Will New 'Rules' Lead to a New Deal For Mankins?
By: Ian Logue

Now that the new guidelines for a new CBA are close to being in place, it's going to be interesting to see if something can once again be worked out in order to keep Logan Mankins here in New England....

Nice article. I love Bauer's repeated use of the word travesty to describe the patriots only paying him $10 million dollars this year.

ten million dollars is a travesty? Are these guys out of touch with reality or what?

Its a travesty that the Patriots aren't giving ME free tickets for life...for being such a loyal fan all these years...a TRAVESTY I say!!!:enranged:

Your point is even more credible when you consider the Pats long-term offer last year, of what? Approximately 8 million per? Since that would have likely made him the 2nd highest paid guard in the NFL, I certainly agree that 'travesty' is a very deep stretch.

We all appreciate the hard work and punishment that Logan takes, and I certainly hope that he stays, but when you turn down 500k per game, and are currently "undecided" on the 625k per game (approx.franchise numbers), you are not being treated that unfairly.

I just wish that they'd just actually cave a little bit this time, as it seemed that last yr they were reasonably close to what he wanted. I don't know if it's more per yr, another added yr to the deal, or a larger guaranteed amount, but at this point I hope it gets done. I'm tired of hearing about his 'travesty.'

I would sure as hell find a $625,000/week acceptable income. Even if it is only for 1/3 of the year. It takes most people 6-7 years to make what these guys pull in a week.

When I consider the fact that I will have at least 5-6 years of college education by the springtime, and my salary "ceiling" will be 50-60k per year (minus obvious college loans that have been gaining interest, and will continue to do so for the next 15 yrs), I realize that I should NOT have gone to school. I should have spent all day with a tackling dummy, swilling down protein shakes, and hitting the weights.

It will take me a minimum of 12-15 years (basically TWICE as long as your projection) to make what he is slated to make in one lousy game...Now THAT'S a travesty..

Geez dude, not sure what you went to college for but I know lawn mowers that make that kind of money. No loans needed. If you "followed your heart" into a low-paying job go punch your guidance councilor in the head please! Sooner or later you will hate it, you might as well get paid well. Mankins is an elite athlete, chances are you werent picked first in gym class so its time you get over it.

Actually I did just fine in multiple sports, including football--as irrelevant as that is.

And if you know 'lawn mowers' that make 60k a year (what my fiancee's base salary is who is a doctor--before bonuses, which takes her to 90k) you know some pretty serious lawn care specialists.

And I have 3 degrees, a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice (Crime Scene specialtist) paired with 2 Associate's in Computer Forensics, and another in Computer Networking and small systems technology. It has nothing to do with my 'guidance counselor,' that is what the average salaries are in those fields....I had interviews with the CIA, it's not my field that is the problem, it's that college educated people like myself who can actually solve problems that help the world go 'round won't see money like that in 10 yrs time, let alone the 'week' that is such a TRAVESTY.

I have nothing to 'get over,' most people feel the same way, as you can see by the comments...It's you who is living in a fantasy world.

And if 'lawn mowers' are grossing 1500 a week (the amount needed to net 60k a year), that means they are making 300 a day, which amounts to almost 40 dollars an hour.

Last time I checked, when you make 40 dollars an hour, you are doing pretty well for yourself. I'm not sure what world you're living in, but I don't know too many uneducated people who are lucky enough to see 40 dollars an hour.

Especially when the annual average family income is around 30--35,000, or roughly 1/2 of that. Having a college education allows you to make 2x the average American income, that seems like it's still the right choice to me. Just the thought that you would consider blaming someone else for a 40 dollar an hour career, by "punching the guidance counselor in the face" shows your overall intelligence.

Oh, and by the way, I decided to look up 'lawn care/lawn mower' and the average yearly and hourly salary.

For the record, it's about 25,430 a year, and 12.23 an hour---definitely a far cry from the "60,000" a year that you are speaking of, which makes a lot of sense. Your argument is one of the biggest ultimate fails I have seen from you, since most of your actual football related posts.

I hope they can come to terms but I'm not holding my breath. The cap is going down, not up, as it has been reset at less than what the adjusted cap was two years ago in the last capped season. The team was offering him a deal that averaged closer to $6.5M per his agent, $7M+ in new money. He seemed to be dug in on averages and wanted something that topped $8M. They do genuinely seem to want him but not at any cost. They will have 30 days or so to get a long term deal done with him under the tag before that window closes (to sign tagged players to long term deals). The next time it opens he will have turned 30. The LT he's played his pro career to date with has one foot out the door here and possibly career wise at 33.

Two key factors that will impact negotiations are whether or not as a named plaintiff he gets an exemption from the tag in future and whether or not the tag itself will be recalculated if as reported the owners pushed for and got a split of OL by position for tender purposes into OT/OG/C under the new CBA. Knowing how Logan over reacts to perceived insults I could imagine recalculation of his tag leading to another ego driven public temper tantrum... And when you frame your demands as he has that ultimately reflects not principle but ego.

No matter how special you are saying we want to sign you and keep you here doesn't mean we promise to give you whatever it is you think you deserve even if you are the very best player at your position. Just ask Brady. The most recent deal he signed averaged out to be a few dollars more than the incomparable Eli Manning...and is one that Eli's brother will trump shortly by all measures and Drew Brees may also trump. When anyone in their right mind knows Brady should lead the pack at this juncture. And here Logan isn't merely competing with other LG's, he's competing with a future LT and a RT and a NT and an ILB at equally if not historically more significant positions who are his teamates. So his status amongst LG's league wide isn't the only pecking order he needs to be slotted into.

That other teams will overpay or pay a premium has never meant this team will. They are in fine shape cap and cash and roster wise even amid chaos for a reason. Their adherence to a disciplined, rational approach to teambuilding and the persuit of value. The other being Brady's continued willingness to work within their system...including financially.

That was funny ...LOL

on the other hand, if you are making $625,000/week, and the guy in the next cubicle, who is not half as good as you, is making $900,000/week, you would be wondering what the hell happened.

we need to sign Mankins.

Here'e hoping the Pats sign Mankins. They need him on that O-line and I think he does want to be here.
As the saying goes....."JUST DO IT!!!!"

I definitely agree that signing Mankins would be a wonderful thing. I am interested to see where this most recent news regarding the plaintiff deal will take us, as he may be a FA right off of the bat--franchise tag be damned!

As far as your comparison to the person who isn't 1/2 as good as he is making a lot more money, I'm not sure that is actually true, as he turned down a deal that was pretty much right there with the highest paid guard in the game. Mankins would have undoubtedly have been the 2nd highest paid player in the NFL at his position, and awfully close to the 1st.

It isn't the NEP fault that N.Orleans overpaid for their guard so terribly. You don't see guys like Brady/Welker complaining that other players who aren't as good make more than them (in the past/future in TFB's case).

There's a point when you will have so much money that your children, and their children should be pretty well taken care of. Money is not 'everything' as the saying goes. I could agree if Mankins' offered salary was a comparable joke, but that's not the case at all. If another 1/2 million per yr is 'that' important to him, let him go and play for the Cleveland Browns and never sniff the playoffs or any success again.

Can"t we all just get a lawn?

We could all get along very easily if some guys like that poster didn't always have such negative things to say about the team, anything he doesn't agree with, and life in general.

Arguing the point that my choosing a college education and a comfortable career, instead of just choosing no education-- so that I could 'mow lawns' and exceed a 60,000 salary by doing so, is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
