Now that Moss is gone, Tate sucks, and no one was picked up from the draft... Who will the pats use for a deep threat this year? I think its one of the major needs that gets overlooked cause the short passing game is so good. Well, is it really that good? All playoff games, the short passing game has blown and there is no deep threat. Tate isn't gonna cut it.

Possible options...

Price? Gonna get more action in year 2, all WRs do
FA? Ochocinco?

Its sad that there is only 1 guy who doesn't even play that is a deep threat.

All other playoff teams have 1, most have two.

Colts- garcon, wayne
packers- jennings, driver
ravens- bolden
jets- holmes, edwards
chiefs- bowe
steelers- mike wallace
chargers- jackson
falcons- LOL they have like 4 of them now
Saints- All saints WRs are deep threats
Eagles- jackson, maclin

All patriots long TDs were broken plays and I'm getting kind of tired of it

I'm down on Tate, but he doesn't suck, this will be the last year, I'm willing to give him to step up his game.

Bolden, Holmes, Edwards, Driver, and Bowe aren't really deep threats, and you can probably add Maclin to that list.

Ochocinco isn't gonna solve anything.

By the way how did the Pats do after they traded their deep threat last year?

when did boldin become a deep threat?

anyway, it's gonna be a footrace to see who gets deepest ---- first guy to 15 yds is the deep threat.

Probably Hernandez and Tate. Hernandez has shown a good ability to get into the second level quickly for a tight end. Tate underwhelms me and I'm hopeful he can improve this season. He'd be one of the few reasons you'd consider Ocho.

To be fair after seeing our draft I kinda hope we incorporate more smash mouth football in our game. As much as I love passing there's nothing better than seeing your o-line maul the opposition defense and the RB smacking them right in the mouth.

Does Tate really suck? Or did people just put wild expectations on a guy that was out of football for practically two years?

Before I comment further on this thread, is this the "Official Who is the patriots deep threat this year??":bricks:

We have too many guys who do the same thing, thats what you are saying right? Welker, Branch, and Edleman are slot/possession guys. Tate/Price should have shown something....I'm sure a FA will be added and may the best 5 win! I'm not married to any of em, Welker is the only one with any trade value. They have all had their opportunities but we do need the deep threat. It cost us in the playoffs no doubt. We have paid a price in picks for 3 of them and none are worth what we paid so far. Dont hate on Ocho, I think properly motivated he or even Moss 2nd could add to this corp.

Of players you mentioned/implied: (Rec/Yds/Tds, first season unless otherwise noted)
Garcon: 4/23/0 in 14 games
Wayne: 27/345/0 in 13
Driver: 3/31/1 in 6 (1st season), 21/322/1 in 16 (2nd), 13/167/1 in 13 (3rd)
Jackson: 3/59/0 in 8 (1st), 27/453/6 in 16 (2nd), 41/623/3 in 16 (3rd)
White: 29/446/3 in 16 (1st), 30/506/0 in 16 (2nd)
Tate: 0/0/0 in 2 (1st), 24/432/3 in 16 (2nd)

You would have given up on Roddy White, Vincent Jackson, Reggie Wayne, and Donald Driver after their first years too. That's why you're not in charge. Let's not give up on Tate yet.

If Ocho or Moss are brought into the fray I could only ever see it happening on team friendly and high performance motivated contracts.

what kind of opportunity has price had?

what kind of opportunity has price had?
Week 17, and he looked pretty good hitting those slant routes 3 for 41 with Hoyer at QB.

what kind of opportunity has price had?

I am sure he has had plenty of opportunity in practice and has not shown enough to break the starting rotation....I am hoping against hope that he will emerge this season. Maybe he showed enough promise so that BB could concentrate on other needs....

The Pats knew when he was drafted, that he didn't know the first thing about being a WR in a Pro Offense. He was basically Red Shirted his first year. Even this year, you can't expect him to be plugged in and light the world on fire. After his 3rd year, we should be able to tell what we have with Price.

Same could be said for Tate.

What do Andre Johnson, OchoCinco, Terrell Owens, Arian Foster, Matt Schaub, Adrian Peterson, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, Calvin Johnson, Brandon Pettigrew, Percy Harvin, Santans Moss, Chris Cooley, Ryan Torain, Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, Steve Smith, Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Breaston, Tim Hightower, Knowshon Moreno, Brandon Lloyd, Fred Jackson and Steve Johnson have in common?

They all probably had SportsSenter highlight reel 'top ten plays of the week'.

They also all played for teams with a double-digit number of losses last season.

When did SportsCenter highlight plays become more important than wins?

If it's third down and 10 do I want Tate or Ochocinco to target when Branch gets stonewalled by one DB and Welker is double teamed,.... it isn't Tate. He had a chance all of last year and he got worse not better. IMO he can return kicks that won't be returnable this year.

We whip a lot of dead horses on this site...see Maroney

3rd and 10 is a dump off to Woodhead... everyone knows this!

Tate may get a chance to show progress but if not he's gone. I'd expect someone will be targeted via trade or free agency though very few true deep threats are coming to mind. Moss and Ocho have lost a step from what I can see.

While I don't think Belihcick wants to go into a season with Hernandez as his deep threat, for lack of another credible receiver, I'd say you're right that he's the defacto deep threat - though Hernandez is more of a mid range guy who is tough to bring down, requiring some extra attention.

The question of whether the Patriots can get by without a true deep threat has been answered - the answer is "yes" in the regular season, but limiting yourself in the post season when strong teams can exploit deficiencies, that's bound to catch up with you

I agree with what you saying but schematically I think a reasonable deep threat will help the rest of the team. I'm not sure there's a consistent deep threat out there for us to bring in without it being costly.

Ocho or Moss demand some level of respect (and I'm not a proponent for bringing either of them in) opposed to Tate. I respect the side of the argument that suggests we should bring them in because I can see why.

I'm hopeful our run game improves dramatically. That's the best help for any passing game. Unpredictability.

how could moss possibly return?

I don't see it --- and ocho better be willing to play on the cheap.
