Space to discuss current status of the CBA as it inches toward completion.

A real shame that the players were not able to vote on it yesterday, after months to prepare. Let's hope they do today. One more signal that they are in no hurry to get back on the field. Each day it's open creates an opportunity for one more request, one more complication.

As Kevin Mawae clearly stated: "Our timeline is that which gives us the best deal for the players." Which should be his position, of course.

Today could still be the day both sides start to approve the process.

Presumably, if the player review drags long enough to miss a preseason week, league revenues will be lower and the cap will have to be adjusted.

Sounds like the owners are really pushing for it to be done, while the players want some last items discussed. Lucky for the players, they're drawing the ire of pretty much everyone else (myself included).

Contrary what Chester Pitts says, the deal will be done by this weekend. The players can't hold up the process going after things that easily spun to be greedy (special consideration for plantiffs, $320 million in benefits "lost" last year). All they can do is play a game of chicken with the owners and see if they blink first. Maybe the owners will give concessions if they think the players will delay the start of the football year by a week or two. Or maybe the owners will think the players are bluffing and call them on their bluff and then the players will likely back down. It's all a last minute powerplay IMHO and it will be all over by this weekend.

I think push is coming to shove as the owners apparently play to vote on a settlement and CBA by 5:30 today whether the players are ready to settle or not and then kick the ball back into their court with the caveat that they will start losing $35M per day off the deal once delays start impacting the pre season schedule...and that will take about a million a day off each teams cap. Take it or leave it time.

It seems reasonable to reduce the 2011 cap by $7M for each pre-season game missed. I suspect that many of the 20 teams that are $10M or more under might welcome such a result.

I don't get it. Don't contracted players have their salaries amortized proportionately even including something for pre-season? If so any cap reduction is met by an expense reduction and it's a wash in a 1st order analysis.

For those under contract, sort of - although maybe they get asked to restructure... Less money for FA and everyone else if the cap shrinks...

It won't wash. If the cap is $113M instead of $120M, teams will have $7M less of cap money to spend. Yes, the players already signed will be in the best shape, although the new cap might one or two to be cut or be foreced to restructure. The primary effect will be on free agents. If no one else were cut or restructured, their pay would be decreased by $225M. Considering that the cuts or restructures could happen anyway, the real reduction could be the full $225M.

The owners won't gain since they will lose the revenues from the lost preseason game. In this scenario, it is a simple decision for the players. Thewy can decide how much to reduce the pay of the free agents and perhaps risk being cut to save cap money.

Smith's tone and attitude definitely were a surprise to me. The past few weeks all we saw was him going into and out of meetings with owners, meetings where all this progress was made. But I guess grandstanding and blowy rhetoric are part of the process right now.

We don't have the details but, according to most of the reports, the player percentage of the pie is dropping to between 46.5%-48% of the pie, when they'd previously been getting from about 50+% to 53%. My rounding was approximate, so that part could be off a bit, but the drop is significant.

Recertification shouldn't hold up the CBA.....That can be done electronically and shouldn't hold anything up according to what I read somewhere....

Lets see if the players can get their act together and get back to TC by the next week at the latest.....Pats usually open TC around July 27th or so I believe....

Plus they could basically open up business and the camps and re-certify in the first few days of business.

This has got to be a good sign.
