Say what you want about the guy he has been pretty good for a 2nd round pick a long time ago. Without free agency I would expect us to take a T in the first round if Light isnt a bag job, agreed in principal before the lockout. If he didnt Light has to be sweating, he could lose his job because he did so well(another pro bowl) and may command more money than they need to pay a rookie RT(Vollmer to LT). Our team is very young and we need some vets to be lifetime Patriots and set examples for the younger guys to follow. Do you want one of those guys to be Light?? Is he going to be a pats hall of famer or do you look to upgrade that position too? If we dont take a 1st round T I think that gives him alot of leverage in the negotiations right?? Anyone else feeling a bag job?

Why would he be sweating? He is an good to very good LT who will bank once he hits free agency.

Personally I like Light, he has been a terrific Patriot. I hope he stays so that the Patriots can concentrate their draft on defense, as it is now they have to "waste" a high pick on the O Line because of the uncertainity around Light and Mankins. Had this been a regular year the Patriots would have most of their roster in place and could cherry pick players. Now they are pretty much forced to slant things a little more towards need than BPA.

Freakin CBA, don't even get me started....

Or the Pats could grab a tackle in the 3rd and plan on him starting at right tackle and not worry about Light at all.

Sorry, I'm not following. There WILL be free agency, perhaps starting as early as Monday. The question is whether the patriots and Light can reach a mutually acceptable deal, and what, if any, insurance the patriots might want to draft in case that a deal can't be reached.

I'd love to see Matt Light back. The potential of not having Neal, Mankins and Light going into next season is troubling to me. It all boils down to how much $$ he looking for and how many years he expects to play. If there is no agreement in principal on a deal, the Pats may be forced to take a starting caliber OT in the draft.

Re: Also...

Rookies: If you want to be an instant fan favorite react like this when the Pats draft you. :rocker:

I think that Matt has a couple of good years still in him and I also think that the Patriots will resign him.

Yes, he might make good money, he might not. He likely will have to move, learn a new system, uproot the family, and be on a less successful team. The decision will be made for him if he hasnt made the deal in principal, in fact if we dont take a T I think its a definate sign that he has agreed in principal.

That is the lament of every Patriots fan when a player leaves, usually they have millions more dollars to help soften the blow.

I hope he stays.

Light could retire tomorrow and never have to work another day in his life. I will be surprised to see the Pats take an OT in the first 2 rounds. If we do, then it really might be the end for Light....but again I doubt it. Light is like Bruschi. He's a lifer. He has roots in the community and both domestic and economic. He'll take will take just a fair offer to get him to end his career with the Pats. For him its not about getting the top dollar.

BTW - what team is going to pay a 33 old OT big money to start with them. There are a LOT of decent OTs in FA. That alone will dilute the market

If they take an OLman early they will do it with the understanding that they want him to start. It could mean a guy like Watkins, but I think any OLman who comes on board now will be slated for "guard duty"

OR maybe the Pats will do something I have been calling for, for at least 4 years. Draft one of the top OTs. Put him at RT, move Volmer to LT and move Light to OG. I've always thought that he was a good LT, but would be a super LG.

We cant put a first round pick on the bench, maybe Mr Light would like to rethink being a player rep for the Pats....it doesnt have much shelf life does it?? This was my bet so now we can take the money we were to pay Light and go into Free Agency and be a big player for an impact pass rusher. Now we have to hope they undo the franchise tag so we can go after Woodley!

Especially not a first rounder as high as 17. When I read an interview this week where he said that it was his last contract and that he would go to the highest bidder, I figured it was over for him. Good luck to Light, he will be missed.

If we can sign Mankins with the extra money we save with cutting Light, then i would say yes plus a vet just in case from FA.

I can see us getting Boling at 56 or 60 and still picking up another G in Free Agency.
