Kris Jenkins as a backup NT: Worth the gamble?

Straightforward poll question to pass a little time.

Would cost too much, and the risk of paying for someone who will be out for the season in September is too high.
I would be really surprised to see him come back. I don't expect he has worked real hard on rehab this time around.

If we are looking at exJets, I'd have Shaun Ellis at the top of the list.

I voted no. His age, weight, and injury history are more than enough for me to steer clear. I'd rather give Brace and Love a chance to prove themselves.

I also agree that Shaun Ellis is a far more tantalizing option

Jenkins was a really disruptive presence....when he was on the field. He'd be worth a look for the right price. I don't know why you'd think he'd cost much, Andy. He has to know his value has crashed due his his injury history.

On the other hand Shaun Ellis is has been an excellent Dlman for many years. Nothing exceptional, but always very solid. Kind of like a Bobby Hamilton type. Now he might be more expensive.

While he'd be an upgrade short term, I think the long term value of the ability to keep a younger guy on the roster outweighs that. The Pats are already going to have to cut a few talented DL the way it is.

i say yes if he does not want to much, right now wilfork is the only true NT on the roster so i dont think he would be takeing anyones spot

Never going to happen.

First, he hates the the Pats. He is one of the players out there who thinks the Patriots stole his Super Bowl ring by cheating. When the Jets had a rally, he said he hates "cheaters".

Second, he already said he only wants to play for a team who plays on natural grass. If he was willing to play on an artificial surface, he would probably return to the Jets.

Third, the guy has torn two ACLs in two years (three for his career). He is done.

I believe its actually at least 4 ACL tears. I might be wrong but I thought he tore it in back to back seasons with the Panthers also.

On the surface you can see some value as it would allow us flexabilty to Use one of Wilfork or Jenkins at end on run downs. Jenkins would be better served playing a smaller role. But in the end he is old, injury prone, and plays a position that is the same as our best defender. We are better off finding an actual end which we may have in Stroud.

I know we are lacking a true NT behind Vince but we do have several DTs who could potential fill in with Brace topping that list IMO but also wright and Pryor. Truth is without Vince we might be pushed even further toward 4-3.

I think he ruptured a bicep one year. He did have back to back years of being placed on IR in Carolina like he did in NY, but unlike NY, his injuries in Carolina were not both ACL tears.

Subject to health clearance and cost, sign the beast. Yes we have young players but if Jenkins can be near what he was, he would be worth a small cap hit.
Then you would be able to move Big Vince around more- any team has to account for Vince or pay the price.

Jenkins wouldn't play for Pats unless he was going to get a good pay day...MONEY would be about the only thing that would change his mind about liking the Pats.....and It AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN !!

If he would sign a veteran minimum deal with incentives yes. However he won't and somebody will offer him a couple of million on the upside.

I don't see it happening but i still like the idea of using the two firsts from next year for Ngata. Ngata is a true impact player and with him the Patriots would have a DL that OL's would have absolute fits with, freeing up the LB's to get after the passer while also giving them a dominant run defense. The Patriots would still have plenty of ammo for the next draft despite the loss of the firsts and i think Ngata would do for the defense what Moss did for the offense. Additionally it would be a serious blow to the Ravens defense, and they don't have the offense that can carry a team, making their demise more likely.
