Comcast Sports New England's Tom Curran speculates that Wes Welker and the Patriots are headed for a "contractual mud wrestle."
Welker, 30, leads the NFL with 432 catches over the past four seasons and is scheduled for just a $2.15 million salary in 2011. It's also a contract year. Whether Welker pursues a heftier price tag this or next offseason remains to be seen, but it's coming. Welker likely would've asked for a new contract last year if he wasn't recovering from major knee and shoulder surgeries.

Will Wes loose a step throughout the contract? Certainly, but in having this kid we have a LEADER and a man who will sacrifice himself and physical well being to go get that pass up the middle and take a physical beating as he does it.

Moose is riding me hard for taking shortcuts lol Eg.-idc idk w/e h8 gr8 etc I guess he disapproves of abbreviations and wants more of an essay.) Although I absolutely love Welker I could easily see BB trading him, promoting Edelperson, and then bringing in Dane Sanzenbacher to take over for Edelperson. It seems like slot receivers of the Welker mold are becoming replaceable, like running backs are, and it hardly makes sense to pay big money to Welker, who isnt getting any younger.

Welker, Edleman and Woodhead. I don't see the Patriots spend a lot of money to keep Welker.

I don't want to give him the world. I have limits. CAP is a game I hope Welker is 1 of the few that takes less $$$ to stay where he is happy and flourishes.


Don't be be mercenary Welker... Be a PATRIOT a man out for the cause a man of purpose and belonging that is willing to fight with his same comrades and not jump ship for more $$$

When Curran speculates it's usually baseless... If he has any sources they are more often than not either disgruntled or outside the loop.

When Wes was traded for and signed back in 2007, most fans and mediots thought the team overpaid. I think they value Wes more than some think. While I think what he did with his Tubby toe comments likely annoyed him, I bet Bill was actually pleased with the way Wes handled his quarter benching and it's aftermath. Sometimes Bill is testing guys desire and determination to not only win but win here. I also think Wes is smart enough to realize that his chances of earning the bulk of any future deal is exponentially greater here than elsewhere. Here he's a HOF QB's established go to guy.

Just curious about the "Leader" portion of your monologue. I see more of a "loyal soldier" than a leader. But my last memory of Private Welker was how he went off reservation, ignoring a standing order from his General, and had his George Carlin moment in front of the microphone.....forcing his General to issue orders..."to the stockade for 15 minutes." Bad Soldier!

I was the very first person on the Welker bandwagon outside of his immediate family. I love the guy and hope he sticks around for as long as he wants, a la Troy Brown.

But something tells me that this situation isn't nearly as rosey as fans wish it were. I can see NE holding off on approaching Wes heading in the 2009/2010 season/offseason since he was coming off a serious injury. But he proved his worth and it surprised me that negotiations never got serious.

I hope I'm wrong, but I get the feeling this is his final season in NE.

OTOH, for all we know, it could be that both sides decided to wait, à la Matt Light, because of the uncertainty in what the new CBA will do.

In any case, I don't think Welker is looking to break the bank; I can't think of another team where he'd be more valuable than he is in New England.

I'm not so sure about that first part...

Doing extensions was tough last year even absent rehab. Because of the 30% rule and the limits on amortization not to mention the threat of a lost season. Just ask Peyton Manning. The Pats were fortunate their most significant player in his final contract year was a year past rehab and is such a team player. Wes still had two years to go. No real sense extending him under those circumstances.

Anyone following Texas Tech might have had a head start on me, but I'm pretty proud of my early appreciation for Welk. It was at the first Miami game in 2004 when I noticed that the same kid kept walking on the field, kickoffs, returns, extra points, field goal.

Search my post history and you'll find one where I advocate during the 2006 season opener for NE tossing a 2nd in Miami's direction. At that point in time he had barely 1,000 yards receiving in 3 seasons but I saw something very "Patriot" about him and new his numbers would soar in this system. Like Troy Brown, only quicker.

Walking into the stadium prior to the Miami game in 2006, I joked with my buddy that I was going to get a #83 jersey with the name "Welker" stitched into the back in the hopes that Wes would one day be a Patriot. Of course he almost singlehandedly made Joey Harrington look good that day, making it so a few more Patriot fans were aware of him then when I made that comment.

Yeah, I'm pretty confident I was one of the first 10 or so Patriot fans to want Welker on the team. I don't often get them that right, so just let me enjoy this one, alright?

A 2nd? The trade probably wouldn't happen though.

Why would it stink on ice? A backup QB and getting value for a player leaving next year (I only said If BB knew the pats couldn't resign him).

I love what Welker has done for this franchise, but my feeling is I'd be surprised if he got another contract to his liking here. Add in age, injury, the development of other offensive weapons, and Welker's recent attention-getting comments (the Rex foot bit, "I wish there was a lockout every year"). You also have to plan for the time when those '08-'09-'10 picks' contracts start coming up for renewal. I think if Welker decides he's happy here and doesn't choose "money over championships," great. But I wouldn't blame the guy for seeking a bigger payday than the Patriots will likely offer him.

Just my 2¢.

it pains me to say this but this is a BUSINESS and Welker is expendable if had w/ a hefty price tag. It is about the $$$

Wes is my favorite FYI. Hernandez/Gronk are Dead-Heat at 2nd I picked hernandez in when on the board


I hope everything works out, but what will be will be. If it were only in the hands of BB. Everything is so lets wait and see.

I love Wes, and think he's the best we have at what he does, but in reality we have three people that can potentially fill that role in various ways (Edelman, Hernandez, Woodhead) and with luck a fourth in Vereen. I hope he stays, but you don't break the bank for a 30+ year old receiver when you have other options and roster spots that could be upgraded with that money.
