NFL.com news: Which QB from 2011 draft will have greatest career impact?

NFL.com analysts were asked the above question.

Lombardi's response:

Ryan Mallett will have the largest impact of any quarterback drafted this year, and his impact will be felt on and off the field. On the field, he will be given time to develop, to watch and learn from one of the greatest ever in the game -- Brady. Off the field, Mallett's ability will make Patriots coach Bill Belichick not want to stop coaching in the next 10 years and keep chasing titles. Mallett brings good news to Pats fans in every area.

He's saying Mallett will be so good that Brady goes the way of Joe Montana.

Given the amount of money he'll tie up, it's hard to suggest anyone other than Newton for overall impact. He's got an entire team's five year future tied up in his hands, for better or for worse.

as much as i hate NE, they're the perfect team for mallett

Then why do you have 2,000+ posts on a Pats forum?

i have a crapton of posts there, obviously the most of any board, but yeah, it's not as lively as other boards...

plus some of the political talk is interesting, and they don't do that at all

He's going to have an impact but it is going to be on Brady, who is going to have the same fire he had when he wanted Bledsoe's job but this time the shoe is on the other foot. Brady has always worked his ass off and would have been busting it no matter what, i just think this ups the stakes and makes him take to an even higher level.

Mike and Mike (Lombardi and Mayock) both like to think because they worked for Bill once upon a time they can channel him. If it were that simple they'd both be working for a team's FO (or even Bill's) and not on the league's network...

Bill only selected Mallett because he couldn't find a trading partner willing to swap him a 2nd next year for a 3rd, so he drafted the one guy he had a remaining guaranteed roster spot for coming out of that round, a developmental QB. If Belichick was remotely thinking of securing Brady's replacement in this draft, or if he was thinking Mallett was remotely the QB to replace him with, he'd have tapped that selection a lot sooner.

Mallett's career trajectory begins with proving he can even replace Hoyer by 2012. The last QB Bill took in the third couldn't even fend an UDFA off after the #2 job was handed to him by default. It's too bad things unfolded as they did because the JETS ended up with the QB best suited to back Brady up from this class. That may stunt his long term development, although he's got a better shot at advancing to #2 or starting than Mallett over the next two years...because all he's got to do is pass KOC to take aim on the Sanchise.

Everyone thought Mallet would be long gone by then. I think BB saw the opportunity to develop Mallet and possibly trade him more than find Bradys replacement.

Simple QB solution
Brady and Mallet race a 10 yd dash every Friday to see who starts. The QB able to finish gets the assignment.

I voted "probably" definitely, not because I think he'll necessarily be Brady's successor but because I think he'll beat out Hoyer as #1 backup by the end of this season and I also think that Brady will start missing the occasional game to injury when he hits 35.
