From His MMQB:

There's a team in the draft that has a deal on the table -- I'm guessing New England (surprise!) -- with a team trying to come back into the first round. The deal will net the team dealing the first-rounder the following: a second-round pick in 2011 and a first-round pick in 2012. The deal, I hear, is contingent on the player the trade-up team wants still being there. Could it be Tennessee trading into the bottom of the first round, at 28, to get Jake Locker or Andy Dalton? Stay tuned.

New England, points out ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss, has only five draft picks in 2012. (The Patriots own their first- through fifth-rounders; the six went to Philly last year as part of a deal for linebacker Tracy White, the seven to the Chiefs for safety Jarrad Page.) That makes deals for future picks eminently logical this year, bordering on certain. The Patriots could use, say, Mike Pouncey or Cameron Jordan with their 17th pick in the first round, or leverage that pick by moving down a few spots, then deal the 28th altogether.

I'll take the 7th pick in the second round and what might be a high 2012 first round pick for the 28th pick.

something like this i could live with. If they are getting another 2nd rounder. Take your 17th, 33rd, wherever Ten would pick in the 2nd round, and your own 2nd rounder and next years #1st rounder you are in good shape.

Pats can trade down AS LONG as they address their needs in this draft. All too often this team has traded down while not addressing major needs especially on defense.

That would be great. I imagine it's one of the top 13 picks in the second round, so to drop a max of say 17 spots, you get a 2012 1st. And 33 is basically a 1st anyways so we'd still probably be able to draft someone we were considering at 28.

And if we're really lucky, that team will start their crappy rookie QB from day 1, improving our draft slot in 2012. Okay, not likely, but I could dream. :D

this is what we were wishing for with the Raiders all last year! Let's say the Raiders were the Raiders of the previous 5 years and tanked it in 2010, would the Pats draft or trade that pick do you think?

FYI guys its specualtion of "A" team. It doesnt really mean our team.

The redskins were actively shopping for extra picks this year and next. It could be a few teams.

there are 2 things that bother me:

(A) so the Pats only have 5 picks next year ('12). Coincidentally, they happen to have rounds 1 thru 5 covered. So its not like that traded away 1,2,3 and have 4,5,6,7,7, right? We all know that BB's board is so different than everyone elses that whoever he wants in 7, for example, would probably be available an hour later when they call the kid to invite him to camp as a UDFA. I see this argument for trading for the future as a non-starter.

(B) if this team drafts well this year and everyone else continues to matriculate, there won't be enough roster spots for 7 or 8 draft picks next year. And if there are weaknesses that evolve this season and need to be addressed next year, I think they go with vets who can bring some maturity to the fledgling '10 class. Remember the formula of winning the 3 SBs.

As long as we use one of the first round picks I'm happy. I mean, the trade Kings bring up I'm all for. I said a month ago that Dalton was my fav of all the late round QBs, key phrase "late round", now he's been hyped to a 1st rounder, it's crazy.

Sometimes I think for us it gets frustrating watching them trade but for the most part if has done them well. Has it been perfect? No we have missed out on some very good players, but clearly it's something their dedicated too and they stick to their plan, and more often than not it works.

If a team decides they need an OG badly like Mankins and deal two high picks this year in a trade for him then I could certainly see numerous draft picks heading into 2012 because we would certainly deal those deal picks away for twice as many in 2012....right now I only see the Pats dealing the late draft picks in rounds 4 and 6 for a mid rounder next season.

Unless the CBA gets agreed upon in the next 72 hours that (trading Mankins) is not going to happen; with the lockout in place teams can trade picks for picks, but they can't trade players.

Be realistic here. If the Patriots are involved in the talks, and the team that wants to move back into the first round is willing to give up a 2012 first, the pick in question is much more likely the #17 rather than the #28. Let's look at the comps:

2003 Pats send # 19 for Baltimore #41 and 2004 1st rounder (Boller)
2007 Cowboys send #22 for #36 and 2008 1st rounder (B. Quinn)
2004 Cowboys send #22 to Bills for #43, 5th rounder and 2005 1st (Losman)

Versus the short range moves:
2010 Vikings send #30 to Detroit for #34 and a 25 slot flip of 4th rounders (J. Best)
2009 Pats send #47, #124 and #199 to Oakland for #40 (Brace)

Yes, it pretty much has to be pick #17 if we're talking about getting a 1 and a 2 back. Unless we trade down from 17 into the early 20s and then flip the pick, which is possible.

Except it is highly unlikely the Pats would have a trade done for 17 at this point. Because of the way the draft could shake out, there might be a blue chip player still available at 17. The Pats may be in a powerbroker position and get even more. Also, a guy they may love, but aren't willing to trade up might fall to 17 or close.

Now the only way the Pats would have a deal agreed to that was basically done as long as the target player is available is if the trading team was giving them a sweetheart deal. That means they have been given an offer too good to pass up (assuming they are the team in question).

The more likely scenario is that it may be a team in the second round with a lower pick than Tennessee as the trade partner. There was a rumor that the Chargers were talking with the Pats about the 28th pick. They are the 18th and the 29th picks in the second round. A second and a 2012 first is a more realistic trade at one of those spots. The Seahawks have the 25th pick in the second round and they need a QB of the future.

Cant trade players until there is a new CBA, I'm guessing you meant trade him for picks later?

I told me Dad just yesterday that I foresee the Steelers trading up to New England's first spot so they can get Pouncey to match up with his brother, and they need serious OL help.

I realized that it won't happen unless a CBA is in place so it can't be this draft...maybe 2012 into 2013

The team is the Raiders. And the picks are 48 and 2012 1st for 28.

Without a CBA in place at this late hour, trading down and away from unnecessarily expensive high-price high-risk rookies is prudent. If the rookie scale were locked in so Trader Bill and Owner Bob could know what the new meat might cost, it would be best to draft their brains out. 1st rounders are just a terrible crap shoot and these guys are so-so at this draft business like everybody else. Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive and Dodge, my friends!

At 17 and 28, trading down for cap reasons isn't really a consideration. The only time even with CBA uncertainty (it is almost certain there will be a rookie cap in the new CBA) that trading down for cap reasons matter is picks in the top 10.
