If Light goes out, bright talent steps in - The Boston Globe

Like some have said here, the Matt Light ship has already sailed in NE unless he does a 180 regarding his contract.

But, with approximately 7 weeks to go before the 2011 season, I think Vollmer will be playing LT unless Solder is just a phenom. Solder to RT.

Just my opinion of course, but I am not so sure that Solder plays from day one, even at RT. I think that he will have to be blended in just like any other rookie, due to the labor situation.

Belichick is not afraid to make any move that is best for the team, and I somehow doubt that he sees putting a totally green and raw rookie in on the line to protect Brady from day one as 'what's best for the team.'

Light's gone in my opinion. It will now depend on Kaczur and his situation/and even possibly Mark LeVoir--who has shown that he can fill in without too much downfall.

I agree that Vollmer would be the one to take over LT, and that BB would simply plug in either of Kaczur or LeVoir at RT. But I don't see Nate Solder starting anywhere on the line from day one, and that is just fine. He is a long term investment, and part of the future on the line, but that does not mean that Bill is 'forced' to have to start him as raw as he is, especially considering this yr's offseason circumstances.

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

Interesting that the AFC execs saw Mallet 'as having a little bit of baby fat' on him, yet we just had a long discussion here about how he looked thin.

I think that what being 6'7" does for you, although I do agree that he will need some strength training. I bet he's still at 240 easily, he just looks thin at that height (to some).

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

Fans do tend to pick and choose. Light reportedly received what the team deemed a fair offer which he refused. Doesn't mean he or they won't reconsider post lockout for a number of reasons. I agree the team won't extend itself if he has suitors willing to overpay in dollars or years. And the scouts seem to think Solder can start but fans who read early draft pundit assessments now can't fathom that...

Vollmer was a rookie. The thing that might hurt for 1st 3 weeks is no Training camps. I have faith Solder can handle his position. We offered Light a fair deal obviously he doesn't want to ride the bench.

Let him sign elsewhere I did not think we would resign him anyways

Nate Solder - T - Patriots

The Boston Globe has spoken with four NFL college scouting directors that all believe first-round pick Nate Solder could start at left tackle from the get-go in 2011.
There's a very good chance free agent Matt Light will be allowed to depart, which would give New England no choice but to make Solder its blindside protector. For a team where anything less than Super Bowl title is a disappointment, that's a risky proposition.

They've cancelled Training camps??

All he's missed was 14 odd OTA's. He's been here working with the local group Mayo organized, as oddly has Light. And it wouldn't surprise me if Mankins hasn't been part of that group too since as mad as he was last season he never left the Forboro area code...

We know the team has reconsidered in the past: BB actually did decide to give Vinatraitor what he was looking for, but a little too late.

Apparently Rotoworld has never heard of the concept of a "swing tackle." :snob:

the Patriots made what they deemed to be a fair offer to Light before the lockout started.

lol

Of course they are unbiased.

Considering Belichick throws around nickels like they were manhole covers, saying the team made a fair offer is the same as saying, we wrote exactly what the team wanted us to instead of investigating.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of paying Light big money at this point in his career, but the team has likely never made an offer big enough to be denominated in US currency, including pennies, that they did not deem fair.

It would be nice to see the first headline whereby the team announces they have made an unfair offer and can't understand why the player didn't accept it.:D

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

hopefully the CBA is finalized in next few days so they can get to camp. :)

Solder will be ready for game 1:cool:

We've put rookie tackles out there before. I think Solder will be the day one starter at LT and Vollmer at RT. Light will be gone.

I still don't understand why you continue to make the premise that there is no way that Solder can start at the start of this season. There is just too much evidence that that is not going to be the case.

1. The personnel executive who stated he was the most pro ready OT in the draft, which is CLEARLY what BB thought when he picked him over guys like Costanzo and Cabrini.

2. I chuckle at the constant references about his lack of strength. He is now into his 5th month of dedicated strength training since his so called poor performance at the combine (which was, btw, remarkably similar to the strength numbers put up by Mankins and Light) He certainly isn't where he will end up, but he is MUCH stronger than when he was in Feb

3. As to being ready, Solder is going from being coached by a bad program in Colorado, to one of the top OL coaches in the the NFL. Dante has gotten players like a rookie Matt Light and a jag GRR to be superbowl starting OTs, getting guys like LeVoir and Kazcur ready to start at LT in the NFL, and transforming Volmer from a "drastic reach" to an OT that is about a year away from pro bowl status.

Solder could be the most physically gifted OLman Dante has ever coached. He seems to have a great attitude, and WANTS to be good. Why is it that so many fans think that some how Dante will NOT be able to get this kid ready to play early on????!!!! Is this the year, Dante suddenly forgets how to coach?

4. The whole "lockout will keep rookies from being impact players" dirge is a red herring. Think about it. Aside from being in a team organized off season weight program, what have they missed thus far. 5 or 6 OTA practices? Believe me they ALL have the play book. They all have heard the terminology at the BC practices. They ALL have had the ability to work this off season with personal strength coaches

5. The more I think on it the more it seems Light is a goner. There are simply too many teams out there who could use a guy like Light and have the money to overpay and still have it make sense. The Atlanta situation is a perfect example. KC has money to burn...and will have to make the increased salary FLOOR that is coming. Plus as to moving his family, a lot of guys "commute" and have their families not in the city they play in. And as to him losing off season and after football opportunities in NE, Light can easily spend the next 2 or 3 years elsewhere and come back to NE and still be a lifetime Patriot just like Law, Vrabel, etc.

Sure it hasn't been ideal, but to think that missing 5 or 6 OTAs means rookies won't be able to contribute is ridiculous. Just ask Jermaine Cunningham who missed over THREE WEEKS of actual TC and still managed to contribute from the first week.

Granted after this "compelling" defense of Solder as a starter, he might very well not be our opening day starter at LT. It could happen. I just don't think so. JMHO.

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

Yah, what precisely was the Patriots so-called "fair offer"? It looks like KC, Tamper and a handful of others are so far under the cap that SOME FAs will get big quickie contracts but many teams will be up against it. KC could be a rest home for Light protecting the Cassell. If not, perhaps something could still be worked out with the Pats if Light is still standing there after a few days of FA.

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

First, because the Pats considered it fair, it doesn't mean Light did.

Second, very few players signed deals before the lockout. Many didn't because they felt that maybe they might get a better deal post lockout with free agency looming.

In a normal off season, I doubt that Light would have accepted an offer prior to free agency. I do believe his first choice is to stay here and might even take a hometown discount, but I doubt he would take an offer from the Pats (which most likely would be modest and short term) with there being a chance that someone might grossly overpay because they are desperate for a LT and that is their missing piece for a Super Bowl run.

Keep in mind Vollmer got 7 votes for tackle on the AP All-Pro team (he made second team).

And remember how that works: each voter gets two votes for tackle, total, left or right. So 7 voters either felt that (A) they wanted one left tackle and one right tackle, and felt Vollmer was the best RT in the game, or (B) felt that Vollmer was one of the two best tackles in football last year.

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

This will likely be his last major contract in the NFL. I can't blame him for not taking the Patriots' offer. Other teams should value him more and make significantly better offers. No surprises here.

I guess this means that the whole cutting Kaczur thing is history then? He probably still won't restructure.

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

What's a "fair" offer from Kraft? A nickel, a free shoe shine, and a parking space down at Jonathan City??????

It's BB! Who knows! :D

Not when you bias the decision with 'totally green and raw' left alone on an island, no.

But what if you said, BB will put the best offensive line combo on the field? The season isn't starting in July, it is starting in September, and there is plenty of time to find the the best combo. If the best combo of tackles could be Solder and Vollmer, then that is what is best for the team.

Solder isn't nearly as raw as Vollmer was when Vollmer played LT. BB gave him steady help with a TE next to him.

We will see.

Re: Light recieved a fair offer which he refused

Solder is more than capable of starting at LT. All he needs is a little more upper body strength for run blocking, but his pass blocking is more than adequate at this point.
