Sure you want to trade for 2012 draft picks?

Yeah. As I posted in another thread, I don't think that the players really want that "nuclear option" either, but it's really their main leverage point. Goodell is merely fighting the case in the press by highlighting the extreme consequences instead of the middle ground.

To the original question - not really. I mean, in the course of trading down from the #28, #33 we end up with four third-rounders, I could see letting one of those go for a 2012 2nd (plus a 2011 6th/7th), but I wouldn't accept any 2012 pick as a direct part of a deal for the #28 or #33.

There could be a scenario in which 2012 picks have greater value than 2011: if there is no football this year. Consider trading up to draft some highly rated kid who, left to his own devices and without the structure of football, gets bored, loses FB shape, and has a night like that depicted in "The Hangover." If there's no football until 2012 then all these guys who are drafted this year lie fallow and are vulnerable to this or similar event chains. One might reasonably roll the dice and max load 2012 picks to avoid this scenario.

"Goodell Fears NFL Without a Draft."

Of course he does!!

Without any fear of that Scum Bag yoinking our Draft Picks, Coach Bill can have TWENTY camera men on the side lines!! :D

Michael Lombardi wrote an article today ( i think today or yesterday) regaring how the pats massage the draft.

they still get the player they want, or in regards to talent level, and pick up additional picks.

So f they still get the player they want, at the price they want, then by all means trade back and pick up some picks..
Of course, I'm a fan who wants them to move up and get Quinn

He might be able to. But, I don't think there's anyway to determine if he can play standing up. Coupled with no junior film. I'd be shocked if we traded up for him. Our MO is to go for the sure thing. Not gamble on greatness in Round 1. BB doesn't draft, let alone trade up for many boom/bust picks. I've been having us pick an olb early since 07. Still waiting. My hunch is Chris Carter from Fresno at 60 or 74.

I've said it before and I will say it again. No judge is going to declare that the draft is illegal because that would affect ALL 4 major sports leagues. Not happening.

One problem with the whole lawsuit thing is that the owners were working under mutually agreed upon rules. The players agreed to the draft, franchise tag, etc. How can they now rule it to be illegal? Makes no sense.. Both parties would be guilty of allowing it.

From 1989 thourgh 1993, with NO CBA, the draft went on. It will continue on for the foreseeable future. This posturing by Goodell is just bogus.

As for Kessler. He's a rogue and needs to be jettisoned by the Player's Trade Association. All he will bring them is a world of hurt in the long run. Player salaries will take a beating..

You are right on. Its a tempest in a teapot. Even if it did happen, the Pats are more likely to be one of the haves in a diminished NFL that would quickly evolve into a 2 tier league with several fewer teams.

The players should really get a grip on this before they garner a VERY Pyrrhic victory.

BTW- I don't think the NCAA will be happy having to recruit HS kids against the NFL, or try to keep them in school past their sophomore year

The Draft creates the parity which makes the NFL great, although the patriots should most likely be the beneficiaries of complete free agency, it would ruin the league.

so screw that. MLB sucks.

That being said, it would appear that Cousin DB is one of those "trade till next year and it doesn't matter if the guy you pass is a pro bowler" guys (want examples?). As I am sure you read Bill this week saying....and how ironic now....that there will come a time when he finally has to take some players with the annual surplus on picks (cash in). Remember, he has got nailed with this Trade Draft picks into next year m.o. as well.

If he trades up and down in this class fine.

My point is that there might be a Draft but perhaps not as we know it now. It could be re-visited because without a doubt, the fact is the weaker Teams had poor records to earn that spot but the salaries rose at those slots so high even if the Team wanted to Trade it couldn't. There will be changes. Perhaps they go to a group limited Draft where you might have eight Teams at the front of the Draft only allowed to Trade amongst themselves or something like that because a weak Team takes years to straighten out. It's bad for the league.

If BB Trades out for 2012 picks next week I would be the first to categorize that as a STUPID move on the Pats F.O. unless they have advanced information about a new CBA. All you "Geeze Louise, we won't have added picks in 2012, We're doomed!!!!!!" please take heart. If there is a new CBA , FA will happen and we can move guys like Mankins if the league does not screw us out of him or a guy like Merriweather for picks in 2012 after the Draft.....relieved?

Interesting also that he had a big role in current FA system:
McNeil et al. v. NFL, et al. — Won jury verdict for NFL players, striking down free agency restrictions under the antitrust laws. This victory led to the Reggie White class action, in which the current free agency/salary cap system in the NFL was achieved;

This makes sense to me. Over the years collective bargaining does change drafts. The NBA was originally a 12 round draft which has been negotiated down to only 2 rounds through collective bargaining over the years. ( I remember Manute Bol the fifth rounder ! ). In the 1950's the NFL had thirty ( 30) rounds ! Risky business giving up a bird in the hand this year, for one who is probably in the bush next year.

DW - It's pretty f'in stupid of you to go making such wild assumptions when I never said such a thing. Do everyone a favor and stop reading into more than what was said.

While the number of rounds has changed, the number of players taken hasn't changed much at all. It continues to be around 250 to 256 players. And it's been that way for at least the last 20 years.

Mr. Everyone, Please read what I said. I said it would "appear" that you were one of those that is a proponent of trading away all the valued picks from one year to the next. Your statements project that tendency. If I at all have read you wrong and you would be of those who think that hence warned, trading into 2012 does not seem like a smart way to go, I stand corrected Cousin DB.

Considering that I said absolutely nothing, one way or the other, about the trading of the picks, how could you even remotely come to the conclusion that you did? All I said was that no judge was going to rule the draft as Illegal because it would immediately affect the other 3 major sports.

You basically said that 1+1 = 29,293,109..

So, I stand by my reaction to you. Don't read more into what I said.

You couldn't be more wrong about the 2012 NFL Draft. We do know that the next CBA will have a rookie wage scale. If you think otherwise, you have your head in the sand. That wage scale may not impact this draft. Because the draft occurred under the old CBA. That makes this years picks less valuable than 2012 because you may have to pay the same pick more money to sign than you will next year. Of course, they could put this years draft under the new CBA with a wage scale too. Then, it's business as usual. Delaying a pick for a year and moving up is smart. Not stupid as you call it. Jerrod Mayo says hello. And, that 3rd rounder last year. Is now 33. Moved up over 1 1/2 rounds by having a little patience. Smart not stupid.
