If memory serves the Pats traded Kickoff returner and starting CB Ellis Hobbs to the Eagles for a fifth round pick. They then promptly traded that fifth round pick along with their own fifth rounder, to get up into the fourth round to take Ohrnberger in the 2009 draft.

After the conclusion of Ohrnberger's second training camp last summer, he was cut on September 4th, 2010. No team in the NFL put in a waiver claim for him. Recall this was while Mankins was a holdout and the Pats were looking for Guard help. Ohrnberger was later resigned but was buried on the OG depth chart behind Undrafted OG Dan Connolly and Undrafted OG Ryan Wendell.

Is this guy a bust ?

1st and 2nd round picks who don't make it are busts. If you're picked after 100, it's hit/miss. He may not develop into a NFL starter. He still could. This will be his year to do it. With no S. Neal. The fact that we played Connolly instead of him tells me that he's probably on his way out the door if we sign a free agent or if M. Cannon can beat him out.

Isn't a bust a player who was drafter high?

Yes, he hasn't worked out, but he was a 4th rounder, not the 4th pick!

Maybe. Hard to ever call a 4th rounder a "bust" but he did come with higher than average hopes.

Considering the issues with the g/c positions, he'll have ample opportunity to make a mark this year.

Are we sure the Ohrnberger cut wasn't one of those "safe" roster moves, which resulted in him being re-signed a bit later?

Not sure what you mean ? Any of the other 31 teams could have had him for nothing. No one wanted him. So I guess maybe it was safe.

I would call him a bust because of what the Patriots have invested in him and what he has returned.

Foremost is that they elected to keep him on the roster and let Ted Larsen go.

Secondly, it was reported that the Patriots traded Hobbs to Philly specifically so they could package the fifth round picks for Ohrnberger.

Lastly they have devoted two seasons to develop him in a position for which they have had known needs with Neal aging and Mankins contract coming due. Eye witness reports of his progress are less than positive.

no bust just didn't make a good case. he was an ok JAG

They waived Larsen and Ohnrberger at the same time so this isn't true.

Putting that aside, the fact that Larsen started for TB doesn't make him good. I haven't watched him play that carefully enough to know one way or another but let's not confuse starting some as a rookie with being a legit NFL player.

I can't really call a fourth rounder a bust but I did have higher hopes for him--the Pats were so aggressive in getting him in the fourth that I figured he was a great sleeper candidate.

How is anyone past the first 2 rounds considered a "bust", specifically the first round players?

My definition of a bust is really confined to the top 10. They should be ready made impact players from day 1.

Someone is a "bust" when they don't perform up to expectations, being a 1st round pick makes being a bust a whole lot easier than a 4th round pick, but the 4th rounder can bust as well.

We picked him up in the 4th and hobbs was on his way out- --- what's the eagerness to label him a 'bust'?

Is it basically first year pro-bowl or a-hole in the nfl now?

Edit: waaaaiitaminute.............did I just get tricked into a joke thread?

Only if you expect much from the players taken after the 3rd round...

4th round for an OL is a tough call for "bust", but he's definitely been a disappointment, particularly because his low quality play has made the Hobbs deal look worse in hindsight.

I don't call anyone drafted in the 4th or later a bust. They are longshots that didn't work out. If they were someone's binky, then I suppose there could be disappointment.

I dont know how a 4th rounder who has made the team is considered a bust.

rich ohrnberger was drafted at the bottom of the 4th at pick 123 (from a package deal that also got us jake ingram).

with the very next pick (124) oakland selected louis murphy with the 4th rounder they got from us.

just an fyi.

4th round picks don't bust.

Ohrnberger was a longshot. He still might make a decent rotational player who plays surprisingly well in a pinch. He may never see the field. Either way, 4th rounders don't bust.

Hobbs played 16 games over two years (starting 7) and then retired. It's hard to say the deal was particularly bad.

No, it's not. You're using a freak injury to define a trade. I'm using the established game of Hobbs in comparison with the career, to date, of Ohrnberger. It was a bad trade.
