FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Broken Tackles 2010

According to FO:

McCourty was the surest tackler among DBs
Mayo was the second-surest tackler among LBs, behind Clay Matthews
Wilfork was as sure a tackler as any other DL

This is as measured by a ratio of missed tackles to tackles.

They concede that they could miss a missed tackle here or there, so the precise rankings are not set in stone.

Jumps in before some random knob says tackles are meaningless and Mayo doesn't make plays.

I'll do the same before our resident closet Jet fans start in with the obligatory greatest-player-to-ever-live drooling man-love for Revis and dismiss McCourty as an afterthought.

Hey, we all know tackles are meaningless and Mayo doesn't make plays.

lol...is that directed towards me?

I admire any great player...even if he is a Jet. And i've never dismissed McCourty as an afterthought. I think he could be the next elite shutdown CB in the league but i consider Revis/Aso better because they've been doing it longer and at a higher level.

Even more praise for McCourty.

Profootballfocus rated McCourty as the #1 rookie last year so they aren't alone in that department.

Ahead of Bradford,Suh.

McCourty also had a significantly better statistical rookie season than God Almighty Revis FWIW.

Revis had 87 tackles,sack,FF,3 INT and gave up 3 TD's rookie year.

McCourty 82 tackles,sack,2 FF,7 INT,17 passes broken up. Not sure how many TD's he gave up. More than 3 i think. Pro Bowler.

McCourty is definately off to a great start to his career and if he continues to improve he could be scary good.

I'd prefer something more solid than wikipedia as a source when referencing the amount of TD's a corner allowed. It would be interesting to see the official score for posterity's sake.

As for McCourty, let's face it. If he comes out 4/5ths as good as Revis we'll be pretty happy. His scope for improvement is tremendous in a developing defense.

McCourty was a good corner the first half of last season. His improvement over the second half of the season was nothing short of amazing. If he plays as well next year as he did the 2nd half of 2010, he will be the best, hands down.

i tried finding a better source for it but most sites don't list TD's allowed.

I'm wondering right now...was Kyle Wilson rated ahead of McCourty before the 2010 draft? I couldn't follow the draft that year.

Kyle Wilson was ranked near bottom with a lot of missed tackles.....McCourty was clearly the much better prospect given what he's accomplished in his rookie season....

BB and the scouting team know their stuff.....:D

Nah, nothin' personal. Was just in a goofin' mood. You seem alright random. I know he's good but he's only got 4 seasons under his belt. He's got a loooonnnggg way to go before he get's mentioned in the same paragraph as a Night Train Lane or Rod Woodson. Plus he's a Jet. Blech!.
