We may never know if Miami had been known by other teams that they wanted Mallett bad and were willing to move up and maybe the Pats saw this and swept away a possible opposing starting QB in the division on purpose...not to mention need in a few years for us as well.

I remember hearing the stories of NE drafting Maroney at #1 in 2006 because they heard their rivals,the Colts wanted him badly and hoping he would fall,so they forced Indy to draft Addai instead.

I could see Bill being sly in watching his rivals draft desires and who they want and pulling the carpet out from underneath them.

The Dolphins didn't select him in the first round. They didn't have a #2 pick, but traded their 3rd and 5th to draft Thomas at 62.

Like the Titans and Vikings proved, if you really want a paticular QB you'll find a way to get em.

Unless Miami was fooled into thinking no other team would take Mallett until late in the draft because of those drug issues and wanted him low and therefore possibly on the cheap.

If you are not aggressive enough in the draft to get your 'boy',often it is too late.

Right, all the teams passed on Mallet once some as much as three times so no team can say they coveted the guy except the team that selected him.

Honestly, I don't care. Mallett is wearing the Patriots laundry now. If the Dolphins wanted him they didn't want do what it took to get him into the fold. And they had plenty of picks, if they had manipulated the draft right to get him. For example if they move down a few slots and take Pouncey at #18 instead of #15, they'd have had an extra 3rd round pick to use on Mallett. Old news.

I think BB takes Mallett because he thinks the guy can help our team not to 'keep him away' from a division rival team. That kind of rationale is way too dangerous to apply, because you can't preemptively take every player that could possibly help a rival team. There's just not enough picks to waste for that kind of thing. Finally the Patriots have team specific fits and needs that most often don't match a lot of other teams. Picking misfits just to 'keep them away' from another team would then hurt the teambuilding process in the long run.

Blocking out Miami makes sense and should be considered since we are talking QB.

Mallet was the #1 QB on the board so you keep what you think is a potential franchise QB away from the enemy and gives the chance to recoup higher value than trading the pick on Friday.

Schaub required two seconds. Kolb supposely a 1st.

Not if they're also a player you can use as well. I think the act of denying a critical player to rival team would have to factor into "value".

I don't think we drafted Mallett to block him from going to the Dolphins. I think we would have preferred to trade out of that spot if possible, but once we couldn't, we took the guy we thought was worth that pick.

The Dolphins had their chance. As their ex Bill Parcells said in a draft special a few weeks ago, "If you wait to see the robins, the spring is over."

I've felt from the beginning that part of what helped prompt Belichick to pull the tirgger is the knowledge that 2 of his division rivals could stand an upgrade at QB - and that Mallett is a talented QB, albeit one with character issues.

The degree to which he prevented division rivals from improving should certainly be an issue to factor in when we see what we've got in Mallett

Miami traded up to 62 and instead of taking Mallet, they drafted a RB who doesn't play up to his size and has serious fumbling problems - in a very RB-rich draft.

Yup, I can see how they really wanted Mallett.

I don't see Belichick using a draft pick primarily to keep a particular player from another team. I think he drafts the guy he thinks is most likely to help the team win. I could see him cracking a smile if a particular pick had the side-effect of frustrating a Divisional or Conference opponent, though.

Agreed. BB isn't goign to waste a roster spot to keep a player from another team. It's always about improving his team as they play 16+ games a season rather than the 1-3 games they would potentially play against another opponent.
