Yes. Not as much as a guy like Beckham, but maybe more so than any other US athlete in the 4 major sports. When he was injured in 2008 it was on the sports page of the China Daily.

Wow. That's surprising. Since you brought up the 4 major sports, I would have expected Lebron and Kobe to head the list with Manning being THE MAN in football (endorsements, etc).

Most NBA stars suffer from guilt by association (gangsta image). Not to mention each harmed his own appeal with his behavior (Kobe's more like Tiger's whose image is declining at a time when his skills aren't as special as they once were - and Lebron just because he's so damned self absorbed). Manning remains largely a national phenomenon - he doesn't fit the European/intrnational profile and that forehead likely scares the bejesus out of residents in developing markets...

Brady dodged a small caliber bullit with Bridget, but the way he's handled himself aside from that and in it's aftermath has made him an even more sympathetic and admirable figure globally. You don't necessarily sense it from the hard core NFL community because of rivalry and jealousy. But then they tend to be wired differently than most of the rest of society...which is where his broad appeal lies.

Very nice email. Can't stop laughing and couldn't agree more...

does brady really have a global image? Like really?

Oh yeah. A lot of it is, of course, due to Gisele, who has reached the ethereal superstar status of being branded only by her first name. I laughed as I read a thread earlier this year where some folks here were questioning whether Tom and Gisele could "afford" their Brentwood home.

Brady has carefully crafted his image and brand, being photographed all over Europe and Latin America. The products he endorses have international appeal and the ads he does are targeted at men and women in Europe and Latin America.

Put it this way. Peyton Manning, Aaron Rogers, Drew Brees and their wives/girlfriends could spend a day shopping and dining-out in Manhattan and be bothered by only a couple of dozen or so American fans for photos or autographs. Tom and Gisele would have a hoard of paparazzi on their trail and, after a couple of hours, would be swamped by foreign and American visitors and have trouble walking down the street. The same would occur in London or Paris, where Manning et al would only be bothered by American tourists.

i dunno about brady being more of a global image than kobe bryant or lebron james.

Kobe made something around 50 million in the past year, with 30 mil being his salary... so 20 mill from endorsements is a **** ton.

He is well known in china as well....

Brady only made a measley 31.. but that could be due to his selective endorsement choice?

I wonder how much he will get from having stake in UGG.

No one here knows who Manning is.

Kobe is popular, you're right about that. People love him because he's good and it drives me crazy. Many more people know what the word "rapist" means than before I got here.

Of course the most popular athlete in China is Yao Ming.

Globally speaking I think more sports fans know who Kobe is but a different set of people know who Brady is now because of his wife and all the tabloid stuff. I could be wrong, of course.

it still makes me wonder.... you are only a top athlete for so long, so why isn't brady hoarding endorsements and cash?

Maybe he is thinking long-term?

Will she buy the NFL and end this lock out that for some reason troubles her snookie-wokums?

Tom was not thatdevote with Bridget Monyhan --- (he was acting like 90% of American Catholics in that instance) so I am not too sure the Catholic teachings on divorce are a binding constraint.

She is not American. Catholicism in the third world (Sorry, Brazil, but you are not in Europe) is sometimes adhered to by Catholics.

Of course when dance with a little string covering their arse for Carinval I'm sure they are thinking about the watchful eyes of that Jesus statue.

I wonder if brady will be able to take the route of a beckham or jordan/woods.. where he will have his own brand and thus be able to make a ton of money over his life-time

Ever see the hat that isn't available anywhere...TB12. I think locally there'd be a tremendous market for a TFB product line too...

Thing is, those athletes pretty much had their own brands from early in their careers and were/are able to spend their careers building the brand. I don't see Brady starting a brand after he retires and then that brand having any great amount of cache.

Brazil has the fourth largest economy on the planet. Granted, there's a huge income divide (there is here in America, too), but Brazil is hardly third world. It absolutely surpasses most of Europe right now.

I don't know how much he necessarily cares, since his wife is the clear breadwinner in the family, but if he wins another Super Bowl late in his career, I could see Brady having a pretty major post-retirement profile, surpassing Montana and Elway's.

He is, just in ways that are slightly less visible than Manning

That's hardly saying anything. Rodney Harrison has a higher post-NFL-career profile than Montana and Elway.

IIRC, Brady has the second-highest endorsement income of any NFL player (after Paymetons, natch); because he doesn't do nearly as many ads, I guess that he gets more money per deal.

yea, if brady wins won more ring, it could catapult him.

But still... he has to take advantage. Turning down endorsements is not the way imho. Obviously you dont want over-exposure.. but times like these don't come around every day!

its crazy how gisele makes so much dough from such simple endeavors..

looks go a long way i guess
