Mallett would benefit, even more than most players, from getting drafted by the right team. What if he gets drafted by the Patriots? They have the No. 17, 28 and 33 picks --all in the part of the draft where Mallett could go. They have coaxed production out of players with bad reps before -- they did it with Moss and Corey Dillon. Mallett would be able to learn from Tom Brady and Bill Belichick without the pressure of playing right away. (Besides, let's face it: If the Patriots draft him, most of us will say "Wow, what a steal," the way we did when they traded a fourth-rounder for a supposedly washed-up Moss. Some organizations just get the benefit of the doubt.)

Ryan Mallett one of most talented quarterbacks in 2011 NFL Draft - Michael Rosenberg - SI.com

And the Patriots drafted him a lot lower than was being suggested. :)

people are angry because they didn't turn the picks into jj watt or robert quinn or aldon smith.

lots of whining without lots of viable alternatives.

if they spent a 3rd rounder on oconnell, this was a no-brainer

Really excellent article! Thank you Fencer for finding it and linking it here on PatsFans!

I gave no thought at all to QB this draft but OMG the Patriots just might have stolen the next Brady/Manning at #74. It's all up to young ryan now and time will tell..... Again, excellent article! Must read for all Pats fans!

I'm amped for this pick, the more i see the more i like. It's gonna be a while before i'm gonna want to see him on the field though.

Full Count » Why one Red Sox prospect was elated when Pats drafted Ryan Mallett
His best friend growing up is a hot prospect in the Red Sox system.

Mallet is 1st round talent but slid to the third given character issues.

While there's a lot of premature talk of Mallet being Brady's successor, Mallet knows his quickest route to being an NFL starter - with an NFL starter's salary - is to show the best possible attitude and clean lifestyle.

That's the only question mark with him... it's not his ability to play.

Effectively all he needs to do to turn Belichick's 3rd round investment into a 1st round pick is to behave.

That's a pretty worthwhile investment for the Patriots.
