Patriots Worst Draft in NFL?

I was listening to Ross Tucker on SIRIUS NFL Radio today. He said the Patriots draft was not just bad it was "awful". He went through each draft pick and said their draft may not only have been one of the worst, but was probably THE worst draft. I'm not posting this here so that folks will bash the guy, because he's actually really good overall. Here is some of what he said:

1. He likes Costanzo better than Solder, and said in watching film of Solder, he was overpowered a bunch.

2. I think all he said about the UVA CB Dowling was that he was hurt alot last year.

3. He didn't so much mind them taking an RB, but he thought taking two of them was stupid, particularly when they could have taken a DE or OLB, and that with this being one of the best DE drafts ever, it's amazing they didn't get one.

4. On Mallet he said a third round pick will sign a 4 year contract. Brady just signed a 4 year contract, and he questioned what they could get for the guy being that he might not even play to show people what he has. He said they might get a 2nd for him, and that is nothing. He hated the pick.

5. He liked that they gave Cannon a chance despite his illness, but said he totally was NOT the type of OLman the Patriots draft. He said OLman that size are not what the Patriots do.

A caller called in to say that Belichick was good at manipulating the draft, but that he was a horrible talent evaluator, and Tucker seemed to agree with the guy.

Again, he wrapped it up saying it was likely the worse draft of all the teams. He did say, time could prove him wrong, and that BB knows alot more about football than he does.

The comments fired up alot of Patriots fans to call in and rip the Patriots draft.

In fairness to the guy, he came across level headed, and knowledgeable.

Yes, the Patriots had the worst draft of the year. In fact, it might have been historically bad.

I implore all GMs to stop doing anything else like the Patriots. You don't want to copy this crap, seriously. Just go ahead and do it the same way you've always been doing it. And be sure to take BB's phone calls come draft time so you can rip him off by giving us your extra picks.

This is the guy that claimed the Patriots allowed players on IR to practice and that the Pats were screwing up the situation with Brady's contract (I think it's hilarious that no one's talking about Peyton and his franchise tag right now), so I'm not shocked that he didn't like BB's draft.

Those that think it was good are doing so(Sporting News)just because it's the Pats. I mean, just simple reason would suggest a lot of them did not make sense - horrible on the need side, lot's of picks that could have been had with much later picks. It's interesting to hear Tucker say as much, given he seems like a rational thinker. Will eat crow if this one turns out otherwise. The draft is a crapshoot, but I don't feel like the odds were set well with this one. And if you take a taste on the last 5 years, the Pats are not a great drafting team.

Regardless of whether or not the Pats' draft was good or bad, consider the source. The next time Ross Tucker has something positive to say about the Patriots will be the first time that has ever happened.

So it's your gut against BB's knowledge, years of experience and record of success.

Usually it’s the last piece of the team puzzle, after initial free agency and trades… usually picks can be traded for veteran players…

No OTAs,no minicamps, no playbooks for the rookies and no UDFA as of yet. With the inherent complexity of the pro game, how can anybody expect any of these rookies to contribute except those at precious few positions (K,,P,KR,PR and maybe RB- as long as he doesn't have to pick up a blitz))? It helps the veteran on the bubble but this will essentially be a redshirt year for most of them...

When did Tucker say those players could be had with much later picks?

The Giants were going to take Solder at #19. The Bills took a #34. Vereen was considered one of the top RBs available. Mallet and Cannon fell. It's silly to think they were taken too early. Ridley was maybe taken too early, but trading back into the 4th round is only going to net you a 6th rounder tops. BIG EFFIN DEAL.

I did a little roundup today trying to find draft grades from "real sportswriters." (Note to Google News: please, please drop bleacherreport from your results!)

The grades I found for the Patriots were A+, A, A, B+, B+. And now we have an F. There's something pleasing to me about getting an A+ and an F on the same draft.

I would think a national publication with a much better reputation should have a lot more pull that THIS guy's opinion, therefore I am in agreement with The Sporting News.

Not 'just because' it's the Patriots as some think, but because of the following:

--Added another 1st round pick, giving us 2 yet again

--Added another 2nd round pick, giving us 2 yet again

--Took care of many 'needs' current, and future--all while continuing to go the BPA route

--Great value all over

--Some major names in there, many of which could have been in the first round as of just last week:

1. Solder
2. Mallett
3. Cannon
4. Even Ras-I-Dowling, and Shane Vareen (BOTH) could have gone in round 2

(that's 5 pretty major names that we solidified)

--good value in our trading, added much needed picks to 2012, where we started with only 5--major accomplishment in my opinion

--By continuing to gain 1st and 2nd round picks, we are pretty much playing with house money. Even if a couple or few do not work out, essentially, all we did was move the picks into next yr. Anyone who works out is just an added bonus.

--Solidified the future of the O-Line with Solder and Cannon (Love it)

--Somehow managed to steal likely the most NFL ready QB in the entire draft, allowing us to give Hoyer much needed competition, and possibly setting up either a great QB talent-wise with a rocket arm, or even a down the road trade for Hoyer or Mallett (all while in the 3rd rd)

--added to the youth, depth, speed of the secondary by grabbing a 6'2" CB who runs a flat out 4.4, who is also potentially quite versatile and could possibly even play safety and replace Meriweather next yr

--again...added youth, depth, and speed to the RB position, grabbed draft board binky Shane Vareen to compliment BJGE and Woodhead. Any additional players a la Faulk, Ridley are just a bonus

--speaking of Ridley--added some all important special teams players in the sense of Dowling and Ridley, an aspect of the game that must not be overlooked

--some of these players can be blended in year 1, while some will simply add the youth movement of the future, regardless the majority (5 of 9 ??) should end up making the 53 man roster
