Roth brought the heat in 2010

Have to sneak in PFF references now?

Football Outsiders gave Roth fewer pressures than TBC (3.5 v 5 sacks, 7 hits each, 25 pressures each).

I can't understand why some people like him. He's been let go by two teams and has had very average stats. Unless you just want a body, I'd pass.
Because PFF, that rag of a publication said he's "wicked pissah".

I guess I'm glad to see someone else in the media who feels the same way I do about WR - just as in 2006 I've heard a great many people note how strong the defense is without a deep threat WR

And statistically they're correct

2. Wide receiver -- The Patriots led the NFL in scoring last season (32.4 points per game) and tied their own record for most 30 point-games in a season with eight, but another weakness Rex Ryan's team revealed in January was the lack of a play-making third-receiver for the Patriots.

But in a game day situation, when you're up against a strong opponent, you don't want to give an opponent weaknesses like that to exploit, regardless of how the statistics average out over the previous 16 games.

I don't know who or whether Belichick is going to bring someone in or not but I'm really hoping we see a major improvement in performance in the deep game

Antonio Cromartie is the anti-deep threat. Pats need an intermediate threat opposite Branch more than a deep one.

I'm starting to think crowell is on PFF's payroll.

Define intermediate threat. Gronkowski and Hernandez can provide that intermediate threat for me. Someone like a Malcom Floyd (whose proven he can play as the one, the two or the three receiver and with a magnificent tight end) can provide the open field threat for the Patriots.

The issue is, can we sign 1. someone who can play as a reliable 3rd receiver and 2. is there any available? A lot of this is dependent upon your importance placed on the tight ends.

Roth is GARBAGE.

I am AMAZED at how many are interested in him.

Intermediate = the 12-15 yard route tree

Dig, comeback, curl, deep out. Think Deion Branch for the Pats, or someone like Chad Johnson or Derrick Mason as an addition. I think Roddy White is the best example league-wide.

Floyd is a deep threat who lacks the foot quickness to run the routes I want.

Roth has short arms...Mike Ruth was worse but it's the same leverage problem

Yah, penguin arms were always a problem for me playing hoops

The Patriots need a wide receiver to do the job that the tight ends can do? Hernandez showed that he could specifically do that in 2010. I'd also think Branch can do that (as he's proven), Welker can do that and a that a more reliable deep threat is more important to compliment what we already have.

Hernandez caught 6 passes between 11 and 20 yards down the field. I think it's safe to say that he showed little to no ability to run the 12-15 yard routes. Even less so when accounting for catches out of the middle of the field (which is the other qualifier that I think I forgot to mention).

Yes, Branch can do that. 16 of his 61 receptions were in the 11-20 yard range, all from out wide at WR. And this was in 11 games. Prorated, that's 23 in a 16-game season, which would've been easily the best on the team.

Welker had 10 catches in the 11-20 range. Nope, not good enough.

This is Chad Johnson's forte, though. He had 26 last year, 35 the year before, and an obscene 45 in 2007.

I disagree. Not being asked to do something on a regular basis doesn't necessarily mean you can't do it. Welker's 2 years removed from reconstructive knee surgery and I expect his case of the fumbles to evaporate. Not that Chad doesn't provide the actions that you're asking for, it's more the belief that I harbor slim hope for Tate amounting to anything and can see where BB appears headed with the offense.

I'd rather find a reliable deep threat to compliment the tight ends and keep defenses honest given the apparent trend towards tight end sets and more of a running game given the positions drafted.

Not this **** again!

I thought I was reading a thread on LBs. Nice hijack taking me off into WR discussion.

Can't you start your own thread if you wanted to do that? ;)

I'm not a "Stretch the field" guy, but i agree with joesixpat that the patriots need a receiver who can beat single coverage and go long sometimes.

It's a copy cat league and everyone will be clogging the middle and disrupting crossing routes.

The young deion was enough, or David Patten, you don't need Randy Moss. More dynamic options at running back will help, but the Jets did expose a weakness. Not a huge one, but some key personnel and adjustments are required.
