Don't blow it again - sign Mankins

Unless the Pats want to shorten Brady's career, they must sign Mankins.

Without Mankins, the Pats starting guards for the season (for now) would be Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell. Connolly's a good backup but one of the worst starting guards in the NFL and Wendell wouldn't make the 53 man roster on most teams.

First of all there is no way Mankins turns down the 10 mill. this year, that is more money than he has earned in his career. Second Cannons progress is going very well, and it is looking like he will not have any problems from the treatments. Thirdly Kaczur will not be released even for the 3.5 mill. cap because of his ability to cover for the acclamation of both Soldier and Cannon. Lastly Connoly although not starter quality is a very good back up. So for this season there is no shortage of OL deapth. If next year a quality OG is picked up in the draft, Mankins may be expendable, so why pay the big price on a long term deal when all we may need is a one year rental.

Yeah kraft wanted a public apology from the All Pro guard and Mankins wouldn't make one - deal dead, 'nuff ced....

This isnt true, and if it was it would be an embarassment on both sides.

Mankins was offered 8 million a year and wanted close to 10.

Thats ridiculous. If he's still at that number then let him walk.

I see an interesting dilemma

G not a position of value (contractually speaking)

but at the same point...

do we want this guy on TFB's line until TFB retires.

SIGN HIM!!!

The apology demand story wasn't true, but he wasn't offered $8M a year and the real reason he lost it and his agent spun the whole public apology story was because after he privately apologized to Bob Kraft they didn't just give him what he wanted. Mankins thinks Kraft is the guy holding him down when in fact it's the coach he respects - who on this team assigns the positional and player value contract negotiations are based upon. They offered him something in the vacinity of $7.5M AAV in new money but insisted (as they routinely do including with TFB) his remaining (in this case RFA) season be folded into the deal lowering it's overall average and cap cost. He wants $8M+ AAV, period.

The really odd part of all of this is despite owning a self sustaining farm (and it really must be) in CA he hasn't left the Foxboro area code in over a year now... Unusual behavior for a left coast resident who has been done with this team at least twice in the last 8 months... Of course it's also unusual to have a player party to a lawsuit claiming a lockout causes players irreparable harm when he held out himself for half a season the prior year and still made the pro bowl and got franchise tagged for $10.1M.

I think ultimately the lockout will insure that Mankins isn't going anywhere.
