If the Jets get Nnamdi Asomugha

As stated here (With NFL lockout almost over, big questions must be answered - ESPN), Asomugha to the Jets is a dark horse possibility. You know Rex Ryan would love to pair him with Revis. Now, if that happens, how should the Pats approach the Jets on offense?

It would seem to me that Asomugha and Revis would pretty much lock down New England's best two WRs, whoever they are. That doesn't mean NE wouldn't be able to throw, however. But what should be the Pats' approach?

I would love to see the Jets go crazy on a pass defense only to have the Patriots come at them with 2 TE, their best blocking WR, and just hammer them mercilessly on the ground. Then use Gronk, Hernandez, Vereen, and Woodhead out of play action, matched up against linebackers.

Considering all the posts on here about the Jets dire cap situation I don't see it happening.

If it did I would certainly look to run a lot of 2 TE sets. Establish the run and target Crump and Hernandez with a few extra throws.

Yeah, they had a hard enough time just being able to sign Revis last yr. If anything, I believe they'd look to re-sign Cromartie or someone in that caliber/range at a much, much cheaper rate.

I think it's about 50/50 Cromartie will actually walk though, just due to his selfishness. I think Brad Smith and one of Edwards/Holmes walks too.

At the end of the day, I think that the NYJ main priority will be to try and retain some of B.Smith, Cromartie, Holmes, and Edwards. I'm guessing they keep 2 of the 4, and the team doesn't even change that much. I'd love to see Holmes leave though, and Cromartie would be my #2 choice.

This is a nutty thread. There are several teams WAY below the cap (none of them being the over the cap Jets with key players still not included) who could meet A's $ needs without cuting several key players to meet the cap.

That's one big if. That GM doesn't spend big too often. When was the last big free agent signing they made? Lito Shepard? Cromartie and Holmes were for bargains. And too many teams are interested in the player. And too many teams need to spend some cash just to make the cap floor.

FWIW, Peter King says that he believes Asomugha wants to play for the Jets and a supposive Jets insider on Jetsinsider.com (the people on that board feel he is legit) says that Rex Ryan and Asomugha have been talking and he is willing to take less to go to the Jets. He says that barring a ridiculous, can't pass up offer; Asomugha will sign with the Jets. I tend to be skeptical of posters who claim they have inside sources, but I figured I would pass it along.

Personally, I think signing Asomugha might be a blessing in disguise. That would be Holmes would be gone. That means the Jets are going to have to hold opponents under 10 points almost every game. Sanchez was more lucky than good much of the season and Holmes had the game winning play in the fourth quarter or overtime in something like four of his first six games with the Jets. The Jets had a lot of games where their offense was horrible for three or three and a half quarters and then scored points in bunches which they won't be able to do without a top WR opposite Braylon Edwards.

There's just this little matter of the Jets being $1.3-million over the cap before they start whittling away at it to get in line with the league's $120.4-million, fairly hard cap. (You can go over the cap in one year by $3-million for one player.)

As Rich Cimini astutely pointed out the other day on his Jets blog, they could restructure Mark Sanchez and Darrelle Revis (due to count a total of $27.8 million against the cap this year), and they could take linebacker David Harris' franchise number of $10.4 million this year and lower it by converting it into the first year of a long-term contract. Remember, Santonio Holmes is a priority to sign, so assume that would take about $7 million this year. The Jets would probably have to cut two or three vets and not re-sign Antonio Cromartie to have any chance of getting into Asomugha's financial league -- even if it means Asomugha would take significantly less to go to New Jersey than, say, to Dallas or Houston.

He did overpay for Bart Scott and Calvin Pace.

Not sure how accurate anything is over on the JETSCAP page since his cap figures are certainly not close to accurate. But he has them with just 51 players under contract not including their rookies. He has almost 30 players making the about to be increased minimum salary. Lots of PSers and futures players in their top 51... Training camp rosters will expand to 90... They have 3-6 of their own FA that are crucial to sign or replace. They can restructure Sanchez deal and a few others to create space, but there are limits as to how much space you can create with that kind of roster...let alone in this compressed atmosphere.

To get Nmadi, they will likely have to cut either Calvin Pace or Bryan Thomas or both. Their OLBs were mediocre last year and one of their best OLBs last year is already gone in Jason Taylor.

The Jets haven't shown they have a consistent running game and that Shonn Greene can be the fulltime primary back. Sanchez led the league in dropped INTs last year and he can't be lucky like that every year. As I pointed out already, Holmes was a key component of the Jets pulling victory out of the jaws of defeat in a lot of games last year in a lot of last second wins last year.

In theory, having the two best CBs in the league is a huge advantage. In practice, it might not be the case. The Jets have a lot holes right now and to not be able to address those holes and create more holes to overstock one position, could be a huge mistake. Only time will tell.

Personally, I think it is all talk because I think Houston, Philly, Dallas, or Washington are going to give him a deal that he can't refuse.
