Offensive UDFA's I'd Like to Bring In

1) It might seem odd but my first pick would be Pat Devlin, QB, Delaware. I'd do this because so many teams out there are in a crisis concerning QB's that it wouldn't surprise me if we were approached about trading Hoyer, Mallett or both. Just a feeling I have. (Plus, Devlin seems to be accurate enough, just needs some weight training to improve his long ball.)

2) Zach Hurd, OG, CT. The way he can move his feet, I believe he'd have some great success moving to Tackle. He'd be a very cheap replacement for Nick Kaczur and, like so many of the prospects that I like, he needs to hit the weight room.

3) Willie Smith, OT, E.Carolina. This is a player that has similar numbers to all the top Tackles that were drafted this year. From what I read, he could develop into a top notch Guard. He did 29 on the bench press, finally somebody who doesn't have to live in the weight room!

4) David Mims, OT, Virginia Union. Again, a player who's workout numbers are similar to the top Tackles. Down the road could be a nick backup G/T.

Michael Jasper - I know he was drafted by the Bills, I'm PRAYING they cut him for running a bad 40 time and we scoop him up, I'd be fine with trading for him, I think this guy has STUD potential.

Hey, I liked Devlin too but with Hoyer as the solid(~) backup and Mallett coming in I cant see us going from 2 to 4 QBs on the roster. Stashing a guy like that on our PS is kinda useless, he'd get poached in a minute. And I'm of the opinion that the last thing you want to do is further split reps with the backups. TB doesnt leave the field much, he even wants on during preseason. Competing rookies could hinder potential trade value of either too. Yes on the OL, but I dont see us with 4 QB in camp more than 2 weeks.

Personally, I'd be stunned if a top UDFA quarterback even considered the Patriots for a moment. Can you imagine a tougher QB roster to crack? You have a Hall of Fame starter with a long-term contract, an established backup who the team trusted enough last year to not carry a #3, a rookie draft pick with an arm better than most starters in the league, and a 2nd-year player returning from the team's practice squad. Surely that makes New England the last-choice destination for any FA QB.

For my two cents on offense I would concentrate on interior offensive line and WR. These players would be brought in for competition and to have a shot at the practice squad.

I think I'd remind the agent about Michael Lombardi on the NFL Network saying that if Hoyer has another good showing in the pre-season that a trade could very well be in the works because he said a few teams he talked to had already expressed interest.

If Mallett can throw another one of those 65 yard bombs like he did in practice the other day, I'd expect the phone to be ringing for him, too.

Learning from Tom Brady is not to be under rated, as was shown with Matt Cassel.

Mallett would be a bizarre story for sure! Can anybody remember a newly drafted rookie ever being traded away before his first season? Hard to imagine.

As for Hoyer, how could the Patriots possibly feel confident before camp that they'd be trading him? Given that they didn't even get a rookie minicamp to look at Mallett, they can't know what they have in the rookie at this point.

Not counting things like the Sheli/Rivers trade, I can't think of any off the top of my head, although there were rumors that a team made an offer for Myron Pryor before the Pats traded Seymour.

It was a very weird draft for centers. Only 5 were picked, and they included Bill Nagy (NFLDraftScout's 27th-ranked center) and Zack Williams (#10), while the prospects ranked #3, 6, 7, 8, 9 went undrafted. O'Dowd must have failed some physicals to be passed over.

As far as O'Dowd, he got pushed around at the second half of season and no injuries. - On M. Floyd, I would prefer to wait, probably Branch's last year and cannot think of anyone better to coach up Taylor Price.-Next year with Price ready and our TEs fully intergrated into the system, I would offer Larry Fitzgerald a blank check, if and only if we can dump some overpriced contracts.

To please the people who want to dump Mankins: Send Mankins and Kaczur to Dallas for a 1st round draft pick. There goes $13M. But we sure as heck better have a UDFA O Lineman or Marcus Cannon or both not only ready to play but capable as well.

This will please the most people on the site: Trade Meriweather. Take him add TBC and maybe even Butler if necessary. Send them to a team like MN that is in desperate need of S and OLB help. We only ask for a 2nd round pick.

If we can pull that off, we have more than enough money to pay Fitzgerald and then the people that hate Mankins and Meriweather will have to think of somebody else to pick on.

I apologize, I almost forgot about the Center position. I'm in agreement with most people that say it was a bad year for Centers and physically I believe Koppen's gone as far as he can go (Bless him for all he's done). I was reading about next year's draft prospects and when more than one site mentioned that Mike Brewster from Ohio State was the next Nick Mangold, I said, OK, I can wait.

In going over all the picks again, I've changed my mind about OT Mims and replaced him with Jarriel King, OT/G from South Carolina.

The more I think of it, I tend to agree that it probably will be too hard to bring Pat Devlin in. Good thinking, guys.
