2011 Patriots draft

I started this doing a full mock of 3 rounds. However, there has been a lot of changes in the past few days. NFL Draft scout revised their grades, Gosselin came out with his Top 100, drug test results from the combine leaked, and there was unfortunate news about Marcus Cannon. I really don’t have the time/ energy to rewrite the entire mock. Here is how I see the draft breaking down for the Patriots…

17. Trade to Philadelphia for picks 22, 85, 227.
Part of the problem when you do a mock draft is that you think other teams think as highly of the your highly ranked players as you do. Here I came into a scenario where JJ Watt was chosen by Houston @ 11, and San Diego traded with Miami to jump the queue on DE’s and selected Cameron Jordan (Miami taking Pouncey @ 19). Philadelphia has been known to trade up in the past, and they get to select the OT of their choice here. For value The Patriots trade down.

22. (from Philadelphia) Muhammed Wilkerson DT/DE Temple
Just the best value at this spot in my opinion. Can slide between a DT in a 4 man line, to DE in the 3-4.

28. Trade to Tennessee for pick # 39 and a 2012 #1 pick.
The trade that Peter King speculated about. I’d take it even though there are players I like here.

33. Trade to San Francisco for picks 45 and 76.
San Francisco gets to vault over many teams to select their QB of future.

39. (from Tennessee) Ras I Dowling DB Virginia
Played CB at Virginia, I look at his size/ measurables/ instincts and see the FS of our future. Would instantly contribute as our nickel back.

45. (from San Francisco) Jabaal Sheard DE/ OLB Pittsburgh
Great mesh of talent, and college performance. Would probably start as designated pass rusher in sub packages as he learned the trade of a Patriot OLB.

60. Shane Vereen RB California.
Versatile and talented enough to step in and contribute from Day 1. I’m a believer.

74. James Carpenter OG/OT Alabama
Has been jumping up the ranks in the past week, so I don’t know if we could get him here now. Unfortunate, as I believe that he is talented enough to play ROT, as well as OG. If he is not here pencil in DS’s favorite choice for OT.

76. (From San Francisco) Andrew Jackson OG Fresno St.
Depending how the draft unfolds we could also be looking at boling/ Moffit here. I like the talent of Jackson, and I don’t think that he would last too much longer.

85. (from Philadelphia) Trade for 2012 2nd rounder, and 2011 6th rounder.
How do you say too many picks? I think that there will be a lot of value at this time for other teams, and we’ll look towards next year.

92. Martin Parker NT Richmond
A solid, talented NT is tough to get. I would rather pick Parker a little early here then look to the alternatives (though I do like Chris Neild as a round 5 choice).

125. Brandon Fusco OG/OC Slippery Rock
Center of our future. Small school background is the only reason that he is here at the end of the 4th. Talented enough to play Guard IMO.

159. Bruce Miller DE/ OLB Central Florida
Yes we’re in binky time here... 4 year Starter. Two time Conference USA Def. Player of the Year. 34 career sacks. Has played DE the past 3 years, but started as an LB in High School, and for a while as a Frosh.

6th round (from trade of 85). Anthony Allen RB Georgia Tech
Nice size. Caught 37 balls as Soph. @ Louisville. Nice blend of skills. I see him in the Marc Edwards/ Heath Evans/ Patrick Pass mode where his first responsibility is protecting Brady, but he can also catch passes on the flat, and run well enough to keep the D honest.

193. DeJon Gomes SS Nebraska
2 year starter @ Nebraska after being at the CC of SF for two years. Film rat, good hands, takes good angles in pursuit. Hey, it’s the 6th round. Should be good camp fodder/ S Teamer.

227. (from Philadelphia) Colin Franklin TE Iowa St.
6’6” 256. 2nd in the nation for passes caught by TE in 2010. Was used more as a blocker the previous 2 years, but recorder 32 catches. Would also not be unhappy if we drafted someone like Andre Smith here, who is more of a mauler.

Summary

I believe you are a bit off as to where some of these kids might be had (I see Carpenter going mid-second at the latest), but this is the best overall draft of NE players I've seen to date.

Thanks Box. The last minute value changes threw me off, but I didn't want to go back and rewrite the whole damn thing for Carpenter. I'm probably a half a round, to a round early on Jackson/ Martin/ Fusco if that makes up any of the difference.

Anyway, insert the OT of your choice, as I think it is when the second tier should start to fall...

I have to concur with Box. Great job. You seemed to have fit all the pieces together. I liked that you recognized that Miami is a trade down partner for someone, especially for SD, who will jump up and piss off a lot of Pats fans by taking a player they want. And I'm sure Miami did it on PURPOSE.

When You got to 17 you had no choice to move down. The only pick that went after 17 that I would have POSSIBLY liked was Heywood, and he's pretty much interchangeable with Wilkerson.

I really like the Sheard pick. Someone on a podcast I was listening to made an excellent point about Sheard. The found it telling that when both Sheard and Romeus were together Romeus got both the most press, AND the benefit of having Sheard on the other side. This season after he got hurt. Sheard had to deal with offenses sliding blocking towards him, and he still was productive WITHOUT Romeus. Just something to think about.

I agree with Box that Carpenter might be too low, but swapping spots with Vareen would probably clear that up.

Now if you just had the insight to forgo and OG (Andy Jackson) and replaced him with Sheard's old teammate, Greg Romeus, I would taken your draft in a heart beat.....even though Miami tried to screw us.

Well, I got 2 of 3 in the second round... Given my normal success with picking for BB, I should buy a lottery ticket.

You hit on Vereen and Dowling. That's more than most people managed. :)
