Pats d-linemen bond at Wilfork's home - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Patriots players sometimes say that their teammates are like extended family. During the season, they spend as much time, if not more, with those teammates than their immediate family.

That connection was highlighted today when second-year defensive lineman Kyle Love tweeted the following: "At Vincent Wilfork's crib having a great time with the big homie! Gerard Warren, Ron Brace, and Brandon Deaderick here too."

Good to see Vince extending his leadership outside of the locker room. Also promising to see that Deaderick is there. Not sure what his issues were that led to suspension last season, but hopefully he's learning how to be a pro from Wilfork and Warren.

Sounds like a slumber party at Vince's! Afterwards they'll raid the local buffets and clean-house.

Interesting that Gerrard Warren was there. I wonder if he'll be returning with the team. No Pryor?

I'll bet you those guys could bankrupt an all-you-can-eat buffet. :D

I saw this on twitter and thought 'awwww bless them' ;)

They'd be like the Klumps!

heh...

"But the sign says it's an all-you-can-eat buffet!"

"That's right! And that's ALL you can eat here!"

After reading the names of the DLmen in the story, one thought came to me:
The pats really, really need to get way, way more athletic at DE.
Too bad Bill didn't address this need by drafting Cam Jordan at 17,
and waiting for Solder at 28.
And if Solder's gone, then Derreck Sherrod would do just as well, if not better.

They had pick 33 and many others to trade, there's no way they couldn't have drafted him before NO had they wanted to. You'll just have to face it, the Patriots didn't think he was a fit.

I have to face it, but I don't have to agree with it.

Maybe it's not the players who are constantly poor fits, but the scheme itself.

That's puzzling to me. Why would the Patriots think that the guy who is considered the top prospect for a position of need would not be a good fit? I'd kill to get inside BB's head regarding those issues.
We pretty much passed on 3 of the top prospects for the position.

Of course not. i don't follow college ball enough to have any real opinions, but looking at him on video, my guess is he isn't strong enough or a wide enough frame to take on double teams etc.

If you think they should change their scheme for him that's your right too, but I doubt they will. Looks like a good starter for a 4 man line, which would make him a backup, specialist in the mold of Greene or Wright on our team.

We play a stout 3 man line and all premium starters need to be big strong tackles in college.

Either a huge tall tackle, or a small DE, who hopefully can convert to a LB.

That's a huge gap for a "defensive end" between 300-330 lb guys and 250-270 pound guys who can cover and perform other LB duties.

Players that can't play LB, but aren't huge tackles make great ends in 4 man lines.

One end, would be the quicker (like a Freeney) we don't want because they don't play linebacker. the other end could be big and quick (280-290) but not a double team, huge player we need to play end in our version of the 3-4.

Seymour probably has ranged from 310-330 during his career. He is also agile and can rush. Marcus Stroud is close (physically), most college players are nowhere close. That is why we picked Seymour 6th overall.

If we spend a high pick on a DE who can't or won't do the grunt work, we'll have to replace him with a big, less talented player, thus making him an unhappy backup/specialist, when he might be an all pro in a 4-3.

If we draft a small DE high and he can't play LB, we end up with an unhappy specialist that could be an every down player on a 4-3.

You can pick up one dimensional big linemen, or pass rush only guys in FA.

So now you can not only predict the future of this coming season's pass rush, but you also think you have a better opinion on NFL schemes than Bill Belichick? He just forgot more overnight than you ever knew.

But when have we ever had starting D-linemen that one would consider athletic? Our best d-linemen in the past have been the fatties. Ted Washington, Keith Traylor (a good fill in), Wilfork, Seymour (athletic, but also a freak that is near-impossible to find again), Warren. And Jarvis Green, while athletic, was a back-up. It seems that the defensive scheme favors weight over speed. And that is consistent with the supposed and ostensible weakness of a 3-4 defensive--opponents running up the gut. BB values the big boys, pound-for-pound.

They trusted their draft boards and didn't see go after Cam Jordan.

But then you have guys like Mike Wright, who's pretty damn fast for a DL. Granted, they haven't used him much as a starter, but there's definitely a role for the speedier big guys.

Yeah, they like the speedy guys as UDFAs. That's where you get your subpackage guys in a perfect world, not in the early 2nd where a lot of people wanted Reed or Sheard. Wright is a good example, as is Guyton. Give up size for speed, but only when it's cheap.

We're absolute toast with three #1 draft choices as starters and three other DL's who have started for us as backups.

Of course, if Belichick thinks it necessary, we might get reps from a re-signed G. Warren, or from Pryor. If G Warren comes back, we'll have seven starters.

Then there are also our Practice Squad level players (and binkies to some): Love, Weston and Richard.

The defense was in nickel situations over half the time last year, which means that Jordan would've been on the field over half the time this year for us, too.

Besides, whom would you rather have playing for us:
An athletic, strong player at 6-4 1/2, almost 290 with the frame to push 300
and with football bloodlines, such as Cam Jordan, or:
A fat, lazy, soft, cartoon-watching blob such as Ron Brace?

Could you please supply a list of quality pass rush only guys who will be UFAs this season, assuming 2010 rules?
