2011 Patriots draft
I started this doing a full mock of 3 rounds. However, there has been a lot of changes in the past few days. NFL Draft scout revised their grades, Gosselin came out with his Top 100, drug test results from the combine leaked, and there was unfortunate news about Marcus Cannon. I really don’t have the time/ energy to rewrite the entire mock. Here is how I see the draft breaking down for the Patriots…
17. Trade to Philadelphia for picks 22, 85, 227.
Part of the problem when you do a mock draft is that you think other teams think as highly of the your highly ranked players as you do. Here I came into a scenario where JJ Watt was chosen by Houston @ 11, and San Diego traded with Miami to jump the queue on DE’s and selected Cameron Jordan (Miami taking Pouncey @ 19). Philadelphia has been known to trade up in the past, and they get to select the OT of their choice here. For value The Patriots trade down.
22. (from Philadelphia) Muhammed Wilkerson DT/DE Temple
Just the best value at this spot in my opinion. Can slide between a DT in a 4 man line, to DE in the 3-4.
28. Trade to Tennessee for pick # 39 and a 2012 #1 pick.
The trade that Peter King speculated about. I’d take it even though there are players I like here.
33. Trade to San Francisco for picks 45 and 76.
San Francisco gets to vault over many teams to select their QB of future.
39. (from Tennessee) Ras I Dowling DB Virginia
Played CB at Virginia, I look at his size/ measurables/ instincts and see the FS of our future. Would instantly contribute as our nickel back.
45. (from San Francisco) Jabaal Sheard DE/ OLB Pittsburgh
Great mesh of talent, and college performance. Would probably start as designated pass rusher in sub packages as he learned the trade of a Patriot OLB.
60. Shane Vereen RB California.
Versatile and talented enough to step in and contribute from Day 1. I’m a believer.
74. James Carpenter OG/OT Alabama
Has been jumping up the ranks in the past week, so I don’t know if we could get him here now. Unfortunate, as I believe that he is talented enough to play ROT, as well as OG. If he is not here pencil in DS’s favorite choice for OT.
76. (From San Francisco) Andrew Jackson OG Fresno St.
Depending how the draft unfolds we could also be looking at boling/ Moffit here. I like the talent of Jackson, and I don’t think that he would last too much longer.
85. (from Philadelphia) Trade for 2012 2nd rounder, and 2011 6th rounder.
How do you say too many picks? I think that there will be a lot of value at this time for other teams, and we’ll look towards next year.
92. Martin Parker NT Richmond
A solid, talented NT is tough to get. I would rather pick Parker a little early here then look to the alternatives (though I do like Chris Neild as a round 5 choice).
125. Brandon Fusco OG/OC Slippery Rock
Center of our future. Small school background is the only reason that he is here at the end of the 4th. Talented enough to play Guard IMO.
