Football Outsiders has a feature that lets you see the most similar player seasons from since they began tracking stats.

For example, they found that TFB's 2010 regular season performance most closely mirrors Peyton Manning's 2007 performance.

Here's the amusing thing: without looking, what was the top comparison for GRONK's 2010 season?

Not really comparable. Defenses could get away with a lot more in the year of the Consulship of Pollio and Vetus.

I cheated. That is actually pretty funny, hahaha. Originally guessed Ben Coates, then I remembered that FO hasn't been around that long.

One of Ben Watson's?

Stats wise Hernandez? Almost same receptions, same YPC, same yardage. Just less TD's. They were both very highly ranked among TE's by FO during the season if i'm not mistaken.

Shot in the dark. Shannon Sharpe's rookie year. granted that wouldn't be that amusing.

Sharpe doesn't come close to Gronk in his first 3 seasons. And in his other years he has a ****load of more yards and receptions.

A less amusing stat from FO is that they have both James Sanders and Brandon Meriweather among the worst run stopping DBs in the NFL last year.

I know this will drive people crazy for me saying it, but that may be why the Pats drafted Dowling. Yes, I am sticking with the Dowling to safety bandwagon. Although, the longer the lockout, the less likely he will be playing this position this year.

It isn't Dallas Clark in 07 is it?

Yeah, you are right. Just made a quick guess. I think a 2007 Dallas Clark guess was more in line of the ton of the original post. I just figured he might have gotten compared to a HOF TE and chose Sharpe off the top of my head.

That one is a little bit of a head scratcher for me...i don't recall Meriweather or Sanders being bad in run support. Nick Collins is ranked near both of those guys so i don't know..the article does say that those numbers can be deceiving.

Meriweather and Sanders would've been better in run support if they didn't have a rotating door defensive line for half the season and forced to play in the sub.

Mike Ditka

Yeah . . . the closest comparison to GRONK is Hernandez, and vice versa.

Brandon and James grade out poorly because they play so far off the LOS. FO's stat is entirely based on how far past the LOS the tackle occurs, which means free safeties are going to naturally have less tackles of short yardage.

FO even points this out in their article on it.

This stat has some uses, but pointing out the lower guys isn't one of them, unless of course a lousy LB snuck in there.

Of more important note, not one Patriot DL appears in the top or bottom 10.

Steven Segal 1992 Under Siege year?

Who was it? Bravaro? The suspense is killing me:)
BTW... I'm of the opinion that 2010 was Merriweather's last year as a Patriot. From what I gather he liked to improivise from the scheme a bit too much. So the new DB to Saferty is possible.

I cant imagine how you could statistically rank DBs in run defense with any hope at accuracy.

who is "Bravaro"? I heard Meriweather likes merryweather and hates snow.I just bought an Impro I vise..clamps like a mother.Of course,Hanes just came out with a safer T shirt made of non-combustible recycled newspaper. Now a player can actually wear his own press clippings.
