Ravens cut Heap and a few others

Re: Real football news hits the web, from Adam Schefter

I worry more about the Ravens improving via FA than the Jets. Sad to say we lost to the Jets because we were out-coached, not beaten by superior on field athletic talent.

to clear 18.6 of cap space

Ravens release Mason, Heap, McGahee, Gregg

Ravens informed WR Derrick Mason, TE Todd Heap, RB Willis McGahee, and NT Kelly Gregg of their release.
Combined, the moves save $18.6 million in base salary, and all four cuts clear significant room under the salary cap. The flurry of salary slashes makes us wonder if Baltimore is gearing up for a run at free agent Nnamdi Asomugha, who could not only shore up the Ravens' secondary, but serve as an excellent mentor to first-round pick Jimmy Smith. Mason, 37, caught 61 passes for 802 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He still has value as a possession-slot type receiver, but the Ravens already had too many of those.

I LIKE HEAP big loss

I bet they resign most of this guys to better deals

They'll definitely re-sign Heap and Mason.

Mason and Gregg would be nice additions to the Pats. Mason is not strictly a possession receiver.

Do not want Mason. He's a Peyton-lover.

More importantly, he's an idiot who didn't want to come to New England. If he's seen the light, great. If not. . . .

One other thing: I would have been a lot more excited about Todd Heap being released 12 months ago. Now, meh. What a difference a GRONKnandez makes. :D

I just hope that BB doesn't know where you live ;)

McGahee is one of the most classless individuals in football.

...and he looks like a bag of smashed apples.

But only one of those teams we play twice per year. I don't even think we play the Ravens this season, unless post-season.

Doesn't Mason retire every offseason and then come back during TC? He's a lot like Favre without the media attention.

Anyone know how much more money the Ravens would have saved if they had cut these guys on March 11th? Looking for contract info for all of them now.

EDIT:

Just going off of this, for Heap (http://bal.scout.com/2/390086.html) it looks like Baltimore saves $4.6 million by cutting him, and missed out on an additional $1.83 million that they could have saved by cutting him in March. And that's just on one guy.

Can't find info on the others at the moment, but it looks like the Ravens are getting screwed by the dead cap amnesty, too.

I'd love to see Kelly Gregg signed.. He could play the nose and bump Wilfork to RDE.. And that makes the whole defense better..

Only Tannenbaum got the March email from Goodell

Gregg would be a great signing for Buffalo.

The Ravens cut all those players because Ed Reid can't play CB and S. They want Nnamdi, Nnamdi, Nnamdi!

If their large 2010 2nd rounder is ready to play this year, dumping Gregg & Co. to add Nnamdi would make that defense a big pain in the ass to play against.

They lost out on almost $2 million by not cutting Heap a few months ago, and back in March Ozzie Newsome said he wasn't going to cut McGahee and his $6M backup salary just yet because it was impossible to know what the labor landscape would look like going forward. Clearly, the Ravens didn't get the memo either :p
