Posturing or truth: 50/50

:bricks:

Noway, vince hasn't even made that much money yet(compartively speaking of course). Only one year off his rookie contract.

NO WAY. This is just vince blowing off some steam.

How many times have we gone home and said man i'm going to quit.

Oh please. That's crazy - He just got the contract that will give him a comfortable life for the remainder.

This is going to get old quick.

I was just with Vince at the Matt Light Foundation Lock-Out Breakfast. He seemed ready to go and there was no talk of retirement

oh hell no!

...can you imagine this defense without wilfork in the middle?

Did he run this by Bianca before saying it?

doubtful! Also, wasn't length of contract/longterm security a big part of his current contract?

Actually he's made most of the money he ever will already because he got an $18M signing bonus plus $750K salary up front on his 2010 deal and he earned roughly $13M from his rookie deal. He's only comparatively speaking of course) got another $20 tops (only about $5M of which is guaranteed) coming to him from the remaining 4 years on his second deal that ends at age 33 or 34 if there is a lost season...

Personally I think his statement is just blather to fuel the lockout breakfast discussion, but then again he and Bianca have been very thrifty and careful with his money because they always intended it to last and provide for his family while also being mindful of his potential health concerns going forward because of his loss of both parents to complications of diabetes while still in their 40's. They have long understood that he can't maintain NT weight indefinitely and not risk the same thing happening to his kids.

Unless your Brett Favre, retirement talk from a football player usually means the end is near. This is not a good development for Pats fans. Hopefully the 50/50 retirement talk turns into playing for another 2 years at least.

Let's move beyond the headline and see what Wilfork had to say.

It Is What It Is » Vince Wilfork: Retirement ‘definitely a possibility’ if full season is missed

“Oh yeah, I thought about that,” said Wilfork when asked if he’d would retire if a season is wiped out. “A full season, that’s a season gone. I mean, eight years, it’s not like I’m in my first or second year. It goes through my mind all the time, of course. I’m down at a place that I love, that’s home for me, Florida. Being able to sit back and enjoy my ranch, enjoy kids, enjoy great weather all the time, who wouldn’t think about that?”

“It [potential retirement] is a 50/50. It’s a possibility, it’s definitely a possibility,” Wilfork said.

A couple of things: first, Wilfork is talking about retirement if an entire season is lost. Second, he's currently reflecting on the time he has enjoyed this past off-season with his family. Third, he's only saying he would consider it.

Then again, if Tom Brady said this can you imagine the reaction from the national media?

Brady doesn't care about football! Jake Locker to pats! Why did they trade cassel! Patriots still cheating!

Doesn't he lose that guaranteed money if he retires though? I though he just gets that over time as long as he's in the NFL. If I understand what you're saying correctly.

True, Wilfork would need to return a pro-rated return of the signing bonus; in this case $14.4 million of that $18 million, unless Robert Kraft is in an extremely generous mood regarding Vince and that money.

Vince also has at least one investment that I can think of--AquaHydrate--which is probably going to make him quite a bit of money. It's grown by leaps and bounds since he bought in.

Odds of Kraft demanding that signing bonus back: 100%
