The Solder-Dowling connection.

By accident I've finally figured out BB's picking strategy.

Each players coach said the exact same thing about their players(Solder,Dowling) that struck out to me.

"He's the kind of guy you hope your daughter brings home someday."

It's the big selling point in drafting these guys and he's obviously trying to find a suitor for Amanda. He just has to control everything,that old rascal.

Opinions?

I think your going out on a limb on that one. I think this selling line with the coaches regarding daughters is just the new fad sell of this draft. blah blah, I wish I had a 100 players just like him, best player I ever coached etc. This one will be used more in the future I'm guessing.

Can you imagine if the coach at Hampton used this line for Kenrick Ellis? Every parents dream lol

The plot thickens...what if the NFL has somekind of a secret inbreeding code to create genetically superior players,coaches and GM's to keep us normal folk away from the stardom and money?

Yep. The first three draftees all have impeccable character according to their coaches and scouts. Nothing really new in that. Belichick will always take a guy who might be a (slightly) lesser raw talent but has strong character and work ethic than a guy who has more inherent physical talent, but not as morally straight.

He probably can't run a sub-5.0 40 either. Not sure of the relevence of desireable player characteristics to non-players.

NE drafted two players from TCU, which happened to be the only team from the pre-season Top 25 which did not have any players with police records. Obviously not THE reason the two players were selected by the Pats, but this fact adds to the thread's theme.

Watching tape on Solder i can see what everyone is saying pre and post draft.

The guy has great feet and is a tremendous athlete with great size and quickness. But i also see the criticisms that were there. Every time i saw him get high and let anyone near his body he was overpowered. With BB's 1st round record i am willing to trust him and scar on this but i find it very interesting that he was the top tackle on so many teams boards.

Here's hoping he's Vollmer version 2

-Solder is a rare physical specimen. 6'8 320 lbs with his kind of athleticism?
-Dowling is one of the tallest corners in this draft but still has 4.4 speed and a 38" vertical
-Vereen is an explosive multifaceted player who can contribute in all phases of the game.

The Pats do value high character, high work ethic guys. But that's only part of the criteria. I don't think they'd take what they consider an 'inferior' overall football player because of character concerns alone. They have drafted guys like Meriweather in the 1st, etc.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. If Player A grades out as a 7 and Player B grades out as a 4.5, character isn't going to push B ahead of A on the draft board. However, if B grades out as a 6.7, it very well could be close enough to be rated higher than A, especially in the early rounds.

If Jimmy Smith were available at #33, would the Patriots still have drafted Dowling? I'd guess yes.

Perhaps we can encourage their creativity by suggesting some new sell lines for next year? How about:

- "He's the kind of guy who would finish your kitchen renovation on time and under budget."

- "He's the kind of kid I wish my worthless kid would be."

- "He's the kind of guy who never commits the same felony twice."

- "He's the kind of guy you'd like your son to marry."*

- "A kid like that, you don't eat all at once."

Oh come on now. Jimmy Smith is a cancer. I wouldn't touch him even if he were available at 33 and Dowling weren't. I think it's nice that Dowling has a reportedly high character but I don't think they'd take a higher graded player over him unless the other guy was a bad seed/a risky pick due to character concerns.

Hmm, maybe it tells us that the character concerns were over-rated, or it could also tell us that a 3rd isn't worth all that much on a guy who's likely trade bait anyway.

Or it could tell you that BB cares about "FOOTBALL character." That he seeks guys who are super hard workers, coachable, and live and breathe the game more than he avoids guys who smoked a little pot or got into fights?

Mallett's off-field character has been the subject of endless chatter, but his football character seems to be universally praised.
