I don't know if I would really characterize one final sentence of a 400 word column as taking a shot at Borges; if anything Florio is simply stating the obvious (though 99% of those outside the Boston area probably have no clue as to what Florio is talking about with that comment); Borges is unabashedly pro-union if anybody hadn't figured that out yet.

The fact Florio specifically mentions Borges in his article leads me to believe that Borges is not only the most pro-union/anti-owner sports writer in New England, he apparently holds that title throughout all of North America.

We should all know that by now, if we've bothered to read what he writes - though most don't pay any attention to Borges because he doesn't like Belichick (it's primarily because BB traded away his pipeline for inside information: Drew Bledsoe. It also has to do with player/union vs management stances; Borges wants vets to be paid or even overpaid; BB doesn't subscribe to that economic philosophy).


Some writer somewhere is going to be the pro-owner extremist, and some writer somewhere is going to be the pro-players extremist; Borges just happens to be the latter. It's not exactly breaking news. Realize that going in if you read his articles and you'll be fine, much like understanding that Fox and NBC are going to offer differing views on politics. If you don't care to read his articles that's fine too; but to me the more various opinions the better - as long as you realize there is probably an angle being worked.

If I recall correctly Florio ripped Borges for a scoop that he had that turned out to be a conversation he heard while he was in a bathroom stall. I think it was at the owner's meetings, something about owners preparing/planning for the lockout.

Bogus just twisted the truth on sports central, he said that the owners want the players to recertify right away in a few days but when they were talking about decertifying at the beginning of this lockout business the owners said you cant do it that fast, but now the owners say they can do it fast, like the owners were lying before. The reason the owners said they couldnt do it that fast before was because of the 6 month provision in the CBA, not because of logistics, he's such an ass

He still wields influence - he's the gd HOF ballot holder for the Boston market after all and survived a plagerism scandal that caused the Globe to reluctantly part company with him. But also because they all know he's unstable and capable of tearing you a new one with a vengance if you land on his **** list (like BB) or beating you with a cane even if your disabled... He is also sadly the best pure "writer" of the lot and well connected in league and player circles among the malcontent factions so he has access albeit agenda driven.

Hate to say it, but I agree. His writing style is terrific and even if you hate him, his articles - especially when he does take the time to analyze and breakdown games - read extremely well and are generally pretty interesting. I remember the plaguirism scandal, and he simply got caught being lazy and complacent, which is too bad because that was quite a black mark for a guy who as Mo pointed out is still pretty influential.

I disagree with his opinions and wish he could remove some of the bias and agenda from his content, but purely as a writer he's great at what he does. I started reading his "On Football" columns with the Globe back during the Pete Carroll era and they were generally pretty good, especially after a loss where he wasn't afraid to call it the way he saw it. Although that part really hasn't changed...there's just a bit more sarcasm and snide remarks from him in them now

When Booby chose Chris Can'tHe with his very first pick in his very first draft (1997), Bogus presciently described him as a "slow dwarf" with character issues, while postulating that asking Booby about Sam Madison might've been no more productive than asking him about James Madison.

And his writing for the Glob after the Tyson-Holyfield fights were excellent. Too bad his negative personality traits have completely overwhelmed him during the past decade.

I used to love reading Ron Borges. Indeed, the Pravda's Sports Section was, for many years, a greatly anticipated daily ritual, especially on Sunday mornings, of course. What an amazing lineup they had, back in the day:

BasketBall ~ Bob Ryan

There were others, of course.

Thanks for the link, OTG. What a great story about the greatest time to read the sports pages, ever.

During the mid-late 70s, I sold the Herald & the Evening Globe, incl. at 5pm the Closing Stocks edition, in front of various buildings in downtown Boston's Financial District. Shortly after I started at 3pm, I would sit down & read the sports sections, forwards & backwards. I could replay the previous night's games in my mind through the words of Gammons, Ryan, Rosa, McDonough, Collins, Montville, Powers, et. al. Before cable television arrived, these writers were our SportsCenter.

What a shame that such creatures as Wrong Bogus & John TonAsse have soiled the memories of those of us who can recall when we could read the sports without having to hold our noses. But to these two, plagiarism is tempoary; publicity is forever.
