Grants the motion for a STAY. Not sure if that is a good thing or not, but that is what is going on. Looks like a win for the owners.

I heard the owners were "ordered" to make another proposal later tonight and that negotioations went well. I'll feel better when there's an agreement, but this is positive.

If the players lose out on the 770 mil in damages from the Minny court things will really heat up at the bargaining table.

That's kind of a horrible take. But it IS a take. So, congrats on that.

You know how when you were a kid, and you did something wrong, and your folks made you stay in a few days to teach you a lesson? Did you really think you'd NEVER get to go out and play again? Same thing here. Sort of. Short term, the kids get stung. Before long, they'll be right back to playing again.

How is it a victory for people who hate workers? What does the NFL players have to do with the average people of this country?

As for wanting the NFL to return, everyone knows this will likely go to into June no matter what. The 8th Circuit is going to rule for the NFL and then they will start negotiating. The 8th Circuit has already made it pretty clear that they are going to rule for the owners.

Here’s the money quote, from page 11: “[W]e have serious doubts that the district court had jurisdiction to enjoin the League’s lockout, and accordingly conclude that the League has made a strong showing that it is likely to succeed on the merits.”

Both sides are waiting for this ruling to gain the upper hand to start real negotiations. It looks like the owners are going to win this round which might make the players more willing to play ball in mediation. It certainly has made the owners do it since they are so willing to make a new offer at Judge Boylan's request today. The question is whether the owners feeling blood in the water will ask for a too lopsided deal because they smell blood or the players stupidily let Jeffrey Kessler single handily destroy the NFL since they have their backs against the wall.

Sal Paolantonio of ESPN reports, citing Hall of Fame defensive end Carl Eller, that a breakthrough has occurred in the negotiations. Eller, who is one of the named plaintiffs in a lawsuit brought by former players and consolidated with the Tom Brady antitrust case, said that U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan asked the owners at the outset of the day to make a new proposal, and the owners have agreed to do so.

Currently, the proposal is being formulated. Per Paolantonio, the players are very encouraged by the developments, and we think they should be. Given that the players never responded to the league’s March 11 offer, the NFL easily could have balked at the request to make a new offer as an invitation to bid against itself. By agreeing to make a new offer, the NFL has shown good faith, which possibly has helped to thaw the relationship between the two sides, at least a little.

One thing is for sure, this ruling has nothing to do with workers. It was a blow to millionaires vs. the billionaires. It is funny that people on both sides of the arguments like to switch the players from the "product" of the NFL to "workers" whenever it suits their argument.

A big win for those who want football to resume. Now many the players will get serious on negotiations knowing they can't get what they want through the courts. I think it would have been ugly had the players won, not only for football but every other sport approaching a new CBA.

I fully support the players getting a fair deal, but it's very clear they had full intention of dragging this through the courts to get a great deal for themselves instead of a fair deal for all sides.

Getting the principals to sit down and get a deal done is a good thing....

Getting rid of the middle man saves time and both sides will settle on some middle ground..

Townsie, this has NOTHING to do with "workers". This entire court case is a legal abuse of a necessary law being misused for selfish purposes. In other words, lawyers using the "system" to benefit themselves and to some degree their clients....but mostly to build up their egos, reputations, and most importantly...... billable hours. .

BTW- I wouldn't over estimate this "victory" for the owners. If I read it correctly (and who knows if I am), what they are basically saying is that the 8th circuit doesn't think that the Players are currently incurring "irreparable harm", which they are not. It doesn't say ANYTHING about the overall merits (pro or con) about the actual case in play.

IF it gets them back to talking about a workable CBA, instead of a legal case, then it is a ruling well served. However, if it just bruises some egos and causes sides to dig more firmly into their entrenched positions, then it means.....nothing.

On one side I have to believe that the lawyers behind the players expected this ruling, and have plans for it, just as the owners knew that the Nelson ruling wasn't the "last word". So I have doubts that the people running this strategy will suddenly change their goals.

However what I'm hoping for is that the ACTUAL players, like the 500 odd FAs or those not even knowing if they can become FAs. You know the guys who are actually BEING hurt by all of this. I'm hoping that THOSE guys start to pressure the "leadership" to start to take these negotiations seriously. Just as I am hoping that those running the "owners" case, don't take this opportunity to get something done, instead of "going for the jugular."

In other words, is there anyone out there who has the power to please get the "lawyers" out of the room!

Judge Nelson almost assuredly knew this was going to be the outcome, so why did she rule as she did? Was she bound by the law to rule as she did? One of these courts is grossly disserving the people, which one is it? The district court (Nelson) or the 8th circuit? Are the laws in question so vague that the judiciary cannot help but look confused & political?

The owners wanted an additional $1B off the top of the pie, plus a higher % of the remainder, all without backing up claims that they were supposedly losing money. They also brokered back door deals with TV networks to get cash even if there wasn't a season. They planned a long term strategy over a few years to get out of the CBA and try to bully their way into a new deal. They just expected the players to fold and be crushed like little peons.

For those trying to relate the NFL to society or capitalism, stop. 1/3 of these owners inherited their teams, they did not take any business risk. The vast majority of these owners got the public to take most of the financial risk and subsidize their stadiums and businesses.

Your really looking at this from one side. The owners backed out of a bad deal which they had the right, the 1 billion was negotiated way down. As far as the "back door" deals as you call them was just smart business because they kinew the players may not seriously negotiate and take this to the courts, guess what, they did.
What about the other 2/3 rds of the owners that did risk a lot of their money? Theres not going to be any more publically financed stadiums which is one of the reasons they're asking for more off the top, among others.
I think this is gonna get things moving in a positive direction and we'll see footbalkl this fall.
