BC coach leaves. Bad news for the Patriots?

The story was first broken yesterday a.m. by the Morning Mojo sports radio show on 620 AM here in Raleigh. Sportcenter on ESPN and the Boston Globe web site has it today. Sorry for the BC fans, but it's true.

Here's the AP story in the Raleigh News and Observer:

http://www.newsobserver.com/753/story/518756.html

I think he was talking about the rumor of Dean Peas going to BC, everyone knows about O'Brien by now.

I wasn't disputing the truth of the O'Brien to NC State move, but the the original poster's claim that Pees would be encouraged go to BC.
Oh. My bad. 10 characters

This is the best thing that has happened to BC football since Flutie. O'Brien sucks terribly. He gets to all these crappy bowls. He has had years where his team could have gotten into a BCS bowl...like gee this year and it is HIS fault for getting BC sent to crappy bowl games all the time. Good news for BC. We'll see about the Pats..........

I think there's no better Patriots fan than Bob Kraft and I can't imagine him doing anything that would harm the team.

I think O'Brien is an excellent coach - while he has had a good but not outstanding record at BC (75-45) he has been handicapped in recruiting at BC.

At NC State he will enjoy:

1. An admissions policy which is friendlier to student-athletes
2. A state-of-the-art stadium
3. A region which many people find to be an outstanding place to live (Raleigh is the fastest growing big or medium size city east of the Mississipi and outside of Florida)
4. Access to more locally grown high school talent

I think (and hope) he will achieve the outstanding success which eluded him at BC

Boston College coach Tom O'Brien left for NC State today. Rumors over there that since Bob Kraft is on BC's Board of Directors that he will push for Dan Pees to be a candidate for the job. Have to think this would be a disaster for the Patriots.

I think it is a leap of all leaps to think Peas will even get considered for the BC job. I don't think DP is interested, being the DC with the Patriots is a better gig than HC at BC. (that should clear things up)

I think O'Brien's move (if it is true) will help the Pats. They will get another scout in the south land. O'Brien and BB are close, with all the talent in the south he will be another set of eyes for the Patriots.

On another note, check out this question from Frank Osborn... Frank if you are on this board, way to go buddy, you nailed this one!

I would just like to know the logic behind picking center, Dan Koppen, in the 5th round instead of addressing one of our other needs. In my eyes, the center position is not a big weakness at all for us.

Harwichport, Mass.

After losing Grey Ruegamer in free agency, the only other center on the roster was starting left guard Mike Compton so depth there was a priority. Also, Damien Woody is entering the final year of his contract and negotiations on extension have not exactly moved quickly and smoothly. The team has to prepare for Woody to leave in free agency. Bill Belichick has a solid relationship with BC coach Tom O’Brien, which makes me feel confident that he had good information on Koppen. He was a fifth round pick. It’s not like they used a first round pick on a position that wasn’t an immediate need.

I wouldn't go quite that far. I think he is a solid coach that for some reason can't keep his team from folding under pressure, like in the Syracuse game 2 years ago, the Wake Forest/Miami games this year, and I think they blew an easy ACC game last year too. He was just good enough to never get fired here. I'm hoping BC can get Mark Whipple, former UMass coach (took them to a 1-AA title), and is now with the Steelers.

Also its not his fault BC goes to crappy bowls, the bowls themselves decide who they want to take (as long as the teams in question are within 1 game in the ACC standings). Maryland and Clemson this year both gave guarantees on tickets sold, and Maryland I think promised something else, though I forget what. That's why those teams got picked before us. Oh and I'm insulted you don't consider the Meinekee Car Care Bowl versus Navy as a major, important bowl.

Wow, O'Brien was adament yesterday that he's not a candidate for any job and his only concern is getting BC ready for the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Lol...and this is from the same athletic department who, after the original expansion plan by the ACC was shot down, told the Big East that they were committed to helping get the Big East back on its feet. Only then did they enter into a backroom deal with Miami.

I always liked TOB. I wish him luck at NC St.

Re: BC coach leaves. Great news for the BC

O'Brien was effectively fired. Do you think the BC AD (DeFillipo) gives permission for a fellow ACC team to interview their coach unless the BC powers-to-be preferred that O'Brien find a way out of town? The answer is no. If BC wanted to keep O'Brien, money would not have been the problem. The bottom line is O'Brien rated as no better than C+ game manager, which repeatedly hindered BC over the years against superior coaching staffs. BC will improve if they hire a coach like Mark Whipple (as mentioned by STOKES above).

ya, O'Brien's departure shocked me as well. Too bad, I thought he was a good fit at BC.
