Driving home, I heard a sportscaster mention how Peyton Manning had not yet signed with the Colts. And how, he had off- season neck (nerve) surgery. So, how fortunate are we as Pats fans that Brady signed a 4 year extension last year instead of holding out for the jackpot. (as an aside what a jackpot that would have been as the reigning league MVP).

Imagine the state of these boards -- filled with predictions of gloom and doom should the Krafts fail to sign Brady. Imagine the range of advice being bestowed on the Krafts to do whatever was necessary to sign Brady. Imagine the rising blood pressure and mood of fans on this board on what would happen when the lockout ended. Imagine the endless media journalists (or should I more appropriately call them speculators or rumor-mongers a la Florio) who would have figuratively killed endless trees speculating on how San Francisco or Seattle or the Vikings would be willing to open up their coffers to tempt Brady or how they were willing to hand over their first round picks for the forseeable future to the Pats to trade him after signing him as a franchise-tagged player. Imagine if Brady was unsigned, how the cognoscenti would have dissected the Mallett pick in the third round as a sign that BB was signaling -- nay, pushing-- Brady out the door. Nothing BB could have said about how the Pats thought Mallett was the best player available would have stopped everyone from speculating and prognosticating endlessly.

Just imagine the above. And if you don't believe the tumult (excitement) that would have prevailed on these boards (and the increased traffic they would have generated), just go back and look at these boards last summer at a time when Brady was entering the final year. There were endless threads..... covering the issue from every angle.

Now imagine the Colts boards or the state of mind of Colts fans. I'm glad I'm not a Colts fan. As an aside, I should add that while Manning is a great QB, he has always held up the Colts for a King's ransom -- unlike Brady. And this year, he has the team where he wants them -- over a $ 24 million franchide tag guaranteed. Did you see their GM even threaten to draft a QB. Imagine what the Colts will be without a healthy Manning or post Manning. That is a one-horse team, more than most.

Just imagine.......and think how much we have to be thankful for.

Manning SHOULD be fine. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees. Even minor surgeries can go wrong and we are talking about an operation on a nerve in his neck and he is 35 years old. The last time he had surgery, he had complications. Could have happened again.

Right now, there is no reason to be concerned, but to say it is just spewing crap at this point might be premature. Remember a few years back where like 4 or 5 Browns players either had their careers ended or missed significant playing time due to staph infections. Many of them had relatively simple surgeries.

I want to see guys like Brady and Manning play forever, but that isn't realistic to believe.

Very nice "what if" post........it is what it is around here and I think you summed up what could have been very nicely.

A lot of that type of gloom and doom comes from the tone put out by the newspapers I believe. The days of "Boston sports are cursed" is way gone and down the road. We have been blessed with great teams in all the major sports this entire decade.

But.....it still may be in our blood.....justifiable or not.

Your point rings true. I surely do remember. That and the Guttierrez army that formed in the pre-season said the exact opposite about Matty. Sure, we didn't make the playoffs but 11-5 with him at the helm was a heckuva run. I dont see Curtis Ainter leading the Dolts to 11 wins.

That being said, as a football fan at heart, I want to see Peyton vs. Brady Dec. 4th. It's just great theater.

The difference between the two fan bases (as well as media mentality) is that hereabouts contrarian viewpoints and moderately critical viewpoints and blind homerism tend to exist in nearly equal parts. That's simply not the case in Indiana... Peyton is worshipped there by all but a minute lunatic fringe and a dogged contingent of trolls. We don't even allow trolling here because we have sufficient resident trollish mentality to achieve and maintain significant nagging discontent at all times...

I think one reason this franchise is so disliked nationally is not so much because we've won alot but because we troll so much... yet amongst ourselves whine and complain like enlightened, entitled, unappreciative spoiled brats. And it's unfortunate that our dysfunction reflects so negatively on the players and coaches and owner here who by and large are a thoroughly admirable group.

Indiana fans are the Stepford wives, plucked from the farm and conditioned to be greatful for what they've been given. In comparison, Pats fans are the Real Housewives of NE, constantly craving attention and infighting amongst themselves and shamlessly clawing for acknowledgement they believe is their birthright...
