crumb thrown Irsay's way by the NFL, Kraft and the Players Union in order to get the Dolts to agree to the deal. There is no other team (well maybe jesters) who needs that clause so badly in order to stay somewhat competitive this year.

Interesting because the structure will most likely define the end of the Manning era. The Colts also have the problem of aging veterans who want to get paid. As such, many of the reports out seem to indicate Manning way want out.

I wonder if they regret not drafting a QB? Imagine the picks they could have accumulated if they blew the team up and starting rebuilding.

I had to laugh when I just read this, because last night watching NFL Live bspn used the same quote - but stopped at "he is going to make more than Brady". By doing so it gave the viewers a completely different message than what the full quote provided here by PFT did.

This backpedaling began, I think, when Irsay said they ALREADY offered Manning $25M/year and he turned it down. It seems he's genuinely aiming for $30M/year, which will doom that team competitively within a year or two. But football's a business, and Manning means too much to that organization beyond on field production. He'll get basically whatever he dares to ask, which apparently is something utterly ridiculous.

I hope he gets $30M/year. It'll be another reason to be grateful for Brady.

I don't doubt or question anythign you say, but.... when I started following pro football, the only numbers you cared about for your QB were completions, yardage, TDs.....:bricks:

Trade him a year early ................ for a boatload of pix. Dallas, Washington, PHILLY ........ big market teams with a load of advertising for Manning. He could make 75m on a big market team per year.

I still wince when I remember his ad time after they won the Super Bowl.

I'd rather see the Colts overpay for Manning, then watch them fall aprt because they can't afford to pay for the supporting pieces to make him successful. Now that would be the ultimate irony. Manning gets his fat contract but dooms his team to mediocrity because of the size of that contract.

I'd rather see him leave to Washington or something and do nothing with their WR corps for the rest of his career and at the same time watch Indy put Curtis Painter on the field and fail to do anything with the likes of Wayne, Garcon, and Clark around him.
