Can anyone explain to me the clock management by Pete Carroll at the end of the USC - UCLA game? USC turns the ball over with 1:10 to go trailing 13-9, but they have three time outs and figure to get the ball back with 45 seconds to go.

But, inexplicably, they call time out after the turnover WHILE the clock is stopped. Result was UCLA was punting with 15 seconds to go instead of 45. Game over.

I couldn't believe it. Of course, none of the announcers said anything about it, but such a bonehead play turned a difficult but possible task into a miracle.

Did anyone else think the same thing?

Who won the game? What was the final score?

UCLA 13, USC 9

Carroll Blew It. I was rooting for him. I like Pete Carroll, but not as an NFL head coach.

Wow. Thanks. I watched the first half and it seemed evenly matched. I can't believe UCLA shut out the Condoms in the 2nd half.

Due to the rule changes that took place at the beginning of the year, the clock would have started when the ball was spotted so UCLA would have been able to run the clock anyway. It didn't really make a difference when he called a timeout.

About time USC loses. The idea of seeing them appearing in the NC game makes me sick to my core. Florida-OSU. Book it.

Florida has to get through Arkansas. Don't think Arkansas won't make a game of it in the second half. Even then, I still think Michigan deserves to be in the NC game. Oh what do you know, Arkansas pulls within 3.

From the AFLAC trivia question during the game:

Who is the only player in the NFL to win 3 straight Super Bowls?

(if you saw the game please hold off on shouting out the answer)

There's no way Michigan deserves to go because they had already play OSU couple of weeks ago. They had their chance and they blew it. Personally I believe only conference champions should be able to play for the title.

Unless, of course, they have a playoffs:)

Here is look at the rule change under speed drill.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/bonus/2006-08-24-bonus-cover_x.htm

Will the new coaches' challenge slow down the game? As part of instant replay, coaches will be able to challenge an official's call once a game, provided they have a timeout remaining. If the call is reversed, the team challenging will keep the timeout. If the coach loses the challenge, his team loses the timeout. Replay officials can also stop the game after any play to review a call.
Will the new clock rules speed up the game? The first new clock rule states the clock will start when the ball is kicked, not when the receiving team touches it. The other rule states the game clock begins on a change of possession when the ball is ready for play.
The new changes are expected to shorten games about 10 to 24 plays a game, which could affect statistics, records and end-of-game situations. Which is why the changes have rankled plenty of coaches before the first second of the season's clock has ticked.
"I don't particularly like it because I think it's all geared to speed up the game for television. Television, I think, is dominating everything we do," Penn State coach Joe Paterno said.
Paterno's suggestion? Cut some commercials. Even airtime is up in the air

Thanks for the rule clarification....I take back my dissing of Pete Carroll.....at least on this.

you gotta love colledge ball.... you NEVER get a second chance at a championship........., unless you are Michigan. GO BLUE!!!!

Florida-OSU.

An impressive win by Florida. Any SEC champ deserves to go to the NC game.

agree. even, though I am convinced Michigan is the 2nd best team in the nation, they already had their shop at OSU. Florida (having gone thru that tough schedule) -OSU for the championship and Michigan - USC in the Rose Bowl. if Michigan goes to the title game, who is playing in the Rose Bowl - USC - ND: been there done that.

Ken Norton, now a coach at USC. Dallas '93 and '94. San Francisco '95.

I knew the suspense was killing you.

Can you believe what Pete Carrol accomplished at USC? A team that was going nowhere fast into a team that went to back to back title games and a share of the title to one loss from another. When he coached the Pats he was going in the oppisite direction. Pete Carrol is a collage coach, and a dam good one. If he ever comes back to the NFL, (which he shouldn't) lets hope he goes to the Jets. :D

He was with the Jets in 1994 , and he sucked as much as he did with the Pats.. No he could not have gotten any worse...

Ok, didn't know that, I do know he sucks as a pro coach, thats why I said I wished he'd go to the Jets.
