James Sanders - DB - Patriots

The Boston Globe suggests that Patriots S James Sanders "could garner some interest on the trade market" after the lockout.
The Pats could go forward with Brandon Meriweather, Pat Chung, Jarrad Page, and a special teamer as their safeties. Sanders, 27, is due a $2.8 million base salary. A nine-game starter last season, Sanders intercepted three passes including a pick-six and also had a forced fumble. However, Pro Football Focus graded Sanders as a poor run defender and below-average cover man. It's hard to imagine the Pats getting more than a late-round pick for him.

I like this proposed move.:):)

we look SOLID at DB and a move like this could net us that extra ST guy on the roster. Maybe a Lee Smith type I keed I keed, but hopehe could crack it

Every instance of pure mediot speculation doesn't require a thread, let alone from you.

We all thought the same thing last year too. Perhaps if the right deal came along, but idk... I'll bet against it.

Let's not forget that last year we went into TC with 4 quality safeties with Chung, Meriweather, Sanders, and McGowan. We all speculated that Sanders could be traded because we already had 3 other quality safeties besides him. But then McGowan got hurt. One would have thought that we would have been content with what we had with the remaining three; but BB saw the need to have 4 quality players and traded for Jarrad Page.

As for interest on the market, I don't know if much is there. Sanders was a free agent at one point, and teams were hardly clamoring for his services. I think we value him more here than others teams would on their teams.

I would hate to see him go for some reason.

I would much rather see Merriweather go. He would garner a much higher return, being that he is younger, has better stats, and made 2 Pro-Bowls. I could see him going for a second round, maybe even a first to a really dumb GM (ie: Al Davis). Or maybe in one of those rare player for player deals.

what is wrong w/ speculation threads from reports? What else is there to talk about? The CBA crap is boring and why not post something unCBA like?

Chill pill Mo chill chill chill:cool:

So, we currently have three solid safeties in Meriweather, Chung, and Sanders. Then we have three question marks in Page (limited sample size), McGowan (health and maybe not signed? can't remember), and Brown (ST youth). As a team that employs as many three-safety sets as we do, I don't think it's wise to trade one of the three safeties we have confidence in. Even though many of the 3-S sets were due to lack of depth at CB, I still think that is a short sighted move.

Sanders was in on something like 70% of the snaps last year. If we trade him, one injury to Chung or Meriweather and suddenly we're starting Jarrad Page full time. I'm not comfortable with that right now.

Sanders has more value to us than any other team - he's a steadying force in our safety rotation. But he's borderline worth his contract as it is - if anything, he could be restructured, even cut if we had to (looks like we don't). But traded? Don't see it.

BB I see him looking at RAS as a potential safety... just saying

I was thinking about this, and it actually makes a TON of sense for the Pats to go after a high-end free agent safety, along the likes of Eric Weddle, Quintin Mikell, or Michael Huff. One of those along with Chung are solid starters, and Page or McGowan or somebody can be signed to be a solid #3. That gives the Pats the flexibility to trade both Sanders and Meriweather, getting a few picks (3rd and 6th total?) while clearing about $3.9M in cap space, which would just about cover the FA safety's first year's cap hit.

I've heard this from a lot of people on here... but not once from anyone actually affiliated with the organization. Until we start seeing him take snaps in training camp, this is baseless speculation.

And even assuming that is the case, Meriweather as a higher pick than Ras didn't get significant playing time his rookie year until late in the season, and he played safety in college with a FULL training camp. So now we're going to trade Sanders on the premise that Ras can convert positions and learn the defense in time to help replace a player who ate up 70% of the snaps?

I can't get behind this move. If BB does it, I'll keep my mind open, but I just don't see it being a good idea.

Nothing against your speculation thread.

But you really think BB is giving up his third safety and replacing his spot with a 4th TE?

did u see the I keed I keed part? He could be a valuable ST blocker who knows? I am FOR signing a FA safety and collecting a pick like a 2 or 3. That we would get for Merri

Lee could crack roster as a LS if he really works at it. It would protect Lee's spot in the FUTURE years. I am soooo surprised how those small LS don't get hurt by the BIG DL-men. It is a moot point, but I would think that those small guys would get run the **** over.

Are you serious?

The only good thing Merriweather does is hit hard - when he actually has a good angle on the player. Otherwise, he gambles - and loses - too much for my liking. Plus, I think he's a dolt. I'll never forget him saying he was doing his own thing out there - explaining his benching. Moron.

What Sanders lacks in talent, he makes up for in smarts. Still, he would be amongst the least physically talented of the bunch -well, except for Lockett.

However, with the speculated 120 cap - I can definitely see Sanders go, but to think you would get any value for him in a trade is pretty laughable. A fifth or sixth rounder - maybe.

As much as these "names" sound attractive, this limited preparation pre-season is NOT the time to knock 2 starter level safties out of the lineup. We've see learning curve "issues" before. One out of place safety and 7 pts go on the board.

I want to say that McGowan signed a two-year deal in 2009, which must have expired. I would think the Pats could bring him back with a 1 or 2-year prove-it deal. He didn't play last year so that creates that "out-of-sight out-of-mind" effect, which means we could probably sign him cheap and without a long commitment.
