OT: Speed up Firefox

This is something I came across that really speed up the Firefox browser, IF you have broadband:


1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

I think the "FasterFox" extension does the same stuff. That's what I use instead of doing it manually.

To return to the original OT... those on very slow computers or those who are marginal on RAM memory might be hurt rather than helped. Your computer will not be able to handle all those extra connections and will seem nonresponsive until they all load. And the initialpaint=0 setting will cause the screen to need to redraw as more of the page comes in, which is hardly noticeable on a fast computer but might actually delay things on a slow one.

But for most people these are good suggestions.

I use firetune. Gives you 5-6 different settings based on your computer speed/internet speed.

Speaking of FireFox, can anyone help with :

On FireFox I have lose the ability to have threads with unread posts bolded and those where I've read the last post not bolded.

It works fine on IE for me but I prefer FireFox.

It's happened before, I thought I had to clear the cache but that hasn't helped. So maybe it was something similar but different to that that I need to get that working again . . . does anyone know ?

Please note that you should not set your maximum requests to some incredibly high number, as many sites will ip block you if you put too much of a strain on their servers. 30 is probably the maximum you should go, and I would suggest a more reasonable number like 10.

If you use Fasterfox and don't have a very specific reason for having it, you should also disable precatching. Combined with pipelining that setting can make a website very unresponsive to others.

FireTune isn't an extension like FasterFox, just search Google for it and you'll find a place you can download it. What does it do ? Hell if I know, I assume some stuff that I'm not smart enough to know to do myself

Firefox has "saved" one of my computers. It got so screwed with viruses re Internet access that even my software engineer son couldn't fix it about the ninth time it got infected. So, he installed Firefox and it's back to normal. I still use Explorer once in great while for things Firefox doesn't seem to do, but Firefox seems impervious to viruses so far.
